Install the dedicated-server files with Steam or SteamCMD, launch the server once without mods, then add a dedicated-server mod platform such as ModAPI outside the Steam installation. Test one server-compatible mod at a time, back up saves and configuration before every change, and verify compatibility again after each game update.

What the process involves
A modded The Forest dedicated server has three separate layers: the Steam-distributed server files, the server’s own configuration and save data, and a mod platform that can load packages in a headless server process. Keeping those layers separate makes updates and recovery much easier.

- Install the dedicated-server application with Steam’s Tools library or SteamCMD.
- Start it once in an unmodded state so it creates its folders and initial files.
- Configure the server through
Server.cfgand, where needed, command-line arguments. - Install the ModAPI dedicated-server package in a separate directory, enable only packages that explicitly support dedicated servers, and restart.
- Back up the save and configuration, add one mod, inspect the logs, and only then continue with another.
Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the standard distribution path: “All Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update game server files.” The Windows setup guide used for this procedure identifies the dedicated-server app as 556450.
Choose where the server will run
You can run the server on your own Windows machine or rent managed infrastructure. The installation steps are similar, but the operational responsibilities are not.

For a home server, use a machine that can remain online and that you can administer. For a rented instance, confirm that you receive file access, can run SteamCMD or the provider’s equivalent update process, and are allowed to install server-side mods. A current hosting guide documents SteamCMD-based deployment and server-token configuration for browser listing, but the exact panel controls vary by provider.
Install The Forest Dedicated Server files
Steam Tools library
In the Steam desktop client, open the Library, change the filter to show Tools, locate The Forest Dedicated Server, and install it into a directory reserved for the server. Do not mix the dedicated-server directory with a normal client installation or with a ModAPI working copy. A separate location simplifies backups and prevents an update or file replacement from affecting the wrong installation.

SteamCMD
SteamCMD is useful on a headless machine and for repeatable maintenance. Create or select the server’s installation directory, start SteamCMD, and run the command shown by the Windows setup guide:
+app_update 556450 validate +quit
The validate option checks the downloaded files; +quit closes SteamCMD after the update. Run the command again during a planned maintenance window when you need to update the server. Keep the installation directory, save directory and configuration location recorded in your maintenance notes so that a later ModAPI installation does not point at the wrong copy.
Confirm the download before proceeding
- Check that the dedicated-server executable and supporting files exist in the directory you selected.
- Confirm that SteamCMD completed without an error before attempting to add mods.
- Record the date and the game build shown by your update process; mod compatibility is tied to the installed build, not merely to the mod’s name.
Run the server once without mods
Launch the dedicated-server executable before installing ModAPI or any gameplay package. The first run creates the save, configuration and log folders that later tools need. Starting with a clean server also gives you a known baseline: if an error appears after a mod is added, you can distinguish it from a missing-folder or first-run problem.

For unattended Windows operation, the setup guide shows the launch flags -batchmode -nographics -nosteamclient. Use them only with the dedicated-server executable and preserve the command in a script or shortcut so every restart uses the same arguments. Leave the process running long enough to finish initialization, then stop it cleanly. A forced termination during the first save or configuration write can leave incomplete files.
What to capture from the first run
- The exact server directory and any newly created save and configuration paths.
- The initial log file and the timestamp of a clean startup and shutdown.
- The current values in
Server.cfg, if the file was created automatically. - The launch command, including any flags that are not stored in the configuration file.
Configure the server and network
Server.cfg and command-line settings
Use Server.cfg for persistent server settings and command-line arguments for values that must be supplied at launch. The documented behavior is that command-line values can override values in the configuration file. Keep a single written record of which setting is authoritative; otherwise, changing Server.cfg may appear to do nothing when an old launch argument is still winning.
After editing the configuration, stop and restart the server rather than assuming a live process has re-read the file. Make a copy of the working configuration before experimenting with unfamiliar settings, and change one group of related values at a time so that a connection problem can be traced.
Documented ports
The Windows setup material documents three ports. Treat these as the defaults to verify against your current server build and provider instructions:

Opening a port in Windows while leaving the router closed will not make a home server reachable from the internet. The reverse is also true. Only expose the ports your configuration and provider require, and apply the same protocol and port values on the firewall, router and server settings. If players can connect locally but not from another network, test the external address, router forwarding and firewall rules before changing mods.

Install the ModAPI dedicated-server platform
Use the dedicated-server package
The ModAPI site provides a package specifically for The Forest Dedicated Server. Download the package intended for the server rather than assuming that a package for the regular game client will work. Extract it outside the Steam game folder. Keeping ModAPI in its own directory protects the Steam-managed files and makes it possible to remove or replace the mod platform without reinstalling the server.
Start ModAPI.exe from that extracted directory. Point it at the dedicated-server installation when the program asks for the target, then enable the server mods you have chosen. Keep version 1 and version 2 installations separate; do not merge their files or alternate between them in one directory. Treat each installation as an independent test environment with its own backup.
Dedicated-server utilities listed by ModAPI
The catalog currently identifies server-oriented utilities including:
- Command Console
- Players List
- Ban List
- Log Viewer
- WhiteList
- Auto Restart/Shutdown
These names describe the catalog entries, not a guarantee that every utility works with every server build. Read each package’s notes, required version and installation instructions in ModAPI before enabling it.

Before ModAPI writes files, duplicate the clean dedicated-server directory or create a restorable archive of the executable, configuration and save data. A clean copy lets you determine whether a failure comes from the game update, ModAPI itself or a specific package. It also gives you a fast rollback path when a server must return online.

Check mod compatibility before installing
There is no authoritative universal compatibility matrix for The Forest dedicated-server mods. Compatibility must be checked for each package against the server build you actually installed.

Do not infer server support from a mod’s popularity or from a successful client installation. A dedicated server has no rendered game client and may not expose the hooks that a client-only mod expects.
Add mods one at a time
Use this sequence for every package, including utilities:
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not copy files into a running process.
- Back up the save and configuration. Include
Server.cfg, launch scripts, and the current logs. Give the backup a date and identify the server build. - Read the package notes. Confirm dedicated-server support, required dependencies, supported build and any known conflicts.
- Enable only that package in ModAPI. Leave every other optional mod disabled for this test.
- Start the server with the normal launch command. Keep the same batch and graphics flags you used for the clean baseline.
- Inspect startup logs. Look for the package loading message, dependency errors, exceptions, repeated restarts or a failure before the server announces readiness.
- Connect with a test player. Check the feature the package is supposed to provide, then disconnect and reconnect to ensure it survives a second session.
- Stop the server and record the result. Note the package version, game build, configuration changes and any warnings.
- Only then add the next package. If the server fails, the last change is your first suspect.
A one-mod-at-a-time process takes longer initially but prevents a stack of mutually incompatible packages from turning one startup error into an untraceable repair job.

A process that remains open is not necessarily a healthy server. Verify all of the following after each installation:

- The startup log reaches the normal ready state without an exception loop.
- The server appears to the intended players or can be joined directly through the configured endpoint.
- The mod’s documented feature is visible in the appropriate console, player list, ban list, whitelist, log viewer or restart behavior.
- A normal stop and restart load the same configuration and save.
- The save remains readable after a player joins, performs a small action and disconnects.
If a utility changes administrative behavior, test it with a non-owner account as well as the administrator account. For an auto-restart feature, schedule a controlled test rather than waiting for a crash; confirm that the process stops, starts and returns to the expected port without creating a second server instance.
Update Steam files without losing the mod setup
SteamCMD updates can change the game build that a mod depends on. Plan updates as maintenance, not as an unattended file download.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the current saves,
Server.cfg, launch scripts and logs to a dated backup location. - Preserve a record of the installed game build and every enabled ModAPI package and version.
- Run
+app_update 556450 validate +quitthrough SteamCMD. - Start the server without adding or changing mods and inspect the clean startup logs.
- Check each ModAPI package against the new build and its release notes. Do not assume that a package that worked yesterday still works after the update.
- Re-enable packages one at a time, using the same test and log review as the initial installation.
If the updated server fails, remove the most recently added or updated mod first and return to the clean server files. Restore the last known-good save and configuration backup only after stopping the process. Keep the failed logs with the backup; they can identify whether the problem is a missing dependency, an incompatible build or a damaged file.
Troubleshoot common failures

Before the first public session
- Dedicated-server files installed in their own directory.
- One clean unmodded launch completed.
- Save and configuration backups stored outside the live directory.
- Ports

- Version 1 and version 2 ModAPI installations kept separate.
- Every enabled package explicitly checked for dedicated-server support and build compatibility.
- One successful startup, player connection and clean shutdown recorded for each package.
For every maintenance window
- Stop the server cleanly and back up saves, configuration and launch scripts.
- Record the current game build and mod versions.
- Update with SteamCMD, then test the unmodded server.
- Revalidate packages individually and inspect logs before reopening the server.
- Keep the previous known-good backup until the updated server has survived a real player session.
Which approach is right for you?
Self-hosting is the better fit when you need direct filesystem control, custom launch arguments and unrestricted access to logs and saves, and you are comfortable maintaining Windows, SteamCMD, backups and network forwarding. Managed hosting is attractive when you prefer a reachable endpoint and provider-maintained hardware, but you must confirm that the panel permits the ModAPI workflow, gives you the necessary files and supports restoring saves and configuration. Neither option removes the need to verify mod compatibility after a game update.
The dependable pattern is the same in both environments: establish a clean server, preserve backups, change one variable at a time, and treat every game or mod update as a compatibility test rather than a routine click.
