How to Install RocketModFix on an Unturned Server

Install the current RocketModFix continuation by stopping your Unturned server, placing the complete Rocket.Unturned module folder directly in the server’s Modules directory, and starting the server once to generate Rocket’s configuration and plugin folders. The original RocketMod project ended maintenance on December 20, 2019, so current installations should use RocketModFix (or an LDM-compatible continuation) rather than an obsolete package.

What you need before installing

RocketMod is a server-side plugin framework for Unturned. It does not install through the Steam Workshop. You must have a working Unturned dedicated server and permission to edit its files, either through a local file system, an FTP/SFTP account, or a hosting control panel.

  • Server access: You need the server’s root or managed-file area, including the Modules directory.
  • A full shutdown: Stop the server completely before replacing module files. Copying files while Unturned is running can leave a mixture of old and new assemblies in memory.
  • A compatible continuation: The original RocketMod maintainers discontinued the project on December 20, 2019. RocketModFix is a fork maintained by Unturned plugin developers and is intended to preserve compatibility with older Rocket plugins.
  • Battleye planning: The Unturned Wiki states that third-party modules cannot be loaded with BattlEye enabled. If your server requires BattlEye, verify the consequences for your server community before installing a third-party module.

On a managed Unturned server, look for an administrator-panel action labelled Install Rocketmod or a similar module installer. Panel labels and available versions vary by host, so use the provider’s documented path when it differs from the manual procedure below.

Choose between the standard module and Auto-Installer

RocketModFix provides two practical installation approaches. The standard module gives you explicit control over every file. The Auto-Installer is designed to replace or update Rocket automatically after a restart. RocketModFix documentation says, “We highly recommend to use Auto-Installer,” but the choice depends on how much control you need over updates and rollback.

Option What you copy Update behavior Best fit Rollback and control
Standard installation Rocket.Unturned into Modules You download and replace the module manually Operators who test versions, keep change records, or need predictable maintenance windows Highest file-level control; easiest to retain a known-good archive before changing versions
Auto-Installer Rocket.AutoInstaller into Modules RocketModFix can update itself after a restart Operators who prefer automatic replacement and fewer manual update steps Less hands-on control over when a new build is applied; preserve backups if you need a quick rollback

Do not install both module folders as competing implementations. Pick one method, remove stale copies of the other when necessary, and confirm the resulting folder name is exactly the one expected by the method you selected.

Install the standard Rocket.Unturned module

This procedure applies to a self-hosted server and to a managed server where you can upload files. The important detail is the final directory level: the complete Rocket.Unturned folder must sit directly under Modules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop Unturned completely. Use the server console or hosting panel’s stop command, then wait until the process and console session have exited. Do not replace module files during a live restart.
  2. Remove an old module directory if it exists. Delete Modules/Rocket.Unturned before installing the new copy. This prevents obsolete DLLs and configuration files from remaining beside the replacement. If you keep a backup, store it outside Modules and label its version.
  3. Download the current release asset. Open the RocketModFix releases page and download the asset named Rocket.Unturned.Module.zip. Use the release intended for your current Unturned server rather than an unrelated plugin archive.
  4. Extract the archive locally. After extraction, open the directory named Rocket.Unturned.Module. The folder you need to upload is inside it; do not upload the outer archive folder as the module name.
  5. Copy the complete module folder. Copy the entire Rocket.Unturned folder into the server’s Modules directory. The resulting layout should be Modules/Rocket.Unturned/, with Rocket’s module files immediately inside that folder. Copy the folder itself, not only the files inside it.
  6. Replace files when prompted. If your file manager asks whether to overwrite existing files, confirm replacement after verifying that the destination is the intended server. A nested or partially merged copy is a common reason for a module that appears installed but is not detected.
  7. Start the server and watch the console. Let the server complete a normal startup. Look for a module-load message or a Rocket entry in the server’s module list before attempting to use a plugin.

Correct and incorrect directory layouts

Layout Result
Modules/Rocket.Unturned/ Correct: the module folder is directly under Modules.
Modules/Rocket.Unturned.Module/Rocket.Unturned/ Incorrect: the extra extraction directory is one level too deep.
Modules/<files copied from Rocket.Unturned> Incorrect: the folder itself was not copied, so the module’s expected path is missing.

Install with Rocket.AutoInstaller

Use this route when you want RocketModFix to handle subsequent updates after a restart. It still requires a stopped server and the correct module level.

  1. Stop the Unturned server and wait for the process to exit.
  2. If an older installation is present, remove Modules/Rocket.Unturned or any obsolete Auto-Installer folder that could conflict with the new deployment. Keep backups outside Modules.
  3. Download Rocket.AutoInstaller.zip from the RocketModFix releases page.
  4. Extract the archive and locate the complete Rocket.AutoInstaller directory.
  5. Copy Rocket.AutoInstaller directly into Modules. The intended destination is Modules/Rocket.AutoInstaller/; do not leave it under an extra folder created by the archive utility.
  6. Start the server and allow a full restart. The project documents that this method can update Rocket automatically after a restart, so record the installed version if you need strict change control.

Automatic updating is convenient, but it can introduce a new build at the next restart without the manual file-replacement step. Keep a copy of the previously working module outside the server’s active Modules directory if your server requires rapid rollback.

First boot: generated Rocket files and folders

Rocket creates server-specific data only after the module has loaded successfully. Start the server once and allow the startup sequence to finish. Depending on the host’s storage speed and panel behavior, hosted documentation advises allowing at least one minute for the initial files to appear.

The generated location is:

Servers/<ServerID>/Rocket/

Inside that directory, Rocket should create configuration files including:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rocket.config.xml, which contains Rocket’s general server settings.
  • Permissions.config.xml, which stores permission groups and nodes.
  • Plugins/, the directory used for Rocket plugin DLLs.

Some managed hosts expose the same location as a host-specific Rocket/ path rather than showing the full local Servers/<ServerID> hierarchy. Use the path displayed by the panel, but preserve the same relationship: the plugin directory belongs inside Rocket’s generated server data, not inside Modules.

Install Rocket plugins in the right directory

Rocket itself is the module. Individual plugins are separate releases and must be installed after Rocket has generated its server folder.

  1. Download the plugin’s release archive from its author or distribution page.
  2. Extract the archive and read its included instructions for required dependencies and permission nodes.
  3. Copy the plugin DLL directly into Servers/<ServerID>/Rocket/Plugins/, or into the equivalent Rocket/Plugins/ path shown by your host.
  4. Copy any dependency files required by that plugin into the location specified by the plugin author. Do not assume every dependency belongs beside the plugin DLL.
  5. Check that the DLL is not still inside an extra directory. A path such as Rocket/Plugins/MyPlugin/MyPlugin.dll commonly prevents discovery when the plugin expects Rocket/Plugins/MyPlugin.dll.
  6. Open the permissions configuration and assign the plugin’s documented permission nodes to the appropriate groups before testing commands in game.
  7. Restart the server and inspect the console for the plugin’s load message or an explicit dependency, version, or permission error.

Why permissions matter

A plugin can load successfully while its commands remain unavailable to ordinary players. Loading and authorization are separate checks: the DLL must be discovered first, then the node listed by the plugin must be granted to a group in Rocket’s permissions configuration. Test with an account that belongs to the group you actually edited, rather than assuming administrator status on one account proves the configuration is correct.

Verify the installation before troubleshooting plugins

Run these checks in order. They distinguish a module deployment problem from a plugin-specific problem.

  • The server was fully stopped while module files were replaced.
  • Modules/Rocket.Unturned/ exists directly under Modules, or Modules/Rocket.AutoInstaller/ exists if you selected Auto-Installer.
  • The startup console or module list reports Rocket as loaded.
  • After the first successful boot, Servers/<ServerID>/Rocket/ exists.
  • Rocket.config.xml, Permissions.config.xml, and Plugins/ have appeared; allow at least one minute on a managed host before deciding generation failed.
  • Each plugin DLL is directly inside the active Rocket/Plugins/ directory.
  • Every required dependency supplied by the plugin author is present in its documented location.
  • The plugin’s permission nodes are assigned to the group used for testing.
  • BattlEye is not enabled in a way that blocks third-party module loading.

Troubleshoot a RocketMod installation that is not detected

No Rocket entry appears in the console

First stop the server again and inspect the path, not just the file names. The most frequent mistake is an extra extraction level such as Modules/Rocket.Unturned.Module/Rocket.Unturned. Move the complete Rocket.Unturned folder so it is directly under Modules. Remove stale copies, then perform a full stop and start rather than relying on a quick panel restart.

If the path is correct, confirm that you downloaded the module asset rather than a plugin archive, and that the archive was extracted completely. Review the startup console for a file-access, dependency, or assembly error; the first error in the sequence is usually more useful than later “plugin not found” messages.

The module folder exists but files appear unchanged

Stop the server, delete the old Modules/Rocket.Unturned directory, and copy a clean release again. A merge operation can leave DLLs from an older version beside new files. Preserve a backup outside Modules if you may need to roll back, but do not leave both versions active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rocket loads but no configuration files appear

Allow the initial startup to complete and wait at least one minute on a managed host. Then check the server-specific path, Servers/<ServerID>/Rocket/, rather than searching only beside the module. If the folder remains absent, inspect the console for write-permission errors and verify that the process is using the server instance whose files you are viewing; panels can expose multiple server IDs.

A plugin is not listed or does nothing

Confirm that the plugin DLL is directly inside Rocket/Plugins/, not inside a second folder. Verify every dependency named by the plugin author and check the console for a missing assembly or incompatible version. A plugin that loads but rejects a command usually needs its permission node assigned in the permissions configuration; reinstalling the DLL will not grant authorization.

Commands fail only when BattlEye is enabled

The Unturned Wiki documents that third-party modules cannot be loaded with BattlEye enabled. Treat this as a server-configuration constraint rather than a damaged Rocket installation. Decide whether your operating requirements allow the module and BattlEye settings to coexist, and explain the resulting security and gameplay trade-off to players before changing a public server.

Updating, backups, and rollback

Updating a standard installation

Schedule a maintenance window, stop the server, archive the currently working Modules/Rocket.Unturned folder outside the active server tree, and replace it with the new release’s complete folder. Start once and verify Rocket before updating plugins. Keeping the module and plugin backups separate makes it possible to identify whether a failure came from the framework update or a plugin update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updating Auto-Installer

Auto-Installer is intended to update Rocket after a restart. Record the date and resulting version in your server notes, then inspect the console after each restart. If a new build causes a failure, stop the server and restore the previously saved working Auto-Installer/module files according to the project’s release structure; never leave an experimental copy alongside the active folder.

Changing methods

Before moving from Standard to Auto-Installer, stop the server and remove the old active module directory. Install only the selected method, then perform a clean boot and confirm which module reports as loaded. Running both paths at once makes update behavior and error diagnosis ambiguous.

Using a managed Unturned server

A managed provider may offer an Install Rocketmod button that performs the module deployment for you. Use it only while the server is stopped if the panel does not stop it automatically, and verify the resulting module path through the file manager. After installation, wait for the first boot to generate Rocket’s files, then use the panel’s displayed Rocket/Plugins/ directory for plugin uploads.

Panel automation does not remove the need to check BattlEye compatibility, plugin permissions, nested extraction paths, or console errors. If the panel’s one-click action installs a different continuation or version than the one your plugin requires, ask the host which Rocket build was deployed before changing files manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational practices that prevent repeat failures

  • Keep the server offline during module replacement and use a planned maintenance notice for players.
  • Store release archives and known-good module backups outside active Modules and Rocket/Plugins directories.
  • Install one framework or module method at a time; do not combine standard and Auto-Installer folders.
  • After every framework change, verify Rocket’s load message before introducing or updating plugins.
  • After every plugin change, read its dependency and permission instructions before testing commands.
  • Use the server-specific ServerID path shown by the running instance, especially when a hosting account contains multiple Unturned servers.
  • Review BattlEye and third-party-module requirements as part of your server’s security policy, not as an afterthought when loading fails.

The Bottom Line

For a controlled deployment, copy Rocket.Unturned directly into Modules, boot once to generate Servers/<ServerID>/Rocket/, and place plugin DLLs directly in Rocket/Plugins/. Choose Auto-Installer only when automatic updates after restart fit your maintenance and rollback policy, and remember that BattlEye prevents third-party modules from loading.
