To install Sponge on a Forge Minecraft server, use SpongeForge: download the build whose filename matches your intended Minecraft and Forge versions, install that exact Forge server, then copy the SpongeForge JAR into the server’s mods folder. Start the server with its normal Forge command or launch script. SpongeForge runs on the server; players do not normally install Sponge separately, although they still need whatever client-side Forge mods your modpack requires.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What “Sponge on Forge” means
SpongeForge is a Forge mod that implements SpongeAPI. It adds Sponge’s server and plugin capabilities while retaining a Forge server, so you can run Minecraft Forge mods and Sponge plugins in the same environment. The installation is therefore an addition to Forge, not a replacement for the Forge server platform.

SpongeVanilla is the separate implementation for servers that do not need Forge. Choosing the right implementation before downloading anything prevents an incompatible server layout.
Choose SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla
| Question | Choose SpongeForge | Choose SpongeVanilla |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need Minecraft Forge mods? | Yes. SpongeForge integrates with Forge so those mods can run. | No. SpongeVanilla is the no-Forge option. |
| Do you already have a Forge server? | Yes. Add the matching SpongeForge JAR to that server’s mods directory. |
No Forge server is required. |
| How much version management is acceptable? | You must keep Minecraft, the Forge build, and SpongeForge’s compatibility requirements aligned. | You avoid Forge-specific compatibility management, but cannot use Forge mods. |
If the server’s modpack depends on Forge, use SpongeForge. If Forge is not required, select SpongeVanilla instead of trying to combine the two implementations.

Requirements and preparation
Have these items ready before changing the server:
- The Minecraft version you intend to run.
- The exact Forge build required by the SpongeForge download you will use.
- A Java Runtime Environment suitable for that server version. Sponge’s FAQ identifies a JRE as required.
- Access to the server directory and permission to run its Forge installer or launch script.
- A backup of the world, configuration files, and existing
modsdirectory, particularly when adding Sponge to a live server.
Do not begin with “the latest Forge” and plan to find a Sponge build afterward. SpongeForge accesses Forge internals, so compatibility is tied to the Forge build identified by the SpongeForge file, not merely to the broad Minecraft version.
Read the SpongeForge filename first
Before installing Forge, inspect the SpongeForge download name. It identifies the Minecraft version and Forge build for which that JAR was built. Treat both values as requirements. The official installation guidance says to use exactly the Forge build shown for the SpongeForge download.

Install a new Forge server
If you are creating the server from scratch, install Forge before adding SpongeForge. You can use the command line or the installer’s graphical interface.
Command-line installation
- Download the Forge installer for the exact build required by your SpongeForge file.
- Place the installer in the directory that will contain the server.
- Open a terminal in that directory.
- Run the installer with the server-install switch:
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer - Allow the installer to create the Forge server files in that target directory.
The installer command must be run with a working Java installation. If the shell reports that Java cannot be found, install or enable a suitable JRE before troubleshooting SpongeForge.
Graphical installer
- Run the Forge installer.
- Select Install Server.
- Choose an empty folder for the server.
- Let the installer finish creating the Forge server files.
Using an empty folder keeps the newly generated Forge files separate from unrelated downloads. Once Forge has been installed, continue in that folder for the SpongeForge step.
Add SpongeForge to the Forge server
- Download the SpongeForge JAR whose filename matches the Minecraft version and Forge build you selected.
- Open the Forge server directory.
- Locate the
modsfolder. If it does not exist, create a folder named exactlymods. - Copy the SpongeForge JAR into that folder. Leave it as a JAR file; the server loads it from the Forge mod location.
- Keep the rest of the Forge server files in place. SpongeForge is added to Forge rather than replacing the Forge server JAR or launch setup.
On an existing Forge installation, this is the central operation: update Forge only if the installed build does not meet SpongeForge’s stated requirement, place SpongeForge in mods, and start the server using the same Forge launch method you already use.
Start the server with Forge
Launch the server through its normal Forge server JAR or generated launch script. A direct JAR invocation follows this pattern:
Rank #3
- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
java -jar forge-version-XYZ.jar
Replace the example filename with the Forge server JAR created for your selected version. If your Forge installation supplies a launch script, use that script instead of inventing a different command; it may provide the arguments needed by that Forge build.
The first successful start is the point at which Forge loads SpongeForge. After the server starts, continue with Sponge configuration and plugin management using the Sponge project’s documentation. Those settings are separate from the initial JAR placement and should be changed only after the base server launches correctly.
Installing SpongeForge on an existing Forge server
You do not need to replace an established Forge server simply to add Sponge. Use this sequence:
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of the world, configuration, and current mod files.
- Record the Minecraft version and the Forge build currently installed.
- Compare that Forge build with the requirement encoded in the SpongeForge download you intend to use.
- If the build does not match, update Forge as necessary while preserving the server’s backup and following the update procedure appropriate to that Forge installation.
- Copy the matching SpongeForge JAR into the existing server’s
modsfolder. - Start the server with the same Forge command or launch script used before the change.
This approach preserves the Forge platform and adds SpongeForge as another server-side mod. Do not assume that a Forge build with the same Minecraft version is interchangeable: SpongeForge’s Forge compatibility is build-specific.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Compatibility checks when startup fails
When a server stops during startup after SpongeForge is added, check the three version values before changing unrelated settings:
- Minecraft version: Does it match the version identified by the SpongeForge download?
- Forge build: Is it exactly the Forge build required by that SpongeForge file?
- SpongeForge file: Did you place the intended JAR in the server’s
modsfolder rather than a file for another target?
| Symptom or situation | Likely check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The server fails immediately after adding SpongeForge | Minecraft, Forge, and SpongeForge do not form the required version combination. | Read the SpongeForge filename again and install the exact Forge build it specifies. |
| The Forge installer will not run | Java is missing or the available runtime is unsuitable for the server version. | Install or enable a compatible Java Runtime Environment, then rerun the installer. |
| SpongeForge appears not to load | The JAR is outside the server’s mods folder or the server was started with a non-Forge command. |
Move the JAR into mods and launch through the Forge JAR or Forge launch script. |
| A managed host offers an automated Sponge option | The panel may support only particular Minecraft or Forge combinations. | Ask the provider to confirm support for your exact Minecraft version, Forge build, and SpongeForge release before installing. |
Changing several unrelated settings at once makes diagnosis harder. Establish a clean Forge launch with the required versions, then add configuration or plugins one change at a time.

SpongeForge is installed server-side as a Forge mod. The installation procedure places the JAR in the dedicated server’s mods folder; players do not normally install Sponge separately on their clients.
That does not mean every client can connect to every SpongeForge server. Client requirements are determined by the other Forge mods and the modpack running on the server. If a server uses mods that require matching client installations, players must install those mods and any required Forge profile according to the modpack’s instructions. Sponge itself is the server component in this setup.

Configure networking for players outside your home
A server that runs successfully on the host computer is not automatically reachable from the internet. If you host at home, configure port forwarding on your router so incoming connections are sent to the machine running the Minecraft server. Use the server’s configured game port and the correct local machine address.
Port forwarding is not needed for players connecting only within a properly configured local network, and a managed host generally handles the network edge for you. For a home server, test the connection from a network outside your home rather than relying only on a local connection test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Some game-server control panels provide an installation choice for Sponge. The panel can simplify file placement and startup, but it does not remove the compatibility requirement. Verify that the provider supports the exact Minecraft version, Forge build, and SpongeForge release you selected. If the panel installs a different combination, use its version controls or contact support before migrating a world.
Keep a downloadable backup even when a host supplies automated installers. A panel can recreate files, but your world and server configuration remain your responsibility.
What to do after the first successful launch
Once Forge starts with SpongeForge present, proceed in this order:
- Stop the server and make a fresh backup of the newly created or updated files.
- Read the Sponge documentation for configuration locations and the plugin-management workflow for your SpongeForge release.
- Apply only the configuration changes you need, restarting to isolate any problem.
- Add Sponge plugins one at a time and confirm that each one supports your Minecraft and Sponge environment.
- Give players the client-side Forge and modpack instructions they need; do not distribute SpongeForge as a client requirement unless a specific setup explicitly calls for it.
Keeping the initial installation separate from later plugin and configuration changes gives you a known-good baseline. If a later change breaks startup, remove or revert that change first rather than replacing the entire server platform.
