The exact supported versions and installer labels change, so do not copy commands from an old tutorial. Confirm each requirement in the current SMF Online Manual and on the official SMF download page before changing your VPS.

What you need before starting
This installation assumes you administer a Linux VPS and can use its control panel or shell with administrative privileges. SMF is a web application: the VPS needs a web server, a supported PHP runtime with the extensions required by your selected SMF release, and a supported database server. The operating system, web server, PHP build, database engine, and SMF package must be compatible with one another.

- A domain name or subdomain that will point to the forum, unless you are testing on an internal address.
- Administrative access for installing and configuring server software.
- A separate database and database login reserved for this forum.
- A current SMF package obtained from the official download page.
- A way to make and restore database and file backups.
Allow time for DNS and HTTPS configuration if the forum will be public. You can install into a subdirectory such as forum or use a dedicated virtual host; decide this before uploading files because it determines the URL visitors will use.
Confirm the current SMF release and requirements
Do this before selecting PHP or database packages. The current stable release cannot be inferred from old announcements: search results still expose SMF 2.0.13 from January 5, 2017, and SMF 2.1 RC4 from July 10, 2021. Those notices are historical and do not establish what is supported today.

- Open the official SMF download page and identify the package marked stable, not a release candidate or development build.
- Note the exact version number and release date.
- Open the matching requirements section in the Online Manual.
- Record the supported PHP range, required PHP extensions, supported database engines and versions, web-server notes, and any file or server-setting instructions.
- Compare those requirements with the versions already installed on your VPS. Upgrade or select the runtime only after this comparison.
Keep this record. If you later request support, the SMF version and the PHP, database, and web-server versions are among the first details that make a problem diagnosable. Requirements are release-specific; a command that was correct for an earlier branch can be unsafe or simply fail on a current one.
Use a compatibility worksheet

Plan the VPS layout and accounts
Use a dedicated virtual host or a clearly separated forum directory. Do not mix SMF files with unrelated applications in the same document root. A separate directory makes backups, upgrades, and rollback easier and limits the effect of a mistake.

Choose the URL first
Decide whether the forum will be at a host such as community.example.com or at a path such as example.com/forum. Point DNS to the VPS and configure the web server to serve the intended document root. If DNS is not ready, you can perform a private test, but make the final URL decision before completing an installation that will be opened to the public.
Create a dedicated database account
Create one database for this forum and one database login used only by it. Grant that login access to its own database rather than broad server-wide privileges. Use a long, unique password and store it in your password manager. The database host and port are the values supplied by your VPS setup; do not assume that every deployment uses the same host name or default port.
Identify the effective web-server account
Files must be readable by the account that runs the web server or PHP handler, but that account should not automatically own every administrative file. Determine the account and group used by your distribution and by your selected PHP handler. The correct ownership model differs between a traditional web-server process, PHP-FPM, containers, and control panels.

Prepare the web server and PHP runtime
Patch the operating system and install or enable only the web-server, PHP, and database components listed in the current SMF requirements. Enable the required PHP extensions through your distribution’s normal package mechanism, then restart the relevant service so the change is active. Check the runtime from the same virtual host that will serve SMF; a command-line PHP binary and the PHP handler used by the web server can have different versions or extension sets.

Set the server’s time zone and clock correctly, configure a firewall that exposes only the services you actually need, and use encrypted administration connections. These are VPS operating practices rather than SMF version requirements, but they prevent avoidable login, cookie, and maintenance problems.
Do not guess from an old package list
Package names and extension bundles differ between Linux distributions. The SMF manual’s requirements and server-settings sections are the authority for the release you selected. If a package name, PHP directive, database version, or web-server setting is not present in that documentation, verify it before applying it.
Download and place the SMF files
- Download the stable package from the official SMF download page. Avoid third-party mirrors unless the official project explicitly directs you to one.
- If the project publishes a checksum or signature for that package, verify it before extraction. Keep the original archive for your installation record.
- Extract the package outside the public directory first, inspect its top-level layout, and then copy the application files into the document root or forum subdirectory you selected.
- Confirm that the web server’s configured document root points to the directory containing SMF’s entry files, not to a parent directory that exposes the archive or an extra nested folder.
- Remove the downloaded archive from any publicly served location.
File-transfer tools and control panels may create files owned by your personal account. Correct that ownership deliberately rather than making the whole tree writable by everyone. Preserve the release archive and the version number in your deployment notes.
Set permissions without weakening the VPS
The official manual lists permissions as an installation topic, but the exact paths and modes are release- and deployment-specific. Follow the current instructions for your SMF version and match them to the effective web-server account you identified earlier.

- Do not recursively set the forum tree to
0777. World-writable files allow any local process that can reach the directory to alter application code. - Keep code and configuration files non-writable by the web process unless the manual explicitly requires a temporary write during installation or an update.
- Grant write access only to the paths the current installer or manual names, and only to the account that needs it.
- If the manual asks for temporary write access, apply it for the installation step, then restore the documented restrictive ownership and modes.
- After an upgrade, check that newly extracted files did not inherit ownership from an upload account or an overly permissive umask.
Containerized, SELinux-enabled, and control-panel-managed VPSs can add access controls beyond ordinary Unix modes. A “permission denied” message can therefore require checking the security policy or service configuration, not simply loosening file modes.
Run the browser installer
Open the forum URL in a browser after the files, virtual host, PHP handler, and database are ready. SMF should redirect you to its installation flow. Labels vary by release, but the installer normally asks for the database connection and the first administrator account.
- Enter the database server address and port provided by your VPS configuration.
- Enter the dedicated database name, database user, and password. Check for leading or trailing spaces when pasting credentials.
- Choose a table prefix only if the installer offers one and you have a reason to distinguish this installation from other tables in the same database. Keep the prefix documented.
- Set the forum name, administrator username, administrator password, and administrator email. Use a unique administrator password that is not reused on the VPS or email account.
- Review the installer summary before submitting. Verify the URL, database name, and account spelling; correcting them here is safer than repairing a partially configured forum.
- Wait for the installer to finish and save any displayed completion details in your deployment record.
If the installer reports a missing extension, unsupported version, or unwritable path, stop and correct that underlying requirement. Do not bypass a compatibility check by changing permissions or forcing an unsupported runtime.
Complete the post-install security steps
Follow every post-install instruction shown by your SMF release. If it asks you to remove, rename, or disable installer files, do so before announcing the forum. Do not leave an installation script reachable from the public URL simply because the administrator login works.
- Test the administrator login in a private browser window, then sign out and confirm that a normal visitor sees the public forum.
- Enable HTTPS and redirect the HTTP site only after confirming the certificate and virtual-host configuration. Check that login cookies and redirects remain on the HTTPS URL.
- Use a strong administrator password and protect the email account used for password recovery.
- Keep the VPS firewall, operating system, web server, PHP runtime, database server, and SMF package updated according to their respective release guidance.
- Limit administrative access through the controls available in your VPS and web-server setup; do not expose database administration services publicly unless there is a specific, secured need.

Record the exact SMF, PHP, database, web-server, and operating-system versions, the installation URL, the database name, and the date of the last successful backup. Never record the database password in a public ticket or forum post.

The forum URL shows the wrong site or a directory listing
The virtual host may point at the wrong document root, or the files may be one directory deeper than expected after extraction. Check the configured root and the top-level SMF files. Remove archives and unrelated files from the public directory.
The installer cannot connect to the database
Recheck the host, port, database name, username, and password exactly as created. Confirm that the database account is allowed to connect from the web server’s host and has access to the selected database. A successful connection from a database administration tool does not prove that the PHP handler uses the same network path or credentials.
A required PHP component or version is rejected
Compare the active web-server PHP handler—not only the command-line interpreter—with the requirements for the exact SMF release. Enable the missing extension through the distribution’s supported package process, restart the handler, and test again. If the VPS cannot provide a supported version, choose a compatible SMF release only when the official project still lists it as supported; otherwise change the runtime.
You see “permission denied” or an unwritable-path warning
Check ownership, group membership, Unix modes, and any mandatory access-control policy. Apply only the paths and temporary permissions documented for your release. Never respond by making every file world-writable.

The page is blank or returns an HTTP 500 error
Inspect the web-server and PHP error logs at the time of the request. Typical causes include a syntax-incompatible PHP version, a missing extension, a failed configuration file write, or a service restart that did not load the intended runtime. Correct the first specific error, then reload the page; repeated blind changes can hide the original cause.
Login loops or redirects point to the wrong host
Check that the configured forum URL, HTTPS policy, proxy headers, and browser cookies agree. Clear cookies for the old host after correcting the URL. If a reverse proxy terminates TLS, ensure it passes the original scheme and host in the manner documented for your web server and SMF release.
Email confirmation or password recovery does not arrive
Confirm that the administrator email is valid, inspect the VPS mail or relay logs, and verify the SMTP or mail settings required by your deployment. Check spam and domain authentication separately; a successful page submission does not prove that a message was delivered.
Backups, updates, and rollback
Back up both the database and the complete SMF file tree. A database-only backup cannot restore uploaded attachments or configuration files, while a file-only backup cannot restore member accounts and posts. Store at least one copy away from the VPS and test restoration before relying on it.
- Read the upgrade notes for the target SMF release and confirm that its PHP and database requirements still match the VPS.
- Make and verify fresh database and file backups.
- Test the upgrade on a private copy when the forum is important or heavily used.
- Schedule maintenance, apply the documented file and database update procedure, and preserve the previous version until verification is complete.
- Open the forum, administrator area, posting, uploads, and password-recovery paths after the update.
- If verification fails, use the tested backups and your recorded versions to roll back rather than improvising destructive fixes on the live database.
Where to get help
Start with the SMF FAQ and the relevant sections of the Online Manual. Search the SMF community for the exact error text together with your SMF, PHP, database, and web-server versions. If the issue is not already documented, ask the community with sanitized logs and configuration details; remove passwords, private keys, database credentials, and personal data first.
SMF’s support information is available at support.simplemachines.org. That page describes optional installation assistance for Charter Members and says Charter Membership is available by donating at least US$50; confirm the current terms on the support page before relying on that option.
Final go-live checklist
- The stable package and its requirements were checked immediately before installation.
- The VPS runs supported PHP, extensions, database, and web-server versions for that package.
- The forum uses a dedicated database and restricted database account.
- The document root and final HTTPS URL are correct.
- Ownership and writable paths follow the current SMF manual; no blanket
0777change was used. - Installer cleanup and other post-install instructions are complete.
- Administrator, visitor, posting, upload, HTTPS, and email flows have been tested.
- Database and file backups exist, are stored separately, and have been restored in a test.
- Exact software versions and recovery notes are recorded.
Once these checks pass, the forum is ready for users. Keep the requirements page and your version record with the deployment notes so the next update starts from verified information rather than an outdated tutorial.
