Install phpBB on a VPS by preparing a supported PHP web stack, creating a dedicated SQL database and user, uploading the complete phpBB release, running /install/, removing the installer, and then securing the web server. The exact PHP range depends on the release: phpBB 3.3.x supports PHP 7.2.0 through 8.3, while phpBB 4.0.x requires PHP 8.2.0 through 8.5. Choose the release first and follow that release’s requirements page rather than mixing commands or assumptions.

1. Choose the phpBB release and VPS architecture
Download a specific phpBB release before provisioning the server. The installer checks your runtime, database connection and filesystem, so the PHP version installed on the VPS must match that release.

| Release line | PHP requirement | Database engines listed as supported | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| phpBB 3.3.x | PHP 7.2.0 or newer through PHP 8.3 | MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle | Use the 3.3.x requirements page for the exact point release and extensions. |
| phpBB 4.0.x | PHP 8.2.0 through PHP 8.5 | Use the 4.0.x requirements page for the current database floors and drivers. | Install only the PHP and database versions stated for the 4.0.x release you downloaded. |
Apache is the least complicated first deployment because phpBB documents Apache protections and PHP integration directly. nginx works as well, but you must configure FastCGI/PHP handling and explicit deny rules yourself. A normal Ubuntu VPS with a domain or test hostname, SSH access, a database service and a supported PHP package is sufficient; no special hardware figure or forum-capacity guarantee is implied.
2. Complete the preflight checklist
- Confirm that you can log in to the VPS over SSH with a sudo-capable account.
- Point a domain or test hostname at the VPS address, or be prepared to use the server address temporarily.
- Patch Ubuntu before installing application software.
- Decide whether Apache or nginx will own ports 80 and 443. Do not run two independent web servers on the same port.
- Record the phpBB release, PHP version, database engine, database host and port, database name, database username and password.
- Plan HTTPS, SSH restrictions, backups and a recovery test before opening the board to the public.
3. Install Apache, PHP and a database on Ubuntu
Update the operating system
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
Reboot if the kernel or other core services were upgraded, then reconnect over SSH.
#1 Best Overall
Install the Apache stack
On Ubuntu, the following installs Apache, MariaDB, PHP, the Apache PHP module, the MySQL PHP driver and commonly required extensions. Package names can differ between Ubuntu releases, so resolve any unavailable package through the distribution’s supported package set.
sudo apt install apache2 mariadb-server php libapache2-mod-php php-mysql php-mbstring php-xml php-gd php-curl php-zip unzip -y
sudo a2enmod rewrite
sudo systemctl enable --now apache2 mariadb
For PostgreSQL, install the PostgreSQL server and the matching PHP driver instead of php-mysql; for another supported engine, use its documented PHP driver. Do not install a driver for a different database and then select that engine in the installer.
Verify the runtime before uploading phpBB
php -v
php -m | grep -E 'json|mbstring|xml'
php -r 'var_dump(function_exists("getimagesize"));'
sudo systemctl status apache2 --no-pager
sudo systemctl status mariadb --no-pager
The phpBB 3.3.x requirements include json, mbstring, XML support and getimagesize(). JSON is built into many current PHP builds, but the requirements screen is authoritative. If the command prints bool(false) for getimagesize(), install or enable the PHP image extension supplied by your Ubuntu release, restart Apache and test again. A phpBB 4.0.x installation must pass the requirements for that release, even if a 3.3.x server would accept the same package.
4. Create a dedicated database and user
Use a separate database and least-privilege account for each board. The installer asks for the database type, host, port, name, username and password, so keep these values together in a password manager. The example below generates a random password in the shell instead of putting a real credential in your command history.
Rank #2
DB_PASS=$(openssl rand -base64 36)
sudo mariadb <<SQL
CREATE DATABASE phpbb CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'phpbbuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '${DB_PASS}';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON phpbb.* TO 'phpbbuser'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
SQL
printf '%sn' "$DB_PASS"
Store the printed value securely and clear the shell variable when it is no longer needed. If your database service is on another private host, replace localhost with the permitted source address, use the correct port, restrict firewall access to the web server and never expose the database port to the public internet unless there is a documented reason.
The database account needs full privileges on the phpBB database so the installer and later migrations can create and alter the board’s tables; it does not need administrative privileges over other databases. If you choose PostgreSQL or another supported engine, create an equivalent database and owner using that engine’s tools and note its connection syntax.

Transfer the archive
Download the archive for the exact release from the official phpBB downloads page on a trusted workstation. Keep the archive’s directory structure intact; do not copy only selected PHP files or omit vendor libraries, styles, language files or extensions.
scp phpBB-3.3.x.zip [email protected]:/tmp/
The filename above represents the release archive you downloaded. Substitute its actual filename, then connect to the VPS and inspect the archive before extraction.
Rank #3
ssh [email protected]
unzip -l /tmp/phpBB-3.3.x.zip | head
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/phpbb
sudo unzip /tmp/phpBB-3.3.x.zip -d /tmp/phpbb-release
sudo find /tmp/phpbb-release -maxdepth 2 -type f -name index.php -print
phpBB archives commonly contain a top-level directory. Copy the contents of that directory, rather than creating an extra nested path that would make the board appear at an unexpected URL.
sudo rsync -a /tmp/phpbb-release/phpBB3/ /var/www/phpbb/
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/phpbb
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;
If your archive uses a different top-level directory name, use the name shown by find. The document root in this example is /var/www/phpbb; the board will therefore be served from the root of the configured virtual host.

Create a site definition that points at the phpBB directory, enables URL rewriting and allows the application’s distributed access files to work.
sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/phpbb.conf
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName forum.example
DocumentRoot /var/www/phpbb
<Directory /var/www/phpbb>

CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/phpbb-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>
sudo a2ensite phpbb.conf
sudo a2dissite 000-default.conf
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
Replace the example hostname with the DNS name you actually control. Add HTTPS before public launch; until then, treat the HTTP endpoint as a temporary setup path and do not send administrator credentials over an untrusted network.
6. Run the phpBB web installer
- Open
https://forum.example/install/, or use the equivalent path if phpBB is installed below a subdirectory. - Read the first page, which is the requirements list. It checks PHP features, the database driver, writable paths and other prerequisites. Resolve every failure before continuing.
- Select Install and enter the database type, host, port, database name, username and password created earlier. For a local MariaDB service, the host is usually
localhostand the default port can remain unchanged. - Enter the first administrator’s username, password and email address. Use a unique password that is not reused for SSH, the VPS provider or the database.
- Leave advanced settings at their defaults unless you have a specific requirement. They can be changed from the Administration Control Panel after the board is working.
- Allow phpBB to create
config.php. If filesystem permissions prevent that, the installer provides the generated file for download; place it at the forum root exactly as instructed, verify its ownership and permissions, and reload the installer. - Wait for the success page, then open the board and sign in with the new administrator account.
Do not reload repeatedly while a database migration or configuration write is in progress. If the requirements page refuses to continue, fix the named PHP module, database connection or path permission and run the check again rather than bypassing it.
7. Remove the installer and restore restrictive permissions
After a successful installation, remove the install/ directory. The official documentation notes that the Administration Control Panel remains restricted while that directory is present; leaving it online also exposes an unnecessary setup endpoint.
sudo rm -rf /var/www/phpbb/install
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/phpbb
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;
sudo find /var/www/phpbb -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;
sudo chmod 640 /var/www/phpbb/config.php
During installation, only the paths named by the requirements screen should receive temporary write access. Restore normal ownership and modes afterward. Do not make the entire document root world-writable and do not solve a failed write by granting permanent 777 permissions.
8. Deny direct access to sensitive directories
phpBB identifies cache/, files/, includes/, phpbb/, store/ and vendor/ as directories that should not be browsable directly. The supplied Apache protections normally handle this when AllowOverride All is enabled. You can also enforce the policy in the virtual host:
Best Value
<DirectoryMatch "^/var/www/phpbb/(cache|files|includes|phpbb|store|vendor)(/|$)">
Require all denied
</DirectoryMatch>
Test this carefully after enabling it. phpBB serves attachments and cached resources through its application; a direct-deny response for a sensitive directory is expected, but normal board pages, uploads and downloads must still work. nginx has no Apache .htaccess processing, so an nginx deployment needs equivalent location-level deny rules plus a correctly scoped PHP-FPM configuration. Do not copy an Apache configuration into nginx.
9. Enable HTTPS and restrict the VPS
- Install a certificate for the real hostname and redirect HTTP to HTTPS before inviting users.
- Permit SSH only for the accounts and source networks that need it. Disable password login after confirming key-based access and keep a tested emergency console path.
- Allow inbound HTTP and HTTPS, and restrict SSH in the VPS firewall. Keep MariaDB or another database bound to the private interface unless remote administration is genuinely required.
- Do not place database credentials in a public file, a web-accessible directory or a command copied into a shared support ticket.
- Keep Ubuntu, PHP, Apache or nginx, the database and phpBB updated on a planned schedule.
10. Validate the finished board
Perform these checks from a normal browser and from the server before announcing the forum.
- Open the board homepage, register or log in with a test account and confirm that sessions persist over HTTPS.
- In the Administration Control Panel, create a test forum and assign an administrator-only permission. Verify that an ordinary account cannot see or administer it.
- Upload an allowed attachment and download it as an authorized user. Confirm that the upload path does not expose a directory listing.
- Configure outbound email and send a test notification. If it fails, inspect the mail settings and the server’s PHP or MTA logs rather than weakening authentication.
- Request a known-sensitive path such as
/vendor/or/includes/. It should return an access denial, not a file listing or source code. - Inspect Apache and PHP error logs, then check disk space, memory pressure and failed-login records.
These are operational acceptance checks, not a substitute for the requirements screen. A board that loads can still be misconfigured if HTTPS, permissions, backups or directory restrictions are missing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Protect a public phpBB board from spam
Public forums attract automated registrations and posts soon after launch. Enable a current CAPTCHA or other anti-spam method, require email confirmation where appropriate, give moderators only the permissions they need and review the account-approval workflow. Add rate limiting at the edge or web server, monitor failed logins and keep extensions current. Anti-spam controls should be tested with a normal user account so that they do not block legitimate registration, password resets or moderator actions.
12. Backups, updates and recovery
What to back up
- A complete database dump, including the phpBB database and its character-set information.
config.php, while protecting it as a secret.- The
files/directory and other user-uploaded images or attachments. - Installed extensions, custom styles and any local language or configuration changes.
- The web-server configuration and TLS renewal configuration when those are maintained on the VPS.
Store at least one backup away from the VPS and periodically perform a restore to a separate test location. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apply phpBB updates safely
- Schedule maintenance and record the current phpBB, PHP and database versions.
- Take the full database and file backup listed above.
- Read the release-specific update instructions and verify that the target PHP range is available on the VPS.
- Replace or update the phpBB source files, preserving
config.php, uploads, extensions and custom styles as the instructions require. - Run the documented web updater or CLI migration for that release. Do not run only the database updater.
- Open the board, check the Administration Control Panel, test a login and an upload, inspect logs and remove
install/again if the update recreated it.
phpBB explicitly warns that source files must be updated even when the database updater has been run. Keeping only the database schema current can leave executable files inconsistent with it.
Quick Recap
13. Troubleshoot common installation failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
Requirements page reports missing mbstring or XML |
The PHP extension is absent or Apache is using a different PHP build. | Install the matching Ubuntu package, restart Apache and compare php -m with the web server’s PHP information. |
getimagesize() is unavailable |
The image-related PHP extension is not enabled. | Install or enable the distribution package that supplies it, restart Apache and rerun the check. |
| Database connection refused | Wrong engine, host, port, credentials or database service state. | Check systemctl status mariadb, verify the installer fields and test the account locally without exposing the database port. |
phpBB cannot write config.php |
The web user lacks temporary write access. | Grant only the required temporary permission, use the installer’s download-and-place method if offered, then restore restrictive ownership and modes. |
| Apache returns 403 for ordinary pages | A deny rule is too broad or the document-root permissions are wrong. | Review the virtual host, .htaccess files and directory ownership; restrict only the named sensitive directories. |
| Installer appears again after completion | The install/ directory was not removed or was restored by an update. |
Confirm the board works, remove that directory and reload the Administration Control Panel. |
| Uploads fail after hardening | The upload path is not writable by the web user, or a deny rule blocks the application’s expected handling. | Check the requirements-listed writable path, ownership and error log; do not make the whole site writable. |
14. Choose between deployment approaches
| Decision | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Apache versus nginx | Apache is simpler for a first phpBB deployment and can use the protections shipped with the package. nginx can be a good fit when you already operate it. | nginx requires explicit FastCGI, PHP-FPM and directory-deny configuration; neither option has a performance result established here. |
| MariaDB/MySQL versus PostgreSQL or SQLite | MariaDB/MySQL follows the most familiar LAMP path and has straightforward dump tooling. Other engines are listed as supported for applicable releases. | Driver installation, backup commands and operational practices differ. Select an engine supported by your exact phpBB release and expected forum workload. |
| Manual installation versus a managed image | Manual deployment makes the PHP version, source files, permissions, updates and backups visible and controllable. | A managed image can reduce initial configuration but may hide package versions and create a maintenance dependency. You still own updates, security and recovery. |
| Command line versus a VPS control panel | Command-line setup is transparent and reproducible. A control panel can simplify DNS, TLS and service administration. | Panels add another software layer and may change file ownership or PHP settings. Confirm the resulting configuration against phpBB’s requirements. |
15. Final go-live checklist
- The downloaded release and its PHP/database requirements are recorded.
- The board loads over HTTPS and HTTP redirects to HTTPS.
- The database uses a dedicated account and is not publicly reachable.
- The requirements screen passes,
config.phpis protected andinstall/is gone. - Sensitive directories deny direct access without breaking normal pages or uploads.
- An administrator login, ordinary-user permission, upload and email notification have been tested.
- Anti-spam controls, rate limits, updates and failed-login monitoring are enabled.
- Database, files, extensions, styles and server configuration are backed up, and a restore has been rehearsed.
