Install Left 4 Dead 2 server content in the server’s own left4dead2 tree, not in your personal game folder. Use left4dead2/addons/workshop/ for Workshop campaigns, left4dead2/addons/ for non-Workshop campaigns and ordinary VPK addons, and MetaMod:Source plus SourceMod for server-side plugins. A reliable setup is: update the dedicated server with SteamCMD, copy each content type to its required path, restart, then verify from the server console.

Know which kind of mod you are installing
“Mod” can mean several incompatible things in Left 4 Dead 2. A Workshop campaign, a standalone VPK, a SourceMod gameplay plugin, and a client-only cosmetic may all be called an addon, but the server handles them differently. Identify the release before copying files.

Prepare the dedicated server
Install or update with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the supported way to download and update the Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server. Use the anonymous account and the application ID 222860.
#1 Best Overall
- On day one, Left 4 Dead 2 features more co-operative campaigns, more campaigns and maps for the versus game modes than the original Left 4 Dead did, plus support for Survival Mode right out of the box.
- Left 4 Dead 2 features quality co-op action gaming from the makers of Half-life, Portal, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
- Updated “AI Director 2.0" technology expands players’ ability to customize level layout, world objects, weather, and lighting to reflect different times of day, creating fresh gameplay every time.
- Put a whole slew of melee weapons including axes, chainsaws, frying pans and baseball bats to use which allow you to get up close with the zombies.
- The game features four different survivors, a new storyline and new dialog.
- Install SteamCMD and choose a location with enough disk space for the server and its custom content.
- Open SteamCMD and sign in anonymously.
- Run
app_update 222860. Run it again whenever you need to bring the server files up to date. - Wait for SteamCMD to report completion before launching the server.
The paths used in the current dedicated-server guide are:
- Windows:
C:SteamCMDsteamappscommonLeft 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server - GNU/Linux:
/home/steam/Steam/steamapps/common/Left 4 Dead 2 Dedicated Server
Your installation can use another root; what matters is that every path below is relative to the server’s left4dead2 directory, not the client’s copy of the game.
Keep server configuration in the server tree
Place persistent server settings in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. Keep a backup before installing plugins or changing map and mode settings. If you run more than one instance, verify that the launch script points to the instance whose cfg and addons directories you are editing.
Launch from the correct directory
Launch the dedicated server from its left4dead2 directory. A process started from a different game installation can appear healthy while reading the wrong configuration and addons. When troubleshooting, print or inspect the working directory used by your service, batch file, or container and compare it with the path where you copied the files.

Install Workshop campaigns
Valve changed dedicated-server Workshop handling on 19 February 2013. Workshop campaigns belong in:
left4dead2/addons/workshop/
That directory mirrors the location used by the client for Workshop campaign content. Valve’s rule is specific: campaigns downloaded from the Workshop go in the workshop subdirectory, while campaigns not downloaded from the Workshop can remain in the ordinary addons directory.
- Stop the server before copying or replacing campaign files.
- Create
left4dead2/addons/workshop/if it does not already exist. - Copy the Workshop campaign files into that directory, preserving the files supplied by the release.
- Remove duplicate copies from unrelated addon folders; duplicate or stale versions make it difficult to tell which content loaded.
- Start the server and inspect the console for addon parse errors before inviting players.
- Change to the campaign and test a complete map transition, not only the first map.
A correct directory does not guarantee compatibility. A campaign may depend on other files, a particular game update, or client-side downloads. Follow the campaign author’s dedicated-server instructions when they differ from the default directory rule.
Install non-Workshop campaigns and VPK addons
Copy the VPK, do not unpack it unnecessarily
Most ordinary Left 4 Dead 2 addons are distributed as VPK files. A VPK is a digital addon package. On a client, Valve documents double-clicking a VPK or copying it to the Add-ons folder. A dedicated server should receive the VPK in the server’s matching addons directory:
Rank #3
- Co-operative gameplay in epic struggle between survivors and zombies
- Choose to play as survivor or 4 types of infected mutants
- Set across 4 massive campaigns
- Game creates a unique and dramatic experience based on players' actions
- Multiplayer games for 1-to-8 players
left4dead2/addons/
Unless the author specifies another location, leave the VPK as supplied. Unpacking it, renaming it, or nesting it under an extra folder can prevent the game from recognizing it.
Server-side installation procedure
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Read the addon’s release notes for server support, required dependencies, and any special path.
- Copy the
.vpkto the server’sleft4dead2/addons/directory. Useleft4dead2/addons/workshop/only when it is a Workshop campaign. - Start the server and look for parse, dependency, or file-access errors in the console and logs.
- Join with a test account and exercise the addon’s actual feature. A file being present is not proof that it loaded.
Some VPKs are client-only, such as a sound, texture, HUD, or weapon skin. Others alter maps or gameplay and may need to be installed by both the server and every client. The addon author’s compatibility notes determine that split; the directory rule alone cannot.

VPK content and server plugins use different systems. MetaMod:Source is the loader for server plugins. SourceMod runs as a MetaMod plugin and supplies the scripting, command, configuration, and administration framework used by many L4D2 server plugins. Install both in the same server installation.
Install MetaMod:Source
- Download a stable MetaMod:Source build that supports Left 4 Dead 2.
- Extract its
addonsfolder into the server’sleft4dead2directory, merging folders when prompted. - Generate the L4D2-specific
metamod.vdfusing the MetaMod distribution’s VDF generator or instructions. - Copy that generated VDF into
left4dead2/addons/. - Do not leave the VDF in your downloads folder or in the client installation.
Install SourceMod
- Download a stable SourceMod build compatible with the installed MetaMod version and Left 4 Dead 2.
- Extract SourceMod’s
addonsandcfgfolders into the same serverleft4dead2directory. - Merge, rather than replace, existing directories so you do not delete MetaMod files.
- Restart the server completely. A map change is not a reliable substitute for a process restart during the initial installation.
Verify the loader before adding plugins
Open the dedicated-server console and run:
meta version
Then run:
meta list
A successful result shows MetaMod loaded and lists the plugins it knows about. If the command is unknown, MetaMod is not loading; check the server root, the VDF location, file permissions, and whether the launch script is using the installation you edited. Fix the loader first instead of troubleshooting individual .smx files.

Add SourceMod plugins safely
Copy the files named by the plugin release
A normal SourceMod plugin is an .smx file. Copy it to:
left4dead2/addons/sourcemod/plugins/
Some releases also provide configuration files, gamedata, translations, include files, or an optional scripting source tree. Install each item at the path specified by that release. The scripting directory is for source and compilation work; the compiled .smx is the file the running server loads.
Account for dependencies
Read the plugin’s documentation for required extensions, libraries, gamedata, and other plugins. A plugin can appear in the plugins folder yet fail to load because a dependency is missing or its gamedata is outdated. Copying every file into one directory is not a substitute for following the release’s path instructions.
Load and test one change at a time
- Stop the server before installing a new plugin or replacing its gamedata.
- Copy the
.smxand all required support files. - Start the server and run
meta list. - Read the SourceMod and server logs for load failures, missing signatures, or configuration errors.
- Test the plugin’s command or gameplay behavior on a private session.
- Only then add the next plugin.
When a release documents a reload command, use it only after the initial installation is working. For gamedata or binary changes, perform a full restart unless the author explicitly says a reload is safe.

Choose an installation approach
| Approach | Best for | File access | Update burden | Networking and control | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows SteamCMD | Operators who want a graphical file system and direct console access | Direct access to the dedicated-server folders | Run SteamCMD updates and maintain addons yourself | Configure the Windows service, firewall, and launch parameters | Server console, logs, and meta list |
| GNU/Linux SteamCMD | Operators comfortable with shell scripts and service management | Direct access through the shell or file transfer | Run SteamCMD updates and maintain permissions, addons, and services | Configure the host firewall and published game port | Console output, logs, and meta list |
| Docker | Operators already managing containerized game services | Mount a host custom-content directory into the container | Update the image and mounted content according to the image documentation | Set container ports and networking explicitly | Container logs, server console, and meta list |
| Managed hosting | Operators who prefer someone else to maintain the host and network | Usually a provider panel or file-transfer access; exact controls vary | Partly handled by the provider, while you still manage addon compatibility | Provider handles host networking; you configure the game instance | Panel console, logs, and in-game testing |
Self-hosting gives you the clearest access to files and logs. Managed hosting trades that control for a recurring service and less responsibility for operating-system updates, networking, and uptime. Whichever approach you choose, the L4D2 directory structure and plugin verification steps remain the same.

A containerized deployment can keep custom content outside the image. The Left4DevOps documentation uses a host directory mounted into the container’s /addons/ path. Put the custom addon files in the host directory, mount it at /addons/, and verify inside the running container that the files are visible where the server expects them.
Mount content and configuration
- Keep a host-side directory for custom addons so recreating the container does not erase them.
- Mount that directory into
/addons/as documented by the image you use. - Apply the image’s documented settings for
server.cfg, maps, modes, restart behavior, and other environment options. - After each image or content update, inspect the container logs and run
meta listfrom the server console.
Publish both protocols when using bridge networking
With Docker bridge networking, publish the game port over both TCP and UDP, using the same external and internal port unless your deployment documentation says otherwise. Publishing only one protocol, or mapping different port numbers, can allow the process to start while preventing new players from connecting.
Install content for the right audience
The installation location answers where the server reads a file; it does not answer who must possess that file. Use this checklist for each release:
- Server-only: MetaMod, SourceMod,
.smxplugins, plugin configuration, and server gamedata. - Server and clients: maps, campaigns, or custom assets when the release requires clients to have matching content.
- Client-only: many HUD, texture, sound, and cosmetic changes that do not affect the server simulation.
- Author-defined: unusual packages with an installer, a dependency chain, or a custom directory.
Tell players exactly what they need before a scheduled session. A server can load a campaign correctly and still disconnect clients who lack a required asset. Conversely, installing a client cosmetic on the server will not make it appear for everyone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTroubleshoot in a controlled order
The server starts but the addon is ignored
- Confirm you edited the active server’s
left4dead2directory, not the client’s. - Check that a Workshop campaign is in
addons/workshopand a non-Workshop VPK is inaddons. - Make sure the VPK was not unpacked, renamed, or placed inside an extra nested folder.
- Remove duplicate old versions and restart.
meta commands are unknown
- Verify MetaMod’s files are under the server’s
left4dead2tree. - Regenerate the L4D2-specific
metamod.vdfand place it inleft4dead2/addons/. - Check permissions and the launch working directory.
- Restart the process and inspect the earliest startup messages for a loader error.
MetaMod loads but a SourceMod plugin does not
- Run
meta listand confirm SourceMod appears. - Confirm the plugin’s compiled
.smxis inaddons/sourcemod/plugins/. - Install every required extension, gamedata file, translation, and configuration at the documented path.
- Check logs for an outdated signature, missing dependency, or wrong game build.
- Test with the plugin disabled if it causes crashes or map-transition failures, then consult the author’s compatibility notes.
Players cannot connect to a Docker server
- Confirm the game port is published for both TCP and UDP when using bridge networking.
- Check that the external port players use matches the port advertised by the server.
- Review host-firewall rules and container logs.
- Verify that the server is not restarting repeatedly because of an addon parse error.
The addon works locally but not on the dedicated server
A local client may load content from its personal Workshop cache, subscribe automatically, or tolerate files that a dedicated server cannot use. Reproduce the installation on the server itself: copy the release to the server path, restart, inspect logs, and check whether the author explicitly supports dedicated servers. A client-only cosmetic is not evidence that the package contains a server plugin.
Use a repeatable update and rollback routine
- Record the addon or plugin version, installation date, and files you changed.
- Back up
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg, theaddonstree, and plugin configuration before updating. - Stop the server before replacing a VPK, MetaMod build, SourceMod build, plugin, or gamedata.
- Update one component at a time, then restart and run the relevant verification command.
- Read the console and logs before allowing public players to join.
- If the server fails, restore the last known-good file set rather than adding more changes. Remove the newest addon or plugin, restart, and confirm the baseline works.
This routine separates a bad Workshop package from a loader problem and a loader problem from a network problem. It also gives you a clear rollback point when a game update invalidates plugin gamedata.
