Install GTA V mods as a reversible PC-only project: identify whether your copy is Legacy or Enhanced, back up your saves and every file you will change, place archive edits in OpenIV’s separate mods folder, install only the dependencies named by each mod, and test one change at a time in Story Mode. Keep the modded installation out of GTA Online. If an update or mod breaks the game, remove the latest change or restore a backup made for the same game version.
What this guide covers
This is a Windows PC workflow for GTA V Story Mode. Console editions do not use this file-based setup. PC copies are currently distributed as separate Legacy and Enhanced editions, and a download that works for one is not automatically compatible with the other. Every mod page and readme should identify its target edition and supported game build.

Modding is safest when you can return to a known-good state. Keep the original installation intact where possible, store backups outside the GTA V directory, and record what you install. A clean, unmodded Story Mode launch is your baseline; after that, make one controlled change, test, and only then continue.
Identify your GTA V edition and installation folder
Find the game directory
Locate the folder containing GTA5.exe. You will need this path for OpenIV, for checking where a mod’s files belong, and for identifying which files changed. Do not assume that a listing titled simply “GTA V” supports your copy.

Confirm Legacy or Enhanced
Use the edition name shown by your launcher or store account, then compare it with the mod’s requirements. A mod author may publish separate files, separate instructions, or no support at all for one edition. Check the author’s current compatibility notes before downloading dependencies as well as the mod itself.
- Edition: Legacy or Enhanced, exactly as your launcher identifies it.
- Build: the game update or executable version noted by the mod author.
- Installation type: the folder containing the executable you will actually launch.
When an edition or build is not stated, treat the download as unverified rather than guessing. Tools and scripts can fail after a game update even when the mod files have not changed.
Understand the two main kinds of GTA V mods
| Mod type | What it changes | Typical installation method | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script mod | Runs code that adds or changes gameplay, menus, missions, vehicles, or other behavior. | Adds loose script, loader, configuration, or library files to locations specified by the author. Common script setups use an ASI loader and Script Hook V, but requirements are mod-specific. | A game update can make the loader or script incompatible, causing a crash or preventing the game from starting. |
| Archive or replacement mod | Replaces or adds assets inside Rockstar archive files, such as models, textures, or data. | Uses OpenIV and a mirrored archive path under the game’s lower-case mods folder. |
Editing the original archive directly can force a repair or complete reinstall; an incorrect replacement can also crash Story Mode. |
Some projects combine both types. A vehicle package, for example, may require an archive replacement plus a script or configuration file. The mod’s own readme is the authority for dependencies, destination paths, load order, and removal instructions. There is no universal file list that is safe to copy for every mod.
Back up before installing anything
Protect Story Mode saves
Close the game and launcher, then copy the entire Profiles folder from DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles to a location outside the game directory. Keep the copy on a different folder or drive so a game-file repair cannot overwrite both the original and the backup. Label it with the date, edition, and game version.

Back up saves before the first mod and again after a major change that you know works. A save created while a script is active may depend on that script; retaining a clean pre-mod save gives you a dependable fallback.
Choose full or targeted game backups
| Approach | What to copy | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full installation copy | The complete GTA V game folder, plus the separate save backup. | Broad coverage and a simple restore when the copy matches the installed version. | A community backup guide describes a full GTA V folder as well over 100 GB (GTAPoliceMods, 2026). Check your own folder size and available storage before starting. |
| Targeted backup | Every archive the mod will change (often updateupdate.rpf), the entire mods folder, loose .asi, .dll, and .ini files, added scripts, settings, and the save folder. |
Uses much less space and is practical for incremental modding. | Restore requires an accurate inventory. Missing one dependency or configuration file can leave the game in a partially modified state. |
Whichever approach you choose, keep the backup outside the GTA V directory and tie its label to the game version. Do not restore an older archive into a newer, updated installation merely because the filenames match.
Record a change log
- Write down the mod name, edition, version, download date, and required dependencies.
- Note every destination path and the original file that was replaced or copied.
- Save the mod’s readme with your backup; authors can change instructions or remove older files.
- For a replacement archive, record the exact archive path and the date you copied it into the
modsfolder.
Set up OpenIV without touching original archives
Install the required OpenIV components
- Install and open OpenIV, select the GTA V installation, and point it to the folder containing
GTA5.exe. - Open Tools and choose ASI Manager. Install the ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI components when the archive mod or its instructions require them.
- At the game root, create a folder named exactly
modsin lower case. - Inside
mods, reproduce the original archive path. For example, if an instruction refers toupdateupdate.rpf, the working copy belongs atmodsupdateupdate.rpf. - Open and edit the copy under
mods, never the matching archive in the original game path.
OpenIV describes the purpose of this arrangement as follows: “All of your mods will now be in their own folder, and the original files will remain unchanged.” The separation protects the original archives, but it does not back up loose script files, settings, or saves. Those still need their own copies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why the mirrored path matters
OpenIV.ASI redirects supported archive access to the copy in mods. If a mod’s readme specifies another archive, mirror that archive’s complete folder path before editing it. Do not create a shortened path because it looks convenient; the game and the tool expect the archive hierarchy used by the original installation.

Return to original archives
When you need to check the unmodified game, close GTA V and use ASI Manager to disable the OpenIV components, or temporarily move the mods folder out of the game directory as the author’s instructions permit. Keep a backup before deleting anything. Disabling the components changes how archives are read; it does not erase your separate backup of saves or loose files.
Install dependencies only when the mod requires them
Read the author’s current instructions first
For each download, verify the supported edition, game build, prerequisites, destination, and removal method. Common script-mod setups mention Script Hook V and an ASI loader. Archive edits commonly use OpenIV. Those names are not a guarantee that a particular mod needs both, and adding unnecessary loaders creates more failure points.
Obtain tools from their authors’ current release pages and follow the version notes attached to the mod. Script Hook V compatibility is particularly volatile: a GTA V update can break an existing setup until a compatible build is released. Treat “works with GTA V” as incomplete information unless the edition and build are stated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall in a controlled order
- Start from the clean baseline and confirm that unmodded Story Mode launches.
- Install only the loader or framework explicitly required by the next mod.
- Launch Story Mode before adding the mod itself. If the game fails now, the dependency or edition choice is the likely change to investigate.
- Copy the mod’s files to the exact paths in its readme. Do not rename extensions, merge unrelated folders, or overwrite an archive outside
mods. - Keep the downloaded archive and readme with your change log so you can remove the same files later.
Test one mod at a time in Story Mode
Launch Story Mode after every meaningful change. Test the feature in a safe save, check that menus open, and watch for missing textures, infinite loading, script errors, or a crash before loading another mod. Installing several changes at once makes it impossible to identify which file caused a failure.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the game breaks, close it completely and remove the last change first. For a script, move the newly added loose files and configuration out of the game directory. For an archive edit, restore the matching archive in the mods folder from your backup or remove that archive copy according to the mod’s readme. Re-test the clean baseline before trying a different version.
Do not use a modded setup in GTA Online. Rockstar’s published warning says that tampering with GTA Online through mods, scripts, exploits, modified files, or other manipulation while the game is running can result in disciplinary action, including bans or account suspension. A loader’s safeguards do not guarantee safety. Keep separate shortcuts or installation practices if you play both modes, and launch Online only after returning to an unmodified state.

When one mod causes a crash
- Exit GTA V, the launcher, and any mod manager that may still hold files open.
- Remove the most recently installed loose files or move them to a quarantine folder outside the game directory.
- Undo the latest archive edit in the
modscopy, using the backup made before that edit. - Launch Story Mode with only the previously confirmed changes.
- Read the failing mod’s current compatibility notes before reinstalling it. Do not add a second loader or an unverified update as a guess.
When a game update breaks the setup
Assume that loaders, scripts, and archive changes may need updates. First, disable or remove the modded components and verify that the clean game launches. Do not copy an archive from an older backup over a newer game installation: the backup guide warns that version mismatch can replace current files with stale ones.
If the backup is stale, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair function to restore current originals, then rebuild the mods folder from those current files. Reinstall only mods whose authors list support for the new edition and build. After the clean updated game works, make a fresh backup and update your change log.

When you want to remove every mod
- Use ASI Manager to disable OpenIV components, or remove the
modsfolder after preserving it as a backup. - Remove loose script, loader, library, and configuration files that your change log identifies; do not delete unknown files blindly.
- Verify or repair the game installation if original archives were edited directly or if the clean launch still fails.
- Restore the separately backed-up
Profilesfolder only when you need those saves, and keep an untouched copy of the pre-mod saves.
Keep backups usable over time
A backup is useful only when you know what version it represents. Use folders such as GTA-V-Legacy-2026-10-16-clean and GTA-V-Legacy-2026-10-16-mods, or an equivalent naming scheme that records edition, date, and state. Store the archive copy, loose files, settings, saves, readmes, and change log together.
After a game update, verify the clean installation first. Once compatible tools and mods are confirmed and Story Mode works, create a new clean baseline rather than continuing to overwrite the old one. An external backup drive is a practical option when your targeted backup or full copy exceeds the space available on the system drive; choose capacity based on the size of your own installation.
Safety checklist before every launch
- Is this the correct Legacy or Enhanced download for the installed build?
- Is the current save folder copied outside the game directory?
- Did every archive edit go under the lower-case
modsfolder? - Are all loose files and configuration changes listed in your change log?
- Does the mod’s readme explain dependencies and removal?
- Did you test the last change in Story Mode before adding another?
- Are OpenIV and script components disabled or removed before launching GTA Online?
- Does the backup match the installed game version?
Official guidance and its limits
Rockstar Support’s page, updated September 15, 2026, directs players to the Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement, and Mod Guidelines. Consult those current documents for the rules that apply to your account. Rockstar’s accessible 2015 Newswire warning specifically describes disciplinary action for tampering with GTA Online, including bans and potential suspension. It is not a guarantee that any particular single-player tool is permitted in every circumstance, so keep modding confined to Story Mode and follow current official guidance.
