To install Redis from source on Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble), install the compiler toolchain, download a tagged Redis source archive, compile it, verify the resulting binaries, and then choose whether to run it from the build directory or install it under /usr/local. A basic build needs only a C compiler and libc; TLS, modules, Rust-backed components, and systemd integration add packages and build options.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The procedure below keeps the source tree, configuration, data directory, and service definition under your control. That is the main benefit of a source build, but it also means you—not Ubuntu’s package manager—must track upgrades, permissions, paths, and service behavior.

What changes when Redis is built from source?
Ubuntu’s package-managed Redis installation normally supplies a distribution-selected version, files in distribution paths, and a ready-made systemd unit. A source build instead compiles the release and options you select. The resulting binaries are independent of the package-managed service unless you deliberately connect them.
Source installation is useful when you need a particular Redis release, a compile-time option, TLS support, or modules that are not present in the Ubuntu package. It is less convenient for routine security updates because APT will not update the binaries installed under /usr/local.

| Release control | Choose an exact tag and compile flags. | Choose from versions published for the configured repository. | Choose an image tag and its bundled build. |
| Updates | You download, rebuild, install, and roll back releases. | APT can manage updates and dependencies. | Replace the image and preserve external data. |
| Service integration | You create the account, directories, unit, and policy. | Usually supplied by the package. | Defined by the container runtime or orchestration system. |

| Operational ownership | Your team owns paths, permissions, logs, upgrades, and recovery. | Ubuntu’s package conventions do more of the work. | The image and host each own part of the lifecycle. |
Do not install a source-built daemon on the same port as an already-running package-managed Redis service. Decide which installation owns the port and data before starting the new process.
Before you begin
Confirm the operating system and architecture
Run:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
The commands in this guide target Ubuntu 24.04, whose codename is Noble. You need sudo access, working DNS and HTTPS access to download the archive, enough disk space for the source tree and build artifacts, and a compiler-capable machine. Building with all optional components consumes more time and storage than a core build.

Select a tagged release from the Redis source repository rather than compiling an untracked development branch. Record the tag, the archive URL, the compiler options, and the installation prefix in your change log. Those details make a later upgrade or rollback reproducible.
Install the Ubuntu build dependencies
Redis’s Noble procedure installs the following complete toolchain and optional-build prerequisites:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends
ca-certificates wget dpkg-dev gcc g++ libc6-dev libssl-dev make git cmake
python3 python3-pip python3-venv python3-dev unzip rsync clang automake autoconf libtool
The essential core path is smaller in principle: Redis documents no dependencies beyond a C compiler and libc. The longer command is appropriate when you want the Noble all-data-structures build, TLS, modules, auxiliary build tooling, or a repeatable environment that can build more than the minimum.
What the important packages provide
gcc,g++, andlibc6-devprovide the C/C++ compiler and development headers.makedrives the Redis build.libssl-devsupplies OpenSSL headers and libraries for TLS builds.git,cmake, Python tooling, Rust-toolchain support, and archive utilities support optional components and reproducible build workflows.ca-certificatesandwgetallow secure archive retrieval.
If you plan to compile Redis with systemd support, also install Ubuntu’s systemd development package before compiling:
sudo apt-get install -y libsystemd-dev
The systemd development library is not required merely to run redis-server from a shell. It is needed when you choose to build systemd notification or integration support.
Download and verify the Redis source
Fetch a tagged archive
Redis publishes release archives through its GitHub source repository. Replace <version> with the exact tag you selected:
cd /usr/src
wget -O redis-<version>.tar.gz https://github.com/redis/redis/archive/refs/tags/<version>.tar.gz
tar xvf redis-<version>.tar.gz
rm redis-<version>.tar.gz
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
The archive URL, shown literally, is https://github.com/redis/redis/archive/refs/tags/<version>.tar.gz. The extracted directory name normally follows the tag. If it differs, use the directory actually created by tar.
Check the archive before compiling
When possible, compare the downloaded archive with the digest published in Redis’s redis-hashes repository. A digest mismatch means you should stop, remove the file, and obtain the archive again; do not compile an unverified download. Keep the selected tag and the verified digest with your deployment records.
You can inspect the archive and resulting directory without changing anything:

The first command must be run before removing the tarball if you want to inspect the downloaded file. If you followed the procedure above and already removed it, inspect the extracted tree instead.
Compile the core Redis binaries
Minimal build
For a core build, enter the extracted source directory and run:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
make -j "$(nproc)"
$(nproc) lets GNU Make use the available processor count. On a small virtual machine, parallel compilation can consume substantial memory; replace it with a smaller number such as make -j2 if the host becomes memory constrained.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TLS-enabled build
The Ubuntu package command above installs libssl-dev. Compile TLS support with:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
make -j "$(nproc)" BUILD_TLS=yes
Without BUILD_TLS=yes, merely installing the OpenSSL development package does not add TLS support to the binaries. Treat the build option as part of the release record so an upgrade does not silently produce a different feature set.
Modules and the complete Noble example
Redis’s Ubuntu 24.04 example enables TLS, built-in module support, and installation of the Rust toolchain used by optional components:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
export BUILD_TLS=yes
export BUILD_WITH_MODULES=yes
export INSTALL_RUST_TOOLCHAIN=yes
make -j "$(nproc)" all
BUILD_WITH_MODULES=yes requests the module build path. INSTALL_RUST_TOOLCHAIN=yes allows the build to install the Rust toolchain when the selected source release needs it. This path is more expansive than the core build and can take longer; use it only when the resulting modules or data structures are required.

Building systemd support is separate from creating a unit file. Install libsystemd-dev, then use the systemd build option documented by the exact Redis release. Releases commonly expose that option as USE_SYSTEMD=yes:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
make -j "$(nproc)" USE_SYSTEMD=yes
Check the selected release’s README or Makefile for the accepted option name before relying on it. If the release does not support that spelling, use its documented equivalent. A binary compiled without systemd support can still be supervised by a systemd unit; the extra support affects integration behavior, not whether systemd can launch a process.
Verify the build before installing it
Run the binaries directly from the source tree:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
./src/redis-server --version
./src/redis-cli --version
Confirm that the displayed version is the tag you selected and that the expected feature information is present. Testing the source-tree binaries first avoids confusing a newly built executable with an older copy already in /usr/local/bin or another directory in PATH.

cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
./src/redis-server redis.conf
For releases before Redis 8.10, the Ubuntu 24.04 instructions say to specify redis-full.conf instead of redis.conf. Use the configuration filename shipped by the exact release you selected; do not copy a filename from a different release.
In another terminal on the same host, use the matching CLI:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
./src/redis-cli ping
A working local server returns PONG. Stop this foreground test with Ctrl-C before creating a production service. A successful ping proves local connectivity, not that your final configuration, persistence settings, permissions, TLS listener, or service restart behavior is correct.
Install the binaries under /usr/local
Use the default prefix
After verifying the source-tree binaries, install them with:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
sudo make install
The documented default destination is /usr/local/bin. Check what was installed:
/usr/local/bin/redis-server --version
/usr/local/bin/redis-cli --version
command -v redis-server
command -v redis-cli
The command -v output can still point elsewhere if another installation appears earlier in PATH. Use an absolute path in service files so the daemon cannot accidentally switch versions because of a changed environment.
Choose an explicit prefix
The Redis repository README also documents an explicit prefix:
cd /usr/src/redis-<version>
sudo make install PREFIX=/usr/local
Using an explicit prefix is helpful in deployment scripts because the destination is visible in the command. The README documents removal of files placed by that installation with:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo make uninstall PREFIX=/usr/local
Run uninstall only against the same source release and prefix that performed the installation. Record the source directory until you have completed an upgrade and rollback window.
Prepare a source-built Redis service
Why a unit file is required
Starting redis-server in a shell does not create an Ubuntu systemd service. A production service needs an explicit account, configuration path, data directory, ownership policy, restart behavior, and executable path. The package-managed unit at /lib/systemd/system/redis-server.service may assume different binaries, users, directories, and configuration locations; do not copy those assumptions without checking every path.
Create dedicated directories and an account
Choose paths that match your backup and monitoring standards. A conventional layout is:

sudo useradd --system --home /var/lib/redis --shell /usr/sbin/nologin redis
sudo install -d -o redis -g redis -m 0750 /var/lib/redis
sudo install -d -o root -g redis -m 0750 /etc/redis
sudo install -d -o redis -g redis -m 0750 /var/log/redis
If the redis account or directories already exist, inspect them instead of running these commands blindly. The important property is that the daemon does not need root privileges to write its data and logs.
Place and adapt the configuration
Copy the configuration file from the exact source release into your chosen configuration directory, then edit it for the data directory, logging method, bind addresses, port, persistence policy, authentication, and TLS settings you require. For a pre-8.10 release, the full configuration file is named redis-full.conf; newer releases use the filename supplied by that release’s tree.
Set ownership so the service account can read the configuration and write only the directories intended for Redis:
sudo install -o root -g redis -m 0640 /usr/src/redis-<version>/redis.conf /etc/redis/redis.conf
sudo chown redis:redis /var/lib/redis /var/log/redis
Adjust the source filename in the first command when your release supplies redis-full.conf or another configuration file. Review the copied file before starting the daemon; a sample configuration is not a substitute for production settings.
Create a unit with absolute paths
Create /etc/systemd/system/redis-source.service:
[Unit]
Description=Redis source build
After=network.target
[Service]
Type=notify
User=redis
Group=redis
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/redis-server /etc/redis/redis.conf
ExecStop=/usr/local/bin/redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1 shutdown
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=2
LimitNOFILE=65535
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This example assumes the installed binary is at /usr/local/bin/redis-server, the CLI is at /usr/local/bin/redis-cli, and the configuration is /etc/redis/redis.conf. Change every path to match your installation. Type=notify is appropriate only when the binary was built with systemd notification support; otherwise use a service type supported by the selected release and configuration, commonly Type=simple.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The shutdown command must match your authentication and TLS configuration. If the CLI cannot authenticate or connect over the configured transport, systemd may terminate the process after the stop timeout instead of performing a graceful shutdown. Test the stop path before enabling automatic startup.
Load, start, and inspect the service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now redis-source.service
sudo systemctl status redis-source.service
sudo journalctl -u redis-source.service -n 100 --no-pager
Then test the running service with the matching CLI and connection options. If it fails, inspect the journal first, then verify the executable path, configuration filename, account permissions, data directory ownership, port availability, and whether the selected Type= matches the build.
Avoid a package-service collision
Check for an existing unit before starting the source-built one:
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i redis
sudo ss -ltnp | grep 6379
If Ubuntu’s package-managed Redis service is active, decide whether to stop and disable it or use a different port and data directory. Do not disable a service you still need; first identify which process owns the existing data and listener.

Common failures and precise fixes
make reports a missing compiler or header
Re-run the dependency installation command and inspect the first missing file in the error output. A compiler failure is usually fixed by installing gcc, g++, or libc6-dev. TLS errors that mention OpenSSL headers generally indicate that libssl-dev is absent.
TLS was expected but is not present
Installing OpenSSL development files is not enough. Rebuild with BUILD_TLS=yes, then run ./src/redis-server --version from the rebuilt tree and keep the build command in your records.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The wrong configuration file is passed
Check the release version and the files in its source directory. For versions before Redis 8.10, use redis-full.conf for the full configuration instead of redis.conf. Do not assume a configuration filename from a newer release applies to an older archive.
The command launches an older Redis
Compare the absolute source-tree path, the installed path, and command -v redis-server. Shell command lookup can select a package binary even after make install. Use absolute paths in tests and systemd units.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorssystemd reports a start timeout
Inspect journalctl and compare the unit’s Type= with the binary’s systemd support. A unit using Type=notify needs a build that can send readiness notifications. Otherwise select the service type supported by your build and release, then reload the unit.
The service cannot write data or logs
Check ownership and mode bits on every parent directory, not only the final data directory. The account in User= must be able to read the configuration and write the configured persistence and log locations. Avoid solving this with a broadly writable filesystem; correct the path ownership instead.
The port is already occupied
Use ss -ltnp to identify the listener. Stop the conflicting service only after confirming what it is and where its data lives, or configure the source-built instance with a separate port and data directory.
Upgrade and rollback discipline
- Choose and record the new Redis tag, archive digest, compiler options, and prefix.
- Download and verify the new archive without deleting the old source tree.
- Compile and verify the new source-tree binaries before touching the running service.
- Install the new binaries into the selected prefix during a maintenance window.
- Review configuration compatibility and keep the existing data directory protected.
- Restart the deliberately named source-built unit and verify its version, logs, and connectivity.
- Retain the previous source tree and installation record until rollback is no longer required.
A source installation has no automatic relationship with APT upgrades. Treat the build command, source tag, configuration, unit file, and data backup as one deployable change.

- Ubuntu 24.04 Noble was confirmed.
- The exact Redis release tag and archive digest were recorded.
- The compiler and required development packages were installed.
- TLS and module flags were selected intentionally.
- The correct release-specific configuration filename was used.
redis-server --version,redis-cli --version, and a localPINGtest succeeded.- The installation prefix and source directory were recorded.
- A dedicated service account, configuration path, data directory, and permissions were created.
- The systemd unit uses absolute paths and a service type compatible with the build.
- No package-managed Redis service is unintentionally competing for the same port or data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compile Redis without installing every package in the Noble command?
Yes. Redis documents a core dependency set consisting of a C compiler and libc. The longer Ubuntu command supplies tools and development packages needed for TLS, modules, Rust-backed components, and a broader repeatable build.
Does sudo make install create a systemd service?
No. It installs binaries, normally under /usr/local/bin. You must create and enable a unit with paths, account, permissions, configuration, and restart behavior appropriate to your source installation.
Which configuration file should Redis 8-era releases use?
Use the file shipped by the selected release. The Noble instructions specifically say that releases before Redis 8.10 use redis-full.conf instead of redis.conf for the full build.
How do I remove a source installation?
From the same source tree and prefix used for installation, run sudo make uninstall PREFIX=/usr/local when that prefix was selected. Remove or disable the associated systemd unit separately, and preserve the data directory until you have confirmed that it is no longer needed.
