What the Icinga stack does
Icinga 2 performs checks, evaluates results, and publishes state changes. Icinga DB receives that data through Icinga 2’s publishing feature, uses Redis as its transport layer, and writes monitoring history to a SQL database. Icinga Web 2 supplies the authenticated browser interface; the Icinga DB Web module displays current states and historical data there. Icinga Director is optional and adds a structured configuration workflow.
The official quickstart describes the complete single-node arrangement as Icinga 2, Icinga DB, Icinga Web, Icinga DB Web, and Icinga Director. A database is required to store the monitoring data collected by Icinga.

Prepare the VPS before installing packages
Choose a supported host
Use an Ubuntu VPS with administrative access, a stable fully qualified hostname, enough disk space for retained history, and reliable DNS if the interface will be public. A small single-node installation is easiest to operate when Icinga 2, Redis, the Icinga DB daemon, the SQL server, and the web server share one machine. Separate services when database load, availability requirements, or security boundaries justify the added operational work.
Set the hostname and update Ubuntu
Set a name that resolves to the VPS address, then patch the operating system before adding third-party packages:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →sudo hostnamectl set-hostname monitor.example.net
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo reboot
Reconnect after the reboot and verify the release and codename:
. /etc/os-release
echo "$PRETTY_NAME ($VERSION_CODENAME)"
The example in this article expects output identifying Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and noble. If your output differs, use the repository line and package instructions for that release rather than substituting noble.
Plan firewall and TLS rules
Allow SSH only from trusted administration networks. Permit HTTPS to the web interface after TLS is configured, and keep the Icinga API and Redis reachable only from the nodes that need them. Do not expose Redis or the database to the public internet. If a provider firewall and a host firewall are both enabled, apply the restriction in both places.
Install Icinga 2 from the official Ubuntu repository
Icinga recommends its official repositories so that the distribution package manager can resolve compatible Icinga packages and updates. The exact repository command changes with the Ubuntu codename and current signing-key layout, so copy the current Ubuntu command from the official Icinga 2 installation page immediately before running it.
Install repository prerequisites
Install HTTPS transport, download, and GnuPG tooling, then install Icinga’s archive keyring and add the repository entry for the codename you verified above. A typical prerequisite step is:
sudo apt install -y apt-transport-https wget gnupg
After adding the current repository definition, refresh package metadata and install the engine:

sudo apt install -y icinga2
Do not mix repository entries from different Ubuntu releases. If apt update reports an unsigned repository, a missing key, or a distribution mismatch, stop and correct the keyring or codename instead of bypassing signature verification.
Enable the Icinga API
The API is needed for certificate-based node communication and for tools that configure or query Icinga. Run the built-in setup and restart the service:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutesudo icinga2 api setup
sudo systemctl restart icinga2
sudo systemctl enable icinga2
Check the service before continuing:
sudo systemctl status icinga2 --no-pager
sudo icinga2 daemon -C
The configuration check should finish without errors. If it fails, inspect the reported file and line before installing the web layer; a broken engine configuration will make later wizard diagnostics misleading.
Build the Icinga DB data path with Redis and SQL
Install and protect Redis
Install the Redis package supplied for your Ubuntu release, enable it at boot, and restrict its listener to localhost when every component is on the same VPS:
sudo apt install -y redis-server
sudo systemctl enable --now redis-server
sudo systemctl status redis-server --no-pager
Apply the Redis hardening guidance for your package version. If Redis is moved to another host, use a private network, authentication supported by that release, and firewall rules that permit only the Icinga DB daemon and Icinga publisher. Never publish an unauthenticated Redis port.
Install the SQL server
The Ubuntu Web guide lists MariaDB as the normal SQL requirement. Install the distribution-supported MariaDB packages, enable the service, and run the package’s secure-installation procedure. Use a dedicated database account rather than the MariaDB root account for both Icinga Web and the monitoring data path.
For a local web database, create the database and account in MariaDB. The password variable below is deliberately a template: replace {{DB_PASSWORD}} with a long, unique secret stored in your normal secret-management system.
sudo mariadb
CREATE DATABASE icingaweb2 CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_bin;
CREATE USER 'icingaweb2'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '{{DB_PASSWORD}}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON icingaweb2.* TO 'icingaweb2'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;
Use the exact schema and privilege instructions for the Icinga DB daemon version you install. The web application’s database and the monitoring-data database may be separate resources; keeping them separate can simplify retention and permissions on a busier system.

Enable Icinga DB in Icinga 2
Install the Icinga DB packages specified by the current Ubuntu guide, configure the Redis endpoint and SQL connection for the local or remote topology, enable the icingadb feature on the master or single node, and restart Icinga 2. The conceptual sequence is:
sudo icinga2 feature enable icingadb
sudo systemctl restart icinga2
sudo systemctl enable icingadb
Package names and configuration-file locations can differ between Icinga releases, so use the release documentation’s package list and sample configuration rather than guessing a filename. Confirm that both the Icinga DB daemon and Icinga 2 remain active after the restart, and check their journal output if the daemon cannot authenticate to Redis or SQL.
Install Icinga Web 2 on Ubuntu
Apache: the shortest Ubuntu path
Icinga Web requires Icinga 2 and Icinga DB, a web server, PHP 7.2 or newer, and MariaDB or another database backend supported by the current release. The Apache package path installs the web application, command-line utility, and PHP module:
sudo apt install -y icingaweb2 icingacli libapache2-mod-php
The package supplies an Apache configuration. Enable and restart Apache, then verify that PHP is loaded. If the package asks which web server to configure, select Apache and keep the configuration on the same hostname you will use for TLS.
Nginx with PHP-FPM
Nginx is appropriate when the VPS already uses a PHP-FPM reverse-proxy standard. Generate the starting configuration with:
sudo icingacli setup config webserver nginx --document-root /usr/share/icingaweb2/public
Adapt the generated server block to your hostname, TLS certificate, PHP-FPM socket, access restrictions, and log policy. The generated file is a starting point, not a substitute for checking your Nginx and PHP-FPM versions. Reload Nginx only after its configuration test succeeds.

sudo icingacli setup token show
The token authorizes the initial web setup and should be treated as a secret during provisioning. Do not paste it into a public ticket, shell history shared with other users, or an article.
Open the setup URL over HTTPS
After TLS and the web server are configured, open:
https://your-hostname/icingaweb2/setup
Replace your-hostname with the DNS name on the certificate. The wizard uses the token first, then asks for the web application’s database resource, authentication method, and module configuration.
- Enter the setup token. Paste the token generated by
icingacli. - Review requirements. The wizard checks PHP extensions, writable paths, the web server, and database access. Install any missing PHP module with Ubuntu’s package manager, restart Apache or PHP-FPM, and reload the page.
- Create the database resource. Select the MariaDB database and enter the dedicated
icingaweb2account and its secret. The documented local flow expects this database and user to exist already; the wizard does not create them through the local Unix socket. - Choose authentication. Configure the local database authentication method first unless your organization already has a supported directory service ready.
- Configure monitoring. Point the monitoring module at the Icinga 2 API and provide the API credentials and certificate information created during API setup.
- Enable Icinga DB Web. Configure its Redis and SQL resources using the same endpoints supplied to the Icinga DB daemon.
- Finish and sign in. Create an administrator account, remove or restrict access to the setup endpoint, and confirm that current host and service states load.
If the wizard reports a missing extension after installation, restart the web server rather than merely refreshing the browser. If it reports a database connection failure, test the account from the VPS, confirm the host part of the account matches the connection origin, and verify that the database service is listening on the intended private interface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add the VPS and other servers to monitoring
Monitor the Icinga VPS itself
Start with the machine running Icinga. Define it as a host and add checks for reachability, disk usage, load, memory, critical processes, certificate expiry, and the Icinga, Redis, SQL, and web services. A monitor that cannot alert when its own disk fills or its database stops is incomplete.
Choose an agent or a network check
For a remote Linux or Windows server, install the Icinga agent when you need operating-system metrics and command execution under the Icinga certificate model. Register the node with the master, exchange certificates through the API workflow, and restrict agent traffic to the monitoring network. Keep private keys and API credentials out of configuration snippets shared with other administrators.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use network or service checks instead when the requirement is limited to an externally reachable endpoint. Typical checks include:
- ICMP or TCP reachability
- HTTP and HTTPS status, response time, and certificate expiration
- SSH, RDP, database, mail, and application ports
- Disk capacity and inode usage
- CPU load, memory pressure, and process presence
- Application-specific health endpoints
Set warning and critical thresholds that reflect the workload. A certificate check should warn before renewal becomes urgent; a disk check should leave enough headroom for logs, database growth, and package updates.
Use files, CLI, or Director
Plain configuration files and the Icinga CLI are transparent and easy to review in version control. Icinga Director adds forms, inventories, and automation for teams managing many hosts. Choose one workflow as the source of truth; editing generated objects manually while Director also manages them creates confusing drift.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Deployment choices and their trade-offs
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web server | Apache package path | Nginx with generated configuration and PHP-FPM | Apache is quickest on Ubuntu; Nginx fits an existing reverse-proxy standard but needs more manual integration. |
| Topology | All components on one VPS | Separate web, SQL, Redis, or monitoring nodes | One node is simpler and cheaper to operate; separation improves isolation and scaling but adds networking, backups, and failure points. |
| SQL backend | MySQL or MariaDB versions supported by the current guides | Another backend only where the relevant Icinga component documents support | Match the exact version and schema instructions instead of assuming database compatibility. |
| Configuration | Files and CLI | Icinga Director | Files are explicit and reviewable; Director provides a structured UI and automation workflow. |
Secure the public interface
- Serve Icinga Web only over HTTPS with a certificate whose hostname matches the URL administrators use.
- Restrict the setup path after provisioning, and do not leave initial setup accessible to the whole internet.
- Allow API traffic only between trusted Icinga nodes and administrators who need it.
- Bind Redis and SQL to private interfaces or localhost, use strong unique credentials, and enforce host firewall rules.
- Use separate administrator accounts and remove unused accounts promptly.
- Keep API certificates, private keys, database passwords, and agent credentials in protected storage rather than article snippets or public repositories.
Backups, upgrades, and recovery
Back up configuration and certificates
At minimum, include these Icinga paths in a backup policy:
/etc/icinga2for configuration and feature settings/var/lib/icinga2/cafor the master certificate authority key pair/var/lib/icinga2/certsfor node certificates/var/lib/icinga2runtime and state files required by your deployment
Protect the CA private key as carefully as a root credential. Losing it can require re-enrolling nodes and replacing certificates.
Back up data stores and test restoration
Back up the SQL database using a consistent dump or your provider’s database snapshot mechanism, and include Redis persistence when your architecture relies on it for recoverable state. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so perform a test restore on an isolated VPS and verify that Icinga Web can read historical data and that agents reconnect.
Patch deliberately
Patch Ubuntu and Icinga packages on a schedule, read release notes for schema or repository changes, and monitor free disk space. Before a major upgrade, capture a fresh database backup, archive the configuration and certificate directories, validate the configuration with icinga2 daemon -C, and record a rollback plan.
Troubleshooting the first installation
apt update fails after adding the repository
Check the Ubuntu codename, signing-key path, and repository distribution in the current official guide. Remove duplicate or stale entries rather than disabling signature checks. The repository must match the release reported by /etc/os-release.
Icinga 2 will not start
Run sudo icinga2 daemon -C, then inspect sudo journalctl -u icinga2 -b. Correct syntax, missing include files, API certificate permissions, or an invalid feature configuration before restarting.
The Icinga DB daemon cannot connect
Confirm Redis is active, the endpoint and credentials match on both sides, and the SQL account has the required schema privileges. For a remote data store, test private-network routing and firewall rules from the Icinga VPS rather than from your workstation.
The web wizard reports missing PHP requirements
Install the missing PHP extension for your Ubuntu release, restart Apache or PHP-FPM, and reload the requirements page. Mixing PHP packages from unrelated repositories can leave the command-line and web-server PHP versions different; verify both when the error persists.
Hosts appear but show no history
Check that the Icinga DB publishing feature, daemon, Redis connection, SQL schema, and Icinga DB Web resource all point to the same data path. A working Icinga 2 check alone does not prove that the event has reached SQL.

What a complete first deployment looks like
A sound single-VPS installation has a verified Ubuntu codename, signed Icinga packages, a healthy Icinga API, protected Redis and SQL services, a TLS-enabled Icinga Web login, and at least one self-monitoring host. It also has tested backups of configuration, certificates, SQL data, and required Redis state. Once those pieces work, add remote agents or network checks one group at a time and keep the configuration workflow consistent.
