What you need to check before installing
A mod can be perfectly copied into the right directory and still fail if it targets a different game build, expects another mod, changes the save in a way that needs a new world, or requires files on each player’s computer. Read the mod’s installation notes before touching the server.

A community dedicated-server guide describes matching mod and game versions as necessary for players to connect.
- Server-only or client-required: Determine whether the mod changes server rules and XML only, or adds client-side icons, models, sounds, asset bundles, code, or other files.
- Dependencies: Install any framework or prerequisite mods in the order specified by the publisher.
- Anti-cheat requirement: Some code or gameplay modifications require Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) to be disabled; many XML-only mods do not.
- World and save impact: Check whether the author recommends a fresh world. Back up the server save before installing a mod that adds blocks, items, quests, terrain, or other persistent data.
Server-only mods versus mods players must install
The installation location is the same basic place, but the distribution requirement differs. Use the following as a planning guide, then follow the specific mod’s instructions.
| Mod type | Server installation | Client installation | Typical issue if clients lack files |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server-only administration or rule changes | Required | Usually not required | Players can normally connect, but the server feature is unavailable to them if its commands or permissions are not used correctly. |
| XML-only gameplay changes | Required | Often not required; XML can be delivered by the server | A client may see a missing or inconsistent feature if the mod also includes unannounced assets. |
| New items, icons, models, sounds, or asset bundles | Required | Every player installs the same mod version | Missing icons, invisible objects, errors while joining, or a failed feature in-game. |
| Code or gameplay mods with an EAC requirement | Required; server setting may need changing | Matching client files and EAC setting may be required | Connection rejection or the mod being blocked when EAC remains enabled. |
Do not infer client requirements from the word “modlet” alone. Confirm what the publisher says the mod contains and whether its release notes call for a client copy.

Where the server mod goes
The official 7 Days to Die wiki identifies the game installation’s Mods directory as the root location and requires ModInfo.xml for recognition. On a dedicated server, open the server’s installation root—the directory containing the dedicated server files—not a random world-save or configuration directory.
- Open the dedicated server installation directory.
- Look for a folder named
Mods. - If it is absent, create a folder named exactly
Mods, with that capitalization. - Inside the downloaded archive, locate the mod’s top-level folder. It must contain
ModInfo.xmldirectly or at the level documented by the publisher. - Copy that complete folder into the server’s
Modsfolder.
The resulting layout should look like this:
DedicatedServerRoot/
└── Mods/
└── ExampleMod/
├── ModInfo.xml
└── (the mod's other files)
Do not put the ZIP file itself in Mods. Do not create an unnecessary second directory layer such as Mods/ExampleMod/ExampleMod/ModInfo.xml; the server may then fail to recognize the mod.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep-by-step: install a modlet on a dedicated server
- Read the publisher’s requirements. Record the supported game build, dependencies, client requirement, EAC requirement, and any warning about existing saves or fresh worlds.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the control panel’s stop action or the normal shutdown procedure. Installing while files are being written can leave an incomplete copy or a locked file.
- Back up the save. Make a separate copy of the server’s world and player data before a major mod change. Keep the backup outside the live server directory so a rollback cannot overwrite it.
- Download the archive from the mod publisher. Keep the original archive until the installation has been verified; it makes it easier to reinstall the same version.
- Extract outside the live server directory. Unpack the archive to a temporary location. This prevents an archive tool from creating confusing nested folders inside the server.
- Inspect the extracted files. Find the mod folder that contains
ModInfo.xml. If you see another archive, a documentation folder, or a wrapper directory first, open the folders until you reach the actual mod folder. - Copy the mod folder into
Mods. Put the folder itself directly under the server’sModsdirectory. Copy dependencies as separate sibling folders unless the publisher specifies a different layout. - Start the server and read the log. Look for the mod’s load message, its name, and any dependency, XML, or assembly error. A clean startup does not prove every feature works, so continue with an in-game test.
- Connect and test the documented feature. Use a controlled area or test character where possible. Check the exact command, item, block, quest, or setting the mod is supposed to add.
The official modlet guidance and the Nexus Mods installation guide describe the same core process: extract the archive, place the folder directly in Mods, restart, and verify the server log.

Installing required files on players’ computers
If the mod contains client assets or the publisher explicitly says it is client-required, every player must install the same release in the Mods folder of their own game installation. The server copy does not automatically provide local icons, models, sounds, or asset bundles.
- Have each player obtain the identical mod version and any listed dependencies.
- Use the game launcher’s Open game folder option to locate that player’s game installation.
- Create the client-side
Modsfolder if necessary. - Extract the archive outside the game directory and copy the folder containing
ModInfo.xmldirectly into the client’sModsfolder. - Confirm that the client folder name and contents match the server copy, then launch the game and connect.
XML changes may be delivered by the server, but that does not remove the need for local asset files. When a mod combines XML with custom icons or bundles, install it on both server and clients exactly as the publisher describes.
Restarting and confirming that the mod loaded
Always restart after adding, updating, or removing a mod. During startup, inspect the server log for a line identifying the mod as loaded. Also watch for errors mentioning:

- an XML parse failure;
- an assembly, code, or asset load failure; and
- duplicate mod or conflicting content warnings.
After the log check, join with a test client and exercise the mod’s documented feature. A server can report a folder during startup while a particular item, quest, or asset still fails when used.
Do you need to disable EAC?
EAC is mod-specific. Do not disable it automatically. The mod’s own requirements take precedence.
When EAC may need to be disabled
Some code-based or gameplay modifications require the server configuration setting EACEnabled=false and require clients to launch with EAC disabled as well. If the publisher states this requirement, apply it consistently to the server and every participating client before connecting.

When to leave EAC enabled
Many XML-only mods do not require EAC changes. Leave the setting at its existing value unless the mod documentation identifies a conflict. Changing it without a reason can alter how clients launch and may prevent players using a different EAC state from joining.

How to resolve an EAC mismatch
- Stop the server and check the mod’s requirements again.
- Confirm the server’s EAC setting and the launch choice used by clients.
- Make the required state consistent for all players.
- Restart the server and test with one client before inviting the entire group.
Choosing a mod without risking the existing world
Before deployment, compare mods on the properties that affect operation rather than download popularity. The following checklist captures the decisions that matter on a dedicated server.
| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Supported game version | The exact game or server build listed by the publisher | A version mismatch can prevent loading or stop clients connecting. |
| Server-only versus client-required | Whether each player must copy the mod | Missing client files can produce connection errors or incomplete content. |
| XML-only versus assets or code | Presence of icons, bundles, assemblies, models, sounds, or scripts | Assets and code are more likely to require client files or an EAC change. |
| EAC requirement | Whether the publisher requires EACEnabled=false |
An inconsistent EAC state can block connections. |
| Save and world impact | Whether existing worlds are supported and whether a fresh world is recommended | Persistent blocks, items, quests, or terrain can leave data behind after removal. |
| Update cadence | Recent maintenance and notes for the current game build | An unmaintained mod may break after a game update. |
If the publisher does not state whether an existing save is safe, treat a major content mod as a change requiring a backup and a test world. Do not assume removing the folder will remove data already written to a save.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshooting: why a mod is not loading
The server ignores the mod
- Confirm the folder is in the dedicated installation root’s
Modsdirectory, not only in the client’s directory or a save folder. - Open the folder and verify that
ModInfo.xmlis present at the expected level. - Remove the ZIP from consideration and check for an extra nested directory.
- Restart the server after correcting the layout, then inspect the startup log.
The log reports an XML or dependency error
- Recheck the mod’s supported game version and required dependencies.
- Install each dependency as its own correctly named folder unless the publisher documents a combined package.
- Compare the downloaded archive with the publisher’s release notes; a partial extraction can omit required files.
- Temporarily remove the new mod and test a clean startup to distinguish its error from an older mod’s error.
Players cannot connect after installation
- Confirm that the server build, client build, and mod build are aligned.
- Determine whether the mod requires client installation and have every player install the same version.
- Check the EAC requirement and make the server and client launch state consistent.
- Test with one client after stopping other variables from changing.
The mod loads but content is missing
- Install the mod on the client if it adds icons, models, sounds, asset bundles, or other local content.
- Check that the client folder is not nested differently from the server folder.
- Verify that all players have the same release and dependencies.
The problem began after an update
Stop the server, record the current mod version, and read the publisher’s change notes. A game update can invalidate an older mod even when the folder layout is correct. Revert to the last known-good mod version only if it supports the current game build; otherwise remove it and run a controlled vanilla test.
Isolating a fault with a vanilla test
The official 7 Days to Die Help Center warns that third-party mods can be unstable and that its support team cannot diagnose a particular mod. The fastest isolation method is to compare the modded server with a clean launch.
- Stop the server and back up the current save and configuration.
- Move or rename the newly installed mod folder so it is no longer under
Mods. Renaming preserves the files for inspection while preventing the server from loading them. - If several mods were changed, restore the last known-good set or remove the newest change first.
- Start the server with a vanilla
Modsdirectory and reproduce the same action. - If the fault disappears, reintroduce mods one at a time, restarting and testing after each change.
For a client-side test, use the launcher’s Open game folder path and temporarily move the client mod folder out of Mods. This distinguishes a server problem from a local asset or client-mod problem.
Updating, removing, and rolling back safely
Updating a mod
- Read the new release notes for game-version, dependency, EAC, client, and save requirements.
- Stop the server and make a fresh save backup.
- Remove the old mod folder rather than merging unknown files into it.
- Extract the new archive outside the server directory and copy its complete folder into
Mods. - Update client installations when the mod requires them.
- Restart, inspect the log, and test the feature before allowing normal play.
Removing a mod
Stop the server, move the mod folder out of Mods, restart, and test with the affected save. Removing a folder prevents future loading but may not undo blocks, items, quests, or other data already stored in the world. Restore the backup if the save behaves incorrectly and the publisher’s instructions do not provide a safe removal procedure.
Returning to a known-good state
Keep the previous archive and its dependency versions until the replacement has been verified. If the update fails, stop the server, restore the previous folder and client version that match the current game build, then restore the save backup only when the mod change has already altered persistent data.
When managed hosting is the practical option
Self-hosting requires file-upload access, permission to create the Mods directory, log access, and the ability to stop and restart the process. A managed 7 Days to Die server can be useful when a provider supplies those controls through a panel, but verify current mod support, backup behavior, server geography, restart access, and pricing before committing. The same compatibility, client-file, EAC, and save-backup checks still apply.
Quick Recap
Installation checklist
- Game, dedicated-server, client, and mod versions match.
- The mod’s documentation identifies whether it is server-only or client-required.
- The archive was extracted outside the live server directory.
- The folder containing
ModInfo.xmlis directly inside the server’sModsfolder. - The ZIP was not placed in
Mods, and there is no extra nested folder. - Dependencies and EAC settings match the publisher’s requirements.
- The server save was backed up before a major content change.
- Every required client has the same mod version and folder structure.
- The server was restarted, the log was checked, and the feature was tested in-game.
