To install mods on Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2, install the Forge 1.12.2 client, put compatible mod JAR files in the mods folder for the game directory your Forge profile uses, then launch that profile. A mod made for another Minecraft version or a different loader may not work.
Before you start
This guide is for Minecraft: Java Edition on desktop. Bedrock add-ons use a different process. Minecraft 1.12.2 is in the Java 8 range identified by the Forge support FAQ.
- Use a Forge installer and mods that explicitly support Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Check each mod’s page for required libraries or other dependencies.
- Close the Minecraft Launcher before running the Forge installer.
Install the Forge 1.12.2 client
- Download the Forge installer for the 1.12.2 build you intend to use from the official Forge files site.
- Run the installer, select Install client, and confirm. Reopen the Minecraft Launcher when installation finishes.
- Select the Forge installation in the launcher. Installing Forge does not make a vanilla launch load Forge or its mods.
If the installer JAR will not open, check that Java is installed. On Windows, a JAR file-association issue may prevent it from launching; Forge’s support FAQ discusses Jarfix and starting the JAR from the command line as possible workarounds.
Choose the game directory for this Forge profile
The Minecraft Launcher profile uses a game directory to store files such as saves, configuration, and mods. Forge recommends using a separate directory for each modded setup so its files stay apart from vanilla or other versions. If you configure a dedicated Game Directory, use that directory—not the default folder—for the next steps.

#1 Best Overall
| Setup | Advantage | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Default shared directory | Fewer settings to change. | Use the default Minecraft folder if the Forge profile has not been assigned a custom Game Directory. |
| Dedicated directory | Keeps this setup’s mods, saves, and configuration separate. | Find the path assigned to the Forge profile and put the mods folder there. |
On a standard Windows installation, the default folder is normally %APPDATA%.minecraft. On macOS, it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. A custom Game Directory or third-party launcher can use a different location.
Add compatible mod files
- Download each mod release that supports both Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge. Do not assume a Fabric mod, a mod for another Minecraft release, or a release requiring a different Forge build will work.
- Read the mod author’s installation notes and identify any required dependencies. Download compatible versions of those libraries as well.
- In the active game directory, create a folder named
modsif it does not already exist. - Place the downloaded mod
.jarfiles in thatmodsfolder. Keep them as JAR files; do not extract them unless the mod’s instructions specifically say otherwise.
Launch Forge and confirm the mods loaded
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the Forge 1.12.2 installation.
- Press Play and let the game start.
- Look for a Mods button on the main menu; the CurseForge manual installation guide identifies it as a sign that the modded game loaded.
Fix common installation problems
Forge starts, but the Mods button or a mod is missing
- Confirm you launched the Forge profile, not a vanilla profile.
- Check that the JAR is inside the
modsfolder for the active Game Directory. A second.minecraftfolder or custom directory can make it easy to put files in the wrong place. - Verify the mod supports Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge, and install any dependency required by its author.
The Forge installer or game fails to start
For Minecraft 1.12.2, check that the setup is using Java 8, as specified in Forge’s support guidance for Minecraft 1.16.5 and older. If the game crashes before you add any mods, also check graphics drivers. Forge recommends including the debug log and crash report when seeking support.
The game crashes after adding mods
Remove the most recently added mods or add them back in small groups to narrow down a conflict or incompatible dependency. Review the latest log or crash report for clues, then check each affected mod’s installation notes and supported versions.
Does the Forge build number change the basic steps?
For an ordinary client installation, use the Forge installer and follow the instructions for the exact build you selected. A separate note in Technic’s modpack packaging instructions says builds 14.23.5.2851 and above use its newer installer method, while builds at or below that threshold follow its older 1.12.1 workflow. That distinction is for Technic packaging; it is not a reason to apply those packaging steps to every manual client install.

Where to get help
Minecraft Support states that it cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage because modding is not officially supported. For a mod-specific problem, consult the mod author or relevant Forge community channels. When asking for help, include the Forge build, the mod list, and the relevant log or crash report.
