Install Hytale content on the server, not on each player’s computer. Stop the server, make a backup, copy a compatible asset pack or plugin into the correct mods directory, enable it in the world’s New World Options, then restart and inspect the logs. Asset packs are zip files or folders containing manifest.json; plugins are server-side code packages such as a .jar. Players should normally be able to join without installing a separate client mod.

The important distinction is scope: the global Mods folder makes content available to multiple worlds, while a world’s mods folder limits it to that save. Plugins add Java-side behavior, whereas asset packs add or override game assets. The sections below show the paths, deployment sequence, compatibility checks and recovery steps.

How Hytale’s server-first modding model works
Hytale’s stated design is “server-side first”: the host chooses the plugins and asset packs, and the host is responsible for loading them. The official asset guidance says only the server or world host has to download Asset Packs and Mods. In normal cases, a player connects with an unmodified client and receives the content or behavior the server provides.
This does not mean every package is universally compatible. A plugin can target a particular server build, depend on another plugin, or require a rebuild after a protocol change. An asset pack can be valid but disabled for the world you are entering. Treat server-side installation and world activation as two separate tasks.

Asset packs and plugins are different things

Do not rename a plugin as an asset pack or expect an asset pack to provide Java behavior. They are loaded by different systems, even though both commonly live below a directory named mods.
Before changing the server
1. Confirm the package and its requirements
Use the package’s supported Hytale version, dependency list and installation notes. Update 6’s mod browser exposes supported game versions, which is useful when deciding whether a download matches your server. For a plugin, also check whether it requires another plugin, a particular Java runtime, a generated configuration file or a specific server build. Never assume that a package built for one update will load on the next.
2. Back up the server and stop it
Make a copy of the world saves and the server configuration before copying files. Stop the server cleanly before editing its directories so that files are not being read or overwritten while you work. Hytale’s official material does not prescribe one universal stop command for every operating system or hosting panel, so use the stop control provided by your own console, service manager or panel rather than applying a platform-specific command as if it were universal.
3. Keep a rollback copy
Record which files you added and keep the previous versions of the server and plugins. If the next start fails, removing the newly added package or restoring the backup should be a reversible operation. A simple dated backup folder is enough for a small server; larger servers should also retain their normal automated backup history.
Find the correct Hytale Mods folder
There are two useful scopes: a global Mods folder and a world-local mods folder. The exact location depends on whether you are running a user installation, a dedicated server directory or a hosting panel. Do not confuse the game client’s data directories with the directory used by your dedicated server.

If your host uses a control panel, its file manager may display a server root with a mods directory rather than the Windows user path above. Follow the panel’s server-root layout, but preserve the same rule: install into the server instance that actually starts the world.

Install an asset pack
- Stop the server and back up the world. Do not replace files while the server is running.
- Check the package structure. The item you copy should be a zip file or an unpacked folder that contains
manifest.json. If the download contains an extra outer folder, open it and verify that the manifest is inside the package root rather than buried one level too deep. - Choose the scope. Copy the zip or folder into the global Mods folder for reusable content, or into
Saves<world>modsfor one world. - Preserve the package files. Do not convert the pack into a different archive format or rename the manifest. Use the structure supplied by the creator or exported by the Asset Editor.
- Start the server and open the world settings. Installed Asset Packs and Mods appear under the New World menu’s Options. Enable the pack for the world before launching or loading it.
- Restart after activation and inspect the log. A visible entry for the pack, or the absence of a loading error, is a better confirmation than seeing a file in the directory. If the log reports a malformed manifest, missing dependency or incompatible version, stop and correct that issue before inviting players.
What belongs in manifest.json
The official asset example includes the following schema fields: Group, Name, Version, Description, Authors, Website, Dependencies, OptionalDependencies, LoadBefore, DisabledByDefault, IncludesAssetPack and SubPlugins. Use the official schema and the Asset Editor when creating or editing a manifest instead of inventing field names or values.
Dependency and load-order fields matter when several packs or sub-plugins are installed. A pack that is present but disabled by default may still need to be enabled in the world options. Conversely, declaring a dependency that is not installed can prevent the package from loading.
When a pack works in one world but not another
First check scope. A pack created in the Asset Editor may have been written to the source world’s mods folder, making it visible there but not in other saves. Copy the pack to the global Mods folder, restart the server and look again under the other world’s New World Options. If it still does not appear, verify that the copied item itself contains manifest.json and that the server log does not show a version or dependency error.
Install a Hytale plugin
Plugins use Hytale’s Java server API and must be deployed according to the plugin author’s instructions. The general sequence is the same as for an asset pack—stop, back up, copy, enable if required, restart and read the log—but the files and generated directories differ by plugin.

- Read the plugin’s compatibility notes. Confirm the Hytale build, required dependencies and whether the plugin needs a rebuild for the current protocol.
- Stop the server and make a backup. Include the world and the server’s existing
modsdirectory. - Copy the plugin package into the server’s Mods directory. Do not place a server plugin in a client-only data folder.
- Start once to let the plugin initialize. Some plugins create a configuration or data directory only after the first successful load.
- Follow the plugin’s generated-file instructions. Place scripts, configuration or dependencies exactly where the plugin expects them.
- Restart after making changes. Many server plugins load at startup; editing a file while the process is running may not apply the change.
- Read the startup log. Check for API errors, missing dependencies, duplicate plugins, Java exceptions and version mismatches.
Concrete example: HytaleJS
The HytaleJS deployment example uses this sequence:
- Copy
HytaleJS.jartohytale-server/mods/HytaleJS.jar. - Start the server once. The plugin generates a directory named
bmstefanski_HytaleJSunder the Mods directory. - Place your JavaScript files in
hytale-server/mods/bmstefanski_HytaleJS/scripts/. - Restart the server so HytaleJS loads the scripts.
The generated directory name and script path are specific to this example. Other plugins may create different folders or may not use scripts at all, so do not copy this layout blindly to unrelated plugins.
Enable installed content for a world
Copying a file makes it available to the server; it does not necessarily make it active in every world. In the New World menu, open Options and look for the installed Asset Packs and Mods. Enable the content that world should use, then create or launch the world as appropriate for your server’s workflow.
If an item is absent from the list, troubleshoot discovery before changing gameplay settings:
- Confirm that the server started from the directory where you placed the files.
- Check whether the package is in the global Mods folder or the intended world’s
modsfolder. - Verify that an asset pack contains
manifest.jsonat its package root. - Look for a disabled-by-default setting, unmet dependency or incompatible version in the log.
- Restart after copying or removing files; a running process may not rescan the directory.
Do players need to install Hytale mods?
For the server-side-first system described by Hytale, players generally do not need to install a separate client mod. The host downloads and enables the server content, and players connect to that host. This is the intended experience for server-managed asset packs and plugins.

There are still practical limits. A package can require a newer game build, fail to load because of a dependency, or be unsuitable for a particular server configuration. A player who cannot connect should first be checked against the server’s version and log output rather than being told to copy files into a client Mods folder. Only install client-side files when the package’s own instructions explicitly require them.

Version alignment is the most important compatibility check for plugins. Update 6 records a protocol change from hytale/2 to hytale/3, with packet layouts changing again later in the cycle. Its guidance is explicit: servers and plugins need a rebuild before they will connect after the protocol change. A plugin that worked before the update may therefore need a new release, not merely a file copy.

Update 6 also documents a server boot crash involving sub-plugins with a non-zero parent patch version. That example illustrates why parent and child plugin versions, dependency declarations and release notes must be checked together. If a server starts crashing immediately after a plugin update, remove the newly added package, restore the backup and obtain a build that supports the exact server version.
The Hytale documentation pages referenced for this installation workflow displayed Release 0.7.2 when checked. Treat that label as a documentation snapshot, not a guarantee that your installed build has identical menus or APIs; verify the version shown by your server and by the package you are installing.
Use the in-game mod browser when it fits
Update 6 introduced a first version of an in-game mod browser in the Hytale main menu. It provides categories and search, shows featured, popular and recently updated mods, displays supported-version information, offers install buttons and includes a My Library view for updating or removing mods. This route can reduce manual file copying when the package is published there, but it does not remove the need to verify server scope, dependencies and world activation.

Where to obtain Hytale mods
CurseForge discovery and installation
CurseForge states that Hytale mods are available through its website and application for discovery, installation and updates. It also supports creator publishing workflows. This can make version information and updates easier to find than an arbitrary download link, but the same server checks still apply: read the supported Hytale version, dependencies and deployment instructions before placing anything in the server’s Mods directory.

Creators can use Hytale’s in-game Asset Editor without an account, while publishing through CurseForge requires a CurseForge account and moderation approval. Those publishing requirements do not affect a server operator who is simply installing a package.
Manual downloads
Manual installation is appropriate when a plugin or pack is distributed outside an in-game browser. Keep the original archive until the server has loaded successfully, inspect its top-level files, and record the package version. Do not run an unknown executable just to install an asset pack; asset packs should be data packages, while a plugin’s server-side executable component should be the documented plugin file.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Read logs in the right order
- Find the first error that appears after the server begins loading the package; later errors may be consequences.
- Identify the named file, plugin, manifest field or dependency.
- Compare the package’s supported version with the server’s actual version.
- Remove one suspect package at a time and restart, rather than deleting several packages and losing the cause.
- Once the server starts, re-enable content one world at a time and verify the player connection.
Mod monetization and EULA boundaries
Hytale’s EULA permits independent mod monetization subject to restrictions. A monetized mod must not redistribute Hytale game files, imply official endorsement, include malware, violate law or third-party rights, or use prohibited NFT or cryptocurrency schemes. These are policy boundaries, not installation requirements.
CurseForge identifies Tebex as a partner for private-server storefronts. If you sell access or cosmetic benefits, treat commerce as a separate operator task from installing a mod, and make sure the offer complies with the EULA and the rights attached to every asset in the package.

- Confirm the package supports your Hytale server version and list its dependencies.
- Back up the world and stop the server cleanly.
- Choose global or world-local scope deliberately.
- For an asset pack, verify a zip or folder with a root-level

The reliable installation sequence
For most Hytale servers, the dependable process is: match versions and dependencies, stop and back up, copy the package into the correct global or world-local mods directory, enable it in New World Options, restart, and use the server log to confirm loading. Asset packs provide content changes; plugins provide Java-based behavior. Because the architecture is server-side first, players normally only need to connect to the configured server—not reproduce its Mods folder on their own machines.
