What Just Enough Items does
Just Enough Items (JEI) is a Minecraft mod that displays an item list beside your inventory and lets you inspect crafting recipes and item uses. It is a recipe viewer rather than a replacement for the server’s content: the server and its installed mods still determine which items and recipes exist. JEI reads that content and presents it in a searchable interface.

Modrinth reported 83.2 million downloads in 2026; that is a platform download count, not a promise of performance, compatibility, or a successful installation on your particular server.
Once loaded, JEI normally shows a vertical item column and a search field on the right side of an inventory or other supported screen. Hovering an item and pressing R opens recipes for it; pressing U shows its uses. Ctrl+O toggles the item-list overlay. The search field supports useful filters such as @mod for a mod name, #tooltip for tooltip text, a leading minus sign to exclude matches (for example, -stone), and quoted phrases for an exact phrase search.

Check your Minecraft version and loader first
JEI jars are tied to both the Minecraft release and the mod loader. “Minecraft 1.20” is not a safe substitute for “Minecraft 1.20.1,” and a Forge jar cannot be used in a Fabric installation. Record the exact version shown by the server and the loader it starts with before downloading anything.
| Server setup | JEI download to select | Additional requirement | Client action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric | JEI build filtered to the exact Minecraft version and Fabric | Matching Fabric API is required | Install the same JEI build and matching loader on each client that uses JEI |
| Forge | JEI build filtered to the exact Minecraft version and Forge | Use the Forge installation for that version | Install the same JEI build and Forge version on participating clients |
| NeoForge | JEI build filtered to the exact Minecraft version and NeoForge | Use the NeoForge installation for that version | Install the same JEI build and NeoForge version on participating clients |
Do not rename, unzip, or otherwise modify the downloaded jar. Keep the server’s mod set coherent: a JEI build selected for one Minecraft release or loader is not interchangeable with a build selected for another.
Download the matching JEI files
1. Identify the exact server combination
Look at the server launcher or its startup profile and write down the full Minecraft version, such as 1.21.2 or 1.21.1, plus Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. If the server is part of a modpack, use the version and loader declared by that pack rather than choosing a newer file manually.
2. Filter the project page
Open the JEI project on CurseForge or JEI on Modrinth. Filter downloads by the exact Minecraft version and loader. Read the file’s metadata before downloading; a file that merely looks close in its name can still target a different patch release or loader.
3. Add Fabric API when using Fabric
Fabric servers need the Fabric API version compatible with the same Minecraft release. Download that API separately and place it in the server’s mods folder alongside JEI. Forge and NeoForge use their corresponding JEI builds and do not use Fabric API.
4. Keep client and server builds aligned
Players who need the JEI interface should install the same JEI build and the same loader family on their client. In a modded environment, the rest of the client’s required mods must also match the server’s pack. A player can connect without seeing JEI if the client lacks the mod, but that does not solve recipe synchronization requirements on newer Minecraft versions.

Install JEI on the server
The procedure is the same whether the server runs on a dedicated machine or a local computer. Stop the server before changing its mods so files are not locked or left in a partially written state.
- Stop Minecraft cleanly. Use the server’s normal stop command or shutdown control and wait until the process has exited.
- Open the server’s main directory. This is the directory containing the server jar and configuration folders. Locate its
modsfolder; create that folder only if the loader’s normal installation did not create it. - Copy the unmodified JEI jar. Place the file selected for your exact Minecraft version and loader directly inside
mods. Do not put it in a nested folder, and do not extract its contents. - Add dependencies. For Fabric, copy the matching Fabric API jar into the same folder. Keep any other mod dependencies required by your server pack there as well.
- Check for duplicates. Leave one JEI jar for the target version and loader. Remove older JEI files or duplicate downloads that could cause the loader to choose conflicting classes.
- Start the server again. Watch the startup log for a successful mod load. A crash report or a clear “wrong version” or “wrong loader” message is a compatibility problem, not a missing in-game keybind.
- Install the client copy. On each player’s client, place the same JEI build in that installation’s
modsfolder and launch it with the matching Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge profile.
The installation guide at jei-mod.com/installing-jei provides the project’s loader-specific installation guidance. Server hosts may expose a file manager instead of a local folder; the destination is still the server’s active mods directory for the selected loader.

Does JEI have to be installed server-side?
| Minecraft version | Server-side JEI | Client-only behavior | What server installation restores |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.2 and newer | Required for modded recipe synchronization | Can display vanilla information, but may miss recipes added by server mods | Recipes held by the server are sent to clients correctly |
| 1.21.1 and earlier | Optional for basic viewing on a vanilla or modded server | JEI can run client-only, with three documented feature restrictions | The recipe-grid “+” button, some NBT-heavy item cheating, and deletion of items from the list |
Minecraft 1.21.2 and newer
These versions keep recipes on the server and send them to connected clients. Install JEI on the server, not only on the player’s computer, so recipes supplied by server-side mods are synchronized. A client-only installation can leave the interface visible while omitting recipes that the server knows about. The version boundary and behavior are documented on the CurseForge project page, Modrinth, and the installation guide.
Minecraft 1.21.1 and earlier
JEI can operate on the client while connecting to either a vanilla or modded server. That arrangement is suitable when you only need a local item list and recipe viewer, but it intentionally lacks three capabilities: the + button in a recipe grid, some NBT-heavy item-cheating actions, and deleting items from JEI’s list. Installing JEI on the server restores those functions where the server and game mode permit them.
Verify that JEI loaded
- Join a world or server with the client profile that contains JEI.
- Open your inventory. Look for the vertical item column and search bar at the right side.
- Hover a known item and press R. A recipe view confirms that the viewer is responding.
- Press U on an item to check its uses, then use Ctrl+O to confirm that the overlay can be hidden and shown.
- Search for a modded item that is definitely installed on the server. Its presence tests synchronization more effectively than checking only vanilla blocks.
If the list appears but a particular recipe does not, first determine whether that recipe is supplied by a server mod and whether your Minecraft version is 1.21.2 or newer. On those versions, a client-only JEI cannot obtain all server-held recipes.
Fix a missing item list or empty recipe view
JEI is not in the loaded mod list
Confirm that the jar is in the active installation’s mods folder, not the launcher’s general download directory or a different instance. Check the server and client separately: putting JEI on the server does not automatically install it into a player’s client profile.

The version or loader does not match
Re-check all three identifiers: Minecraft patch version, loader family, and JEI file metadata. A 1.20 file is not interchangeable with 1.20.1, and Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge files are separate targets. Download a replacement filtered to the exact combination instead of trying to force the existing jar to load.
The overlay was toggled off
Press Ctrl+O while an inventory screen is open. If the list returns, JEI was loaded and only its overlay visibility had changed.
Duplicate JEI jars are present
Stop the game and inspect both server and client mods folders. Remove duplicate copies and retain one file for the current version and loader. A second copy can produce a loader error or unpredictable startup behavior.
Another recipe viewer occupies the same area
A second recipe-viewing mod can cover JEI’s panel or intercept the same interface. Temporarily remove the other viewer, launch again, and test the inventory. If JEI appears, choose one viewer or configure the other mod so the two interfaces do not overlap.

Fabric API is missing
On Fabric, verify that the matching Fabric API jar is in the same mods folder as JEI. The API must target the same Minecraft release; an API for another patch can be as incompatible as the wrong JEI build.
Only modded recipes are missing on a newer server
For Minecraft 1.21.2 and newer, install JEI server-side and restart both server and client. A client-only copy cannot replace the server’s role in distributing recipes added by server mods.
Older-version cheat actions do not work
On 1.21.1 and earlier, client-only JEI deliberately disables the recipe-grid + button, some NBT-heavy item cheating, and deletion of items from the list. This is expected behavior. Add JEI to the server if you require those functions and the server’s permissions or game mode allow them.

| Goal | Server JEI | Client JEI | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| View only vanilla recipes on a 1.21.1-or-earlier server | Not required | Required for the interface | Client-only is sufficient if the three restricted features are not needed |
| View recipes added by server mods on 1.21.2 or newer | Required | Required for the visible interface | Install matching JEI on both sides |
| Use the recipe-grid “+” button or broader cheat actions on older versions | Required | Required | Install matching JEI on both sides and observe server permissions |
| Run a Fabric server | Required when using the newer synchronization model; otherwise version-dependent | Required for the interface | Use the Fabric JEI build plus matching Fabric API |
| Run Forge or NeoForge | Use the corresponding loader build when server synchronization or shared features require it | Use the same loader family and JEI build | Never substitute a Fabric jar |
Keep JEI working after updates
Treat JEI as part of the server’s modpack, not as an independent client utility. When Minecraft, the loader, or the pack changes, re-check JEI’s project page and select a file for the new exact combination. Update the server and clients together, remove obsolete jars, and restart both sides before testing a recipe.
When diagnosing a future failure, record the Minecraft version, loader, JEI filename, whether JEI is installed on the server and client, and whether the problem affects every recipe or only recipes from one server mod. That information separates a file-placement problem from a synchronization or compatibility problem quickly.

Bottom line
For a modern modded server, the reliable installation is simple: match the exact Minecraft version and loader, copy the unmodified JEI jar into the server’s mods folder, add Fabric API when applicable, install the same JEI build on clients, and restart. Minecraft 1.21.2 and newer requires the server copy for complete recipe synchronization; on older releases, client-only JEI works for basic viewing but omits the documented recipe-grid and cheat-mode features.
