To install Counter-Strike 2 server plugins, install Metamod:Source first, add its SearchPaths entry to gameinfo.gi, restart, then install CounterStrikeSharp using its with-runtime package. Put compatible plugin folders in game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins, restart again, and verify with meta list and css_plugins list. A managed host can automate the framework installation, but you still need to upload compatible plugin files and restart the server.

What you need before installing
Counter-Strike 2 does not load community plugins through the ordinary Steam game client. Plugins run on a dedicated server through a server-side framework. CounterStrikeSharp uses Metamod:Source as its primary way to communicate with the game server, so both frameworks are required.

- Permission to stop and restart the server.
- A current Metamod:Source 2.x build suitable for Counter-Strike 2.
- A CounterStrikeSharp release that supports your current CS2 server build. For a first installation, use the CounterStrikeSharp with-runtime package.
- The plugin release files, including any documented dependencies and configuration files.
- On Windows, the Visual Studio Redistributables required by CounterStrikeSharp. On Linux, the system libraries required by the selected .NET runtime; some installations need the distribution’s

Back up the server’s configuration and existing gameinfo.gi before changing anything. Stop the server before copying framework or plugin files. Keeping a copy of the previous framework and plugin directories gives you a rollback path if a game update or incompatible release prevents startup.
Choose self-hosting or a managed panel
The files and verification commands are the same in principle, but the amount of administrative work differs.

If you need full control over startup arguments, files and logs, self-hosting is the more flexible route. If you prefer not to edit server files, a managed panel can remove the framework setup, but panel labels and supported versions can change and should be checked in the provider’s current documentation.
Self-hosted installation: complete procedure
1. Stop the server and identify the CS2 game directory
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before modifying it. Locate the directory that contains the game folder. The paths used below are relative to that server root:

<server>/game/csgo/On a normal installation, this directory already contains the CS2 files and gameinfo.gi. Do not copy files into the Steam client installation by mistake; use the dedicated server’s own game/csgo directory.
2. Install Metamod:Source
Download a current Metamod:Source 2.x build intended for CS2. Extract the package while preserving its directory structure. Copy the package’s addons directory into:
<server>/game/csgo/After extraction, the Metamod files should be under a path equivalent to:
<server>/game/csgo/addons/metamod/A common mistake is ending up with an extra nested directory such as game/csgo/addons/addons/metamod or game/csgo/addons/metamod/metamod. Open the folder and confirm that the expected Metamod files and VDF files are directly inside the intended directories.
3. Add Metamod to gameinfo.gi
Open:
<server>/game/csgo/gameinfo.giFind the SearchPaths section. Add this line directly beneath the existing Game_LowViolence csgo_lv entry:

Game csgo/addons/metamodKeep the syntax and placement intact. Do not remove the existing search paths, change the file extension, or add the line to a similarly named file in another directory. Save the file and start the server.
4. Confirm that Metamod loaded
Open the dedicated server console and run:
meta listA working installation recognizes the command and displays the loaded Metamod information. If the console reports that meta is unknown, stop the server and check all three prerequisites:
- The Metamod
addonsdirectory is inside the server’sgame/csgodirectory. - The Metamod VDF files were copied with the rest of the package and are not one directory too deep.
gameinfo.gicontainsGame csgo/addons/metamoddirectly beneathGame_LowViolence csgo_lv.
Do not proceed to plugin troubleshooting until meta list works. CounterStrikeSharp depends on Metamod, so a broken Metamod installation prevents the rest of the stack from loading.

5. Install CounterStrikeSharp
Download the CounterStrikeSharp release that matches your server environment. For the first installation, use the package explicitly labeled with-runtime; the project documentation requires this variant for a first-time setup because it includes the .NET runtime. Extract its addons directory into:
<server>/game/csgo/The resulting installation should include a directory similar to:
<server>/game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/Inside it, a normal package includes folders such as api, bin, dotnet, plugins and gamedata. If those folders are hidden one level deeper, move the contents so that counterstrikesharp itself is directly under addons.
On Windows, install the Visual Studio Redistributables required by the CounterStrikeSharp project before starting the server. On Linux, install any runtime libraries required by your distribution. A missing ICU library is a known reason for .NET-based components to fail to start; install the distribution’s ICU/libicu package when the server log identifies it as missing.

Start or restart the server, then run:
meta listCounterStrikeSharp should now appear as a loaded Metamod plugin. If Metamod is listed but CounterStrikeSharp is not, inspect the server log for a missing runtime, operating-system dependency, incorrect folder nesting or a build that does not support the current CS2 version.
6. Install a plugin or mod
Choose a plugin release that explicitly supports your current CS2 and CounterStrikeSharp versions. A plugin compiled for an older game update or a different framework build may be present on disk but fail to load.
Preserve the release’s folder structure when copying it. The plugin directory belongs here:
<server>/game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins/For example, if a release contains a folder named AutoMapChanger, copy that complete folder into plugins, rather than copying only an individual DLL into the parent directory. Follow the plugin author’s instructions for additional dependencies, configuration files or required game-data files.
Start or restart the server after uploading the plugin. In the server console, run:
css_plugins listThe command lists active CounterStrikeSharp plugins. If your plugin is listed, the framework has discovered and loaded it. Use the plugin’s own documented commands or configuration instructions to verify its behavior in-game.
Managed-panel installation
A managed host can automate the Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp file installation. The exact labels differ between providers, so treat the following as the documented workflow for a panel that exposes these controls rather than as a universal interface.

- Stop the CS2 server from the panel.
- Open Config.
- Set Enable Metamod & CounterStrikeSharp to
true. - Save the configuration and start the server. The panel installs the necessary framework files according to the provider’s supported version.
- Open Files and upload the complete plugin folder to
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins. - Restart the server.
- Open the panel console and run
css_plugins listto verify the plugin.
Panel automation does not remove compatibility work. Confirm that the provider’s CS2 image, CounterStrikeSharp build and plugin release are compatible, and keep a copy of plugin configuration before replacing files. If the panel does not expose a console, use its log viewer to check whether the framework and plugin loaded.
How to verify the full installation
Use this order so that each layer is tested before the next one:
- Start the server and confirm it reaches a normal running state.
- Run
meta list. Metamod must be recognized. - Run
meta listagain after CounterStrikeSharp installation and confirm CounterStrikeSharp appears. - Run
css_plugins listafter copying each plugin and confirm the plugin is active. - Join the server and test the plugin’s documented command or feature.
- Review the server log for warnings, missing dependencies, rejected game data or load errors even when the plugin appears in the list.
Testing one plugin at a time makes failures attributable. If several plugins are copied together and the server stops loading, temporarily remove the newest plugin, restart, and add them back individually.

The meta command is unknown
This indicates that Metamod did not load. Verify the exact server root, the game/csgo/addons/metamod directory, the Metamod VDF files and the SearchPaths line in gameinfo.gi. Confirm the line is directly beneath Game_LowViolence csgo_lv, save the file, and perform a full server restart rather than only changing the map.

Check that the CounterStrikeSharp addons directory was merged into game/csgo, not placed beside the game directory. Confirm that you used the with-runtime package for a first installation, installed Windows redistributables where required, and installed Linux ICU/libicu when the log requests it. Then check the log for a framework build that is incompatible with the current CS2 update.
CounterStrikeSharp loads, but the plugin is missing from css_plugins list
Check the final path and folder nesting. The plugin must be beneath game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins, and the release’s expected files must remain together. Verify documented dependencies, spelling and capitalization on case-sensitive Linux filesystems, then restart. If the plugin still does not appear, inspect the server log for a rejected binary, missing game data or an unsupported framework version.
The plugin appears but its commands do not work
Read the plugin’s release instructions for permissions, configuration files and command names. A plugin can load while a required dependency, permission assignment or configuration value is absent. Check the plugin’s own error output and test with the appropriate administrator account; do not assume that a loaded entry means every feature is enabled.

The server stops starting after an update
CS2 updates can invalidate framework builds, game data or plugin binaries. Stop the server, preserve the current logs, and remove or roll back the most recently changed plugin first. Then check for a CounterStrikeSharp and Metamod release that supports the new game build. Add plugins back one at a time after the framework starts cleanly. Keep the previous working files until the updated combination has been tested.

CounterStrikeSharp updates
The CounterStrikeSharp guide describes upgrades as downloading the latest release and copying it over the existing installation. The upgrade process is designed not to overwrite configuration files, but a backup is still prudent. Stop the server, archive the current addons/counterstrikesharp directory and configuration, copy the new release over it, then restart and run meta list followed by css_plugins list.
Runtime maintenance
If you chose a package without an included runtime, you must keep the required .NET runtime current yourself. That adds a dependency which can break after an operating-system or framework change. For a first installation, the with-runtime package avoids that separate runtime installation step; advanced administrators may choose otherwise when they intentionally manage the host’s runtime.
Plugin updates
Read the plugin release notes before replacing files. Check its required CounterStrikeSharp API, game version, dependencies and configuration changes. Stop the server, back up the existing plugin folder and configuration, replace the files while preserving the expected layout, restart, and verify with css_plugins list. If the new release fails, restore the backed-up folder and restart before investigating further.
Server settings that are separate from plugin installation
A reachable and manageable server still needs ordinary dedicated-server configuration. Steam’s dedicated-server support describes controls such as network type, player limit, UDP port, RCON password and VAC. These settings determine how players connect and how administrators operate the server; they do not install Metamod, CounterStrikeSharp or any plugin.
- Choose a network type appropriate for where the server is hosted.
- Set the player limit and UDP port, and allow the port through the host firewall or router where applicable.
- Set a strong RCON password and keep it out of public configuration posts.
- Decide whether VAC should be enabled according to the server’s rules and community needs.
Configure and test these controls independently from the plugin stack. A server can be correctly configured for networking while having no plugin framework, or have a working framework while being unreachable because its port is blocked.
Compatibility checklist for every CS2 update
- Check the current CS2 server build and the release dates of Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp.
- Confirm whether the plugin author lists support for that CS2 and CounterStrikeSharp combination.
- Read release notes for changed APIs, game data, .NET requirements or configuration formats.
- Back up
gameinfo.gi, framework configuration and every plugin directory. - Update the framework before replacing a plugin when the framework release is required by the game update.
- Restart fully and run
meta listandcss_plugins list. - Test critical commands in-game before reopening the server to the public.
- Keep the last known-good files available for rollback.
Compatibility is a moving target: game updates, framework builds, .NET runtimes and individual plugins can change on different schedules. Treat a successful installation as a versioned combination, not as a permanent guarantee that every future update will load unchanged.
