Install Multicraft as two connected components: a web panel and a daemon. The panel runs behind a web server with PHP and the required extensions; the daemon launches and controls Minecraft servers, which require Java. On Linux, download the Multicraft archive, run setup.sh as root, complete the browser installer, start the daemon, remove install.php, and then create your Minecraft server from the panel.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This guide covers a single VPS installation first, then explains MySQL, remote databases, multiple daemons, automatic startup, and the log checks that resolve most “panel cannot find daemon” problems.

What Multicraft installs on your VPS
Multicraft is not one executable. A working installation has a control panel and at least one daemon.
The web panel
The panel is the browser interface used to download Minecraft server files, create instances, start or stop them, manage users, and view server output. It needs a web server that can run PHP 5.4 or newer and the following PHP extensions:

The panel also needs a database. SQLite is the default option described by the installation documentation. MySQL is preferable when the panel and daemon need to use a database on another machine or when several daemons will share one database.
The Multicraft daemon
The daemon is the service process that actually controls Minecraft server processes. It stores its settings in multicraft.conf and normally writes multicraft.log beside that file. The daemon itself has no external software requirement, but every Minecraft server it launches needs Java. The Java executable must be installed and accessible to the operating-system user that runs the Minecraft server.

The panel records daemon and server information in the configured database. When you click a control in the panel, the daemon uses that information to operate the corresponding Minecraft process. If the panel and daemon use different database settings, different daemon passwords, or incompatible daemon IDs, the panel may show a daemon as offline even when the process is running.

Requirements to check before installation
| Component | Requirement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux VPS | You have root or equivalent superuser access for the setup script and service installation. |
| Web server | A web server capable of running PHP | The panel will be reachable at a URL such as http://your.address/multicraft/. |
| PHP | PHP 5.4 or newer | All six required extensions are enabled: pdo_mysql, pdo_sqlite, curl, xml, gd, and ftp. |
| Database | At least one available database | SQLite can use a local file; MySQL can be local or remote. The documentation says two databases are ideal when separating panel and daemon data. |
| Java | Required for Minecraft | The Minecraft service user can execute Java, not merely the root user. |
| Network access | Web access to the panel and database access where applicable | For MySQL, the default port is 3306 unless your connection string specifies another port. |
| License | A valid Multicraft license for the features you intend to use | A Dynamic deployment also requires daemon IDs supported by that license. |
Do not size the VPS from a player-count formula
The official installation material does not publish a CPU, RAM, storage, or player-capacity benchmark. Choose resources according to the Minecraft version, mod or plugin load, world size, concurrent players, and the results of your own monitoring. Leave headroom for the operating system, the panel, database activity, backups, and world saves rather than treating a published player number as a guarantee.
Prepare the VPS
- Install and configure the web stack. Set up your web server and PHP version, then enable every extension in the requirements table. Confirm that the web document root is known before running Multicraft’s setup script.
- Prepare Java for the Minecraft user. Install the Java version required by the Minecraft version you plan to run. Test it as the same non-root user that will own the Minecraft files;
java -versionshould return a version instead of “command not found.” - Decide on the database. SQLite is simplest for a self-contained installation. Select MySQL if the database must be remote, shared by multiple daemons, or protected from direct file access by the web user.
- Reserve a hostname or address. You will use the VPS address to open the browser installer and later to connect players to Minecraft.
- Back up existing data. If this VPS already hosts a panel or Minecraft worlds, choose a separate installation directory and verify backups before changing services or database settings.
Install Multicraft on Linux
The official Linux workflow downloads the archive, extracts it, and runs the setup script with superuser privileges. The following commands use the documented 64-bit archive URL and version.
- Download the archive. As root, run:
wget http://www.multicraft.org/download/linux64?version=2.5.0 -O multicraft.tar.gz - Extract it.
tar xvzf multicraft.tar.gz - Enter the extracted directory.
cd multicraft - Run the setup script.
./setup.sh
The script asks for the values needed for your installation. It can create the requested server user, create the base directory, copy the bin and jar directories, create multicraft.key when a license is supplied, write multicraft.conf, copy the panel into the web root, set ownership, and run set_permissions. Read each prompt instead of accepting a path that does not match your web root or Minecraft user.

Choose the installation paths carefully
The daemon command in the documentation uses /home/minecraft/multicraft/bin/multicraft. If you select another user or base directory during setup, replace that path in every later command and in the systemd unit. A path mismatch is a common reason for a service that appears enabled but cannot start.
Complete the browser installer
After the script finishes, open:
http://your.address/multicraft/
Follow the front-end installer to connect the panel to SQLite or MySQL and finish the initial configuration. If the page reports a missing PHP extension, stop and correct the web server’s PHP configuration before continuing; installing the panel with an incomplete PHP environment produces avoidable database and file-transfer errors later.
Secure the fresh installation immediately
- Remove the installer. Once the panel works, delete
install.phpfrom the panel directory. The official documentation explicitly requires this for security. - Change the default administrator password. Sign in with the initial
adminaccount, open Users, and replace the default password with a unique, strong password. - Protect database credentials. Keep the database username, password, and daemon password out of publicly served directories and restrict file permissions to the accounts that need them.
- Restrict MySQL exposure. If MySQL is remote, permit connections only from the panel and daemon hosts. Do not expose port 3306 broadly when a firewall rule can limit the source addresses.
- Use a strong daemon password. The daemon password is shared between the daemon configuration and the panel configuration; treat it as a service credential, not as a player password.
Start the Multicraft daemon
Start the daemon manually after the browser installer has completed and the configuration file is in place:

/home/minecraft/multicraft/bin/multicraft start
Adjust the path if setup created the installation elsewhere. Confirm that the process starts under the intended service user and inspect multicraft.log next to multicraft.conf if it exits immediately. A running daemon alone is not enough: the panel must use the same database details and daemon password.

The official Linux method installs a systemd unit and enables it at boot:
- Download the service unit to systemd’s unit directory:
wget http://www.multicraft.org/files/multicraft.service -O /etc/systemd/system/multicraft.service - Set the documented file mode:
chmod 644 /etc/systemd/system/multicraft.service - Enable the service:
systemctl enable multicraft
Enabling a unit schedules it for future boots; it does not by itself prove that the daemon can start successfully right now. Start it manually with the configured path first, then reboot during a maintenance window and verify that the daemon reconnects to the panel. If the unit points to a different installation directory or user than setup.sh created, edit the deployment to make those values consistent.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Download Minecraft and create your first server
Do not copy an arbitrary Minecraft JAR into a server directory and expect the panel’s metadata to match it. Use the panel’s built-in workflow:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Sign in to the panel with your changed administrator account.
- Open Settings → Update Minecraft and use the available download/update controls to obtain the Minecraft version you intend to run.
- Open Servers → Create Server.
- Assign the server to the correct daemon, choose its name and directory, and save the server record.
- Use the server controls to start it, then watch the console and log output for the first world-generation run.
Before inviting players, accept Minecraft’s license prompt where applicable, set the server properties you need, and confirm that the Java process is running as the Minecraft user rather than as root.
Choose between SQLite and MySQL
| Choice | Best fit | Important behavior | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQLite | A single VPS with a local panel and daemon | The panel reads and writes a database file on the VPS. | The panel user must be able to access the database file; moving the database to another machine is not the intended model. |
| MySQL | Remote databases, separated panel and daemon hosts, or shared multi-daemon deployments | The panel and daemon connect over the network using database credentials and a connection string. | Requires database service availability, firewall rules, credentials, and network troubleshooting. |
The installation documentation says at least one database must be available and notes that two are ideal when planning separate panel and daemon databases. Follow the database layout that matches your isolation and backup requirements rather than creating extra databases without a reason.
Configure a remote MySQL database
- Create the database and account on the MySQL host, granting access from the panel and daemon addresses.
- Set the same host, database name, username, password, and port details in
multicraft.confand in the panel’s configuration. - Use port 3306 unless your MySQL service listens elsewhere; the port can be changed in the connection string.
- Ensure the MySQL server accepts remote connections and that firewalls allow only the required hosts.
- Set an identical daemon password in the daemon and panel configuration. A database connection can succeed while daemon authentication still fails if these values differ.
- Restart or reload the affected services after changing configuration, then check both logs.
Run multiple daemons on different machines
A Dynamic license allows one Multicraft control panel to manage Minecraft instances distributed across multiple physical or virtual machines. The panel discovers those daemons through a shared MySQL database.
Deployment requirements
- Each daemon host can reach the shared MySQL server.
- The panel uses the same shared database and can reach it reliably.
- Every daemon has the same expected database credentials and daemon password in its local configuration and the panel.
- Every daemon has a unique
idinmulticraft.conf. Never clone a configuration with the same ID onto two hosts. - The active license supports the Dynamic deployment and the daemon IDs you assign.
A safe rollout order
- Bring up one daemon and verify that the panel detects it.
- Record its ID and host in your deployment notes.
- Copy the general configuration to the next host, then change its
id, host-specific paths, and service-user settings before starting it. - Confirm that the second daemon appears separately in the panel instead of replacing or merging with the first.
- Create a test Minecraft server on each daemon and verify that start, stop, console, and file operations reach the intended machine.
Troubleshoot a daemon the panel cannot find
Work from the component that is failing instead of changing several settings at once. The daemon log is normally multicraft.log beside multicraft.conf. The panel log is protected/runtime/application.log under the panel installation.
| Symptom | Likely checks | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Daemon process exits immediately | Read multicraft.log; verify the configured paths, ownership, and license file. |
Correct the path or permissions and restart using the installation’s actual daemon path. |
| Panel shows no daemon | Compare database host, database name, credentials, and port in the panel and daemon settings. | Make both components use the same database and ensure the database accepts the connection. |
| Authentication or password error | Compare the daemon password character for character in both configurations. | Set one strong value in both places, then restart the daemon. |
| Linux server will not start | Run Java as the Minecraft service user and inspect the server output. | Install the required Java runtime and make it available in that user’s PATH or configured Java path. |
| Two hosts appear as one daemon | Check the id value in each multicraft.conf. |
Assign a unique ID to every daemon in a Dynamic deployment. |
| Dynamic daemon is rejected | Check whether the license is active and whether it supports the daemon IDs and Dynamic arrangement. | Correct the license or deployment scope before troubleshooting network details further. |
| Panel installer cannot connect to SQLite | Check the database file path and ownership. | Give the panel user access to the file without making the entire web root writable. |
| Remote MySQL times out | Test DNS or address resolution, firewall rules, MySQL bind and grant settings, and the configured port. | Allow the panel and daemon hosts explicitly and use the actual MySQL port in the connection string. |
Read the logs in the right order
- Check whether the daemon process exists and whether its configured service user owns the installation.
- Read
multicraft.logfor database, license, password, ID, or path errors. - Read
protected/runtime/application.logfor panel-side connection and authentication errors. - Fix one reported cause, restart the daemon, and refresh the panel before making another change.
- For a Minecraft-only failure, test Java and the Minecraft server log separately from panel connectivity.
Post-installation checklist
- The browser installer completes at
http://your.address/multicraft/. install.phphas been deleted.- The default
adminpassword has been changed under Users. - The daemon starts with the installation’s actual path.
- The systemd unit is enabled and points to the same user and directory.
- The panel and daemon share the intended database settings.
- The daemon password matches in both configurations.
- Java runs successfully as the Minecraft service user.
- Each Dynamic daemon has a unique ID and a license that supports it.
- A test server can be downloaded, created, started, stopped, and located on the expected VPS.
- Database, panel, daemon, and world data are included in your backup plan.
When this installation model is the right fit
A single VPS using SQLite is the shortest path to a working panel and daemon. Move to MySQL when the panel and daemon must be separated, when database file access is undesirable, or when several daemon hosts need one shared data store. Use a Dynamic deployment only after the single-daemon configuration is reliable, because every additional host introduces database reachability, unique-ID, license, and path-consistency checks.
