Install Purpur by choosing the Minecraft version you want, downloading its matching Purpur JAR, installing the Java runtime required for that version, and launching the JAR from a dedicated server folder. Complete the first-run EULA setup, test locally, then configure plugins and network access. What Purpur is and why the installation approach matters
Purpur is a server implementation built as a drop-in replacement for Paper. Its purpose is to expose more configuration and optional gameplay features while retaining the upstream Paper feature set. If you leave purpur.yml unchanged, Purpur’s FAQ says running its JAR is no different from running Paper.

The important differences are version matching, Purpur’s additional configuration files, and the need to check plugin authors’ compatibility notes before enabling non-default features.
Check these requirements before downloading
- A fixed Minecraft version: Decide which release clients will use before downloading anything. A Purpur build is tied to a Minecraft version; do not choose a JAR first and try to fit the world around it.
- A compatible Java runtime: Install the Java major version required by the target Minecraft release, not simply the newest Java available.
- A dedicated folder: Keep the JAR, worlds, logs, configuration, plugins, and backups together in a location that is easy to reach from a terminal.
- Enough host memory: The sample command below reserves 4 GB, but that is an example rather than a universal requirement. Player count, world size, plugins, operating-system overhead, and other services determine the sensible heap size.
- A backup plan: Before a first migration, version change, or plugin experiment, make a copy of the world folders and configuration files.
1. Choose the Minecraft release and matching Purpur build
Write down the exact Minecraft version your players will run. Then select the Purpur build for that version from Purpur’s official download service. The documented latest-build endpoint follows this pattern:

For repeatable maintenance, record the version and build number in a notes file when you download it instead of relying only on a filename that may change later. The endpoint’s latest selector is convenient for a new installation, while a recorded build gives you a precise rollback point when updating.
Do not copy a world from one Minecraft version into another without a backup. World conversion can be one-way, and a failed upgrade is much easier to recover when the original directory is untouched.

2. Install the Java version required by your Minecraft version
Java compatibility is determined by the Minecraft release. PaperMC’s current requirements table lists the following guidance:

Older Minecraft releases use different Java versions, so consult the requirements for the specific release you selected rather than assuming Java 21 or Java 25 applies to every historical version.
After installing Java, verify that the command is available in the same account that will run the server. A terminal should recognize java; if it does not, install the runtime again or correct the operating system’s PATH configuration. If the server reports a class-version or unsupported-Java error, compare the installed major version with the Minecraft release table and switch to the required runtime.
3. Create a clean Purpur server directory
Create one folder exclusively for this server. A short path without confusing punctuation makes command-line work and backup scripts simpler. The folder will eventually contain files such as:

- the Purpur server JAR;
server.propertiesand the EULA file generated during first launch;- world directories, logs, and crash reports;
- Paper and Purpur configuration files; and
- the
pluginsdirectory and plugin data.
Download the selected JAR into this folder and rename it to a stable name such as purpur.jar. Keeping the filename stable means a start script does not need to change every time you install a new build. Preserve the original release and build information in a text file or backup folder so you can identify exactly what was running.
4. Launch Purpur from the server directory
Open a terminal in the directory containing purpur.jar. The documented Paper launch pattern works for Purpur when the filename is changed:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar purpur.jar --nogui-Xms4Gsets the initial Java heap size.-Xmx4Gsets the maximum heap size.-jar purpur.jartells Java which server file to execute.--noguidisables the Vanilla graphical interface, which is useful on a headless machine and leaves the console as the control surface.
The two 4 GB values are only a starting example. Allocate enough memory for the intended player count, world and plugin load, while leaving capacity for the operating system and other services. Giving the JVM all available RAM can make the host less stable even if the server itself appears to have more memory.
Once this command works, save it in a Windows batch file or a macOS/Linux shell script. Keep the script in the server folder and change the heap values only after observing the server’s workload and the host’s remaining memory.

On its first launch, Purpur creates the initial directory structure and configuration files, then follows the EULA setup process. Read the generated instructions, make the required EULA choice, and stop and restart the server as directed. Do not treat a server that has merely created files as fully configured: allow the first startup to finish, then stop it cleanly before making broad changes.
After the restart, inspect the console for startup errors. Confirm that the expected world directories, logs, server.properties, and configuration files exist. If you are migrating an existing world, stop the new server first, make a complete backup, and then copy the world into the server directory rather than overwriting files while the process is running.

6. Configure and test the server locally
Begin with a connection from the same machine or local network before opening the server to the Internet. This separates Minecraft and plugin problems from router and firewall problems.
Review the core server settings
- Set the server name and gameplay options in
server.properties. - Check operator permissions and grant operator status only to accounts that need administrative commands.
- Review view distance and simulation distance. These settings affect CPU and memory load, so raise them deliberately rather than assuming the largest value is best.
- Confirm world settings and the selected game mode before inviting players.
Test a local connection
- Start Purpur and wait until the console indicates that startup has completed.
- Use the host machine’s local connection option, or the host’s private LAN address from another device on the same network.
- Join with a client running the exact Minecraft version selected for the server.
- Walk through the world, place and break blocks, and check that the console remains free of repeating errors.
- Stop the server using its clean console stop command before editing files or taking a backup.
A successful local test confirms that Java, the JAR, the world, and the basic configuration work. It does not yet prove that players outside your network can connect.
7. Add plugins without creating avoidable incompatibilities
Purpur inherits Paper features by design. Purpur’s FAQ also says that Paper, Spigot, and CraftBukkit plugins generally work. Compatibility is not guaranteed, however: a plugin can fail when its author hard-codes support for a particular server implementation or ignores Paper and its forks.
Use a controlled plugin installation sequence
- Read the plugin’s documentation and confirm that its Minecraft version and supported server implementations include your target release.
- Stop Purpur cleanly before placing a plugin JAR in the
pluginsdirectory. - Add one plugin, start the server, and inspect the console for enable errors before adding another.
- Test the plugin’s commands and features in a disposable world or after taking a backup.
- Record the plugin version alongside the Purpur build so a later failure can be traced to a specific change.
Purpur-specific options are stored in its configuration files. Change one setting at a time, document what you changed, and restart when the setting requires a restart. Avoid using /reload as a plugin lifecycle strategy; a clean stop and start gives plugins a predictable initialization sequence and makes backups safer.
8. Let friends connect: LAN versus Internet access
Players on the same local network
LAN players connect to the host computer’s private address. Use the server’s local address rather than its public Internet address, and make sure the operating system firewall allows the Java server process to receive connections. The local test should work first; if it does not, fix the server or host firewall before changing router settings.
Players outside your home network
Internet players need more than a running Purpur process. You must allow the server through the host firewall, forward the Minecraft listening port from the router to the server machine, and give players a stable public address or DNS name. Router interfaces and firewall rules differ by operating system, router model, and network provider, so there is no single command that is correct for every setup.

Test from a different network, such as a phone connection, rather than testing only from inside the same LAN. Some routers do not support loopback connections, so an internal test of the public address can fail even when outside players can join. If inbound connections are impossible because of carrier-grade NAT or provider restrictions, a VPN-based connection is an alternative; all players then use the VPN network instead of a direct public port.
The Minecraft Wiki’s server tutorial covers LAN connection, port forwarding, VPN alternatives, and client connection details. Whichever method you use, share only the address and port players need, keep operator privileges restricted, and do not expose unrelated services on the host.
9. Back up and update Purpur safely
Updates affect the server JAR, plugins, configuration, and sometimes the world format. Use this sequence for every planned upgrade:
- Announce downtime and stop Purpur cleanly.
- Copy every world directory,
server.properties, Purpur and Paper configuration files, plugin data, and any scripts into a dated backup. - Record the current Purpur version, build, Java major version, and plugin versions.
- Choose the intended Minecraft version and download the matching Purpur build. The versioned Purpur API makes it possible to select a Minecraft version and, when needed, a reproducible build rather than downloading an unrelated release.
- Replace the JAR or place the new JAR beside the old one and update the start script to point to it.
- Read plugin release notes and remove or update plugins that do not support the new Minecraft or Purpur release.
- Start the server and watch the entire console for conversion notices, plugin errors, or repeated warnings.
- Connect locally, verify worlds and essential features, and only then reopen public access.
Keep the previous JAR and its matching backup until the new version has been exercised. If the upgrade fails, stop the server, restore the prior JAR and backup, and investigate from a known-good state instead of repeatedly launching a partially upgraded directory.

Java is missing or the wrong version is running
If the terminal cannot find java, install the required runtime or correct PATH settings. If Java starts but rejects the JAR with a class-version error, the installed major version does not match the Minecraft release. Recheck the Java table and run the server with the appropriate runtime.
The JAR cannot be found
A “file not found” startup failure usually means the terminal is in a different directory or the filename differs from the command. Open the terminal in the folder containing the JAR, list the filename, and make the command and actual filename identical. Renaming the file to purpur.jar avoids build-number typos.

The first launch stops before a server is available
Read the generated first-run instructions and complete the EULA step, then restart. Do not copy a configuration from another version until the clean first-run files have been created and backed up.
A plugin fails while Purpur itself starts
Separate server startup from plugin startup in the console. Check the plugin’s documented Minecraft and server support, then test with that plugin removed. Hard-coded CraftBukkit or Spigot assumptions can cause incompatibility even though most Paper, Spigot, and CraftBukkit plugins work on Purpur.
Local players can join but Internet players cannot
The server process is working; focus on the host firewall, router port forwarding, the destination machine’s private address, and whether the network provider blocks inbound connections. Test from an external network and verify that players are using the current public address or DNS name.
The server is lagging or the host runs out of memory
Do not assume that increasing -Xmx alone will solve performance problems. Check player count, world activity, plugin behavior, view distance, simulation distance, and memory left for the operating system. There is no universal Purpur RAM value; tune the heap and distances for the actual host and workload, then retest after each change.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running Purpur on your own computer gives you direct control, but it also makes you responsible for networking, backups, updates, and uptime. A managed host can reduce routine administration at the cost of less control over the machine and Java process. The relevant choice depends on who will operate the server, not on a single “best” hosting type.

A reliable operating routine
- Keep the launch command and the exact Purpur, Java, and plugin versions in a maintenance note.
- Back up before every version, plugin, or world change, and test that a backup can actually be restored.
- Use local testing for configuration changes before reopening the public endpoint.
- Change one major variable at a time so a plugin, heap, distance, or Purpur setting can be associated with its effect.
- Stop the server cleanly before copying worlds or configuration files.
- Review console output after every restart, especially after a Minecraft-version change.
With those controls in place, Purpur installation is straightforward: match the Minecraft and Java versions, launch the correct JAR from its own directory, establish a clean local server, and expose it to other players only after backups and compatibility checks are in place.
