If you mean installing mods in GTA V on a Windows PC, the steps depend on whether the mod changes game archives or adds scripts. Check the mod’s own instructions and make sure it supports your GTA V PC edition—Enhanced or Legacy—and current game build before installing. If you mean a different GTA game or a console, these PC steps do not apply.
Before installing, identify your game and mod
Confirm that you have GTA V for Windows PC and note whether you use the Enhanced or Legacy edition. Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.73 notes list updates for both PC editions; a game update can affect whether a mod or its dependencies still work.

Read the mod’s installation instructions before downloading or copying files. There is no single folder or installer that applies to every GTA V mod: archive replacements and script mods use different workflows, and each mod may require specific dependencies.
- Archive or replacement-file mod: changes files inside game archives; OpenIV’s
modsfolder workflow is designed for this type of edit. - Script mod: runs through a script loader or other framework. Some scripts require Script Hook V, while others may require additional components.
Use the mod author’s stated requirements and destination paths. The modcommunity GTA V installation guide gives general dependency context, but a community guide is not a substitute for the instructions and compatibility information for the specific mod you downloaded.

Install archive edits with OpenIV’s mods folder workflow
For archive edits covered by its documentation, OpenIV recommends keeping changes in a mods folder rather than editing the original archive directly. Its guide describes installing ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI, then making the change in the corresponding archive inside mods. Follow the mod author’s archive path and instructions; not every mod uses the same archive or files.
- Install and open OpenIV, selecting the GTA V installation that matches your edition.
- Follow OpenIV’s instructions to install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI, if the mod’s workflow requires them.
- Create or use the
modsfolder as described in the OpenIV mods-folder guide. - Copy the required original archive into the matching location in
modswhen instructed, then apply the mod’s changes to that copy. - Use the mod author’s instructions to verify the destination and launch the game in Story Mode.
Keeping edits in a separate copy makes it simpler to undo an archive change than overwriting the original game file.

Install script mods using only their stated dependencies
Script mods do not necessarily use OpenIV’s archive workflow. A script that depends on Script Hook V may require its files in the GTA V game directory, but that is not a universal instruction for all mods. Check the mod’s current instructions for the loader, any additional framework, exact destination, supported edition, and supported game build before copying files.
Check compatibility after GTA V updates
Rockstar’s update notes distinguish PC Enhanced and Legacy, and a mod or loader may not support both editions or the latest build. Before troubleshooting a failed launch or a mod that no longer works, compare the game edition and build with the mod and dependency pages. Do not assume that an older tutorial or download remains compatible after a game update.

Keep mods out of GTA Online
Install and use mods in Story Mode, not GTA Online. Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ says its anti-cheat monitors and prohibits cheating software and manipulation of protected code in GTA Online; it also notes that some graphics tools can cause technical issues. Rockstar’s Single-Player or Story Mode mods policy guidance points readers to its Terms of Service, Creator Platform License Agreement, and Mod Guidelines. Review those current policies rather than assuming a particular mod is permitted online.
