Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On most ARM64 Linux computers, you cannot install the standard Steam client as if it were a natively supported Ubuntu or Debian app. Valve’s regular Linux requirements specify x86_64/AMD64. ARM users need a platform-specific solution—such as the Steam Frame software stack—or an experimental translation setup such as Box64, and neither is a universal guarantee that Steam or a particular game will work.
Check your CPU architecture before installing Steam
Open a terminal and run uname -m. An output of aarch64 or arm64 indicates ARM64; x86_64 indicates the architecture supported by Valve’s standard Linux client documentation. That documentation also lists 32-bit and 64-bit graphics drivers as requirements. See Valve’s Steam for Linux README.
If your system reports ARM64, do not assume that apt install steam or Valve’s standard Debian package is a native ARM installer. The ordinary Debian/Ubuntu workflow is intended for the documented x86_64/AMD64 environment. An ARM setup needs a supported platform stack or instruction translation, and its requirements depend on the device and distribution.
ARM Linux options for running Steam
| Approach | What it means | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Steam for Linux | The client requirements documented by Valve are for x86_64/AMD64 and include 32-bit graphics support. | For the documented architecture; it is not a native ARM64 installation route. Valve’s requirements. |
| Steam Frame platform stack | Valve documents an Arm64 Snapdragon platform using FEX to translate x86 instructions and Proton to support Windows games on Linux. | Specific to Steam Frame documentation; it does not establish general Steam support for other ARM computers. Valve’s Steam Frame documentation. |
| Box64-based setup | The Box64 project describes running Linux Steam with Box86 or Box32 and binfmt enabled. | An experimental, project-guided route. Compatibility and setup vary by device and distribution. Box64’s Steam guide. |
Steam Frame: a platform-specific Valve route
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as an Arm64 Snapdragon platform. Its compatibility stack uses FEX to translate x86 instructions for Arm64, while Proton supports Windows games on Linux. This is evidence for Steam Frame’s design, not a promise that the same setup is available or supported on a Raspberry Pi or another ARM64 Linux board. Check the documentation for the exact hardware and software you own.

- 【More Adjustment】-800 / 1200 / 1600 DPI Resolution Optical Tracking Technology provides more sensitivity than standard optical mice for smooth and precise tracking on a wide range of surfaces.
- 【Useful Page Buttons】-Added next/previous buttons provide convenience when webpage browsing; the superior choice for internet surfers, gamers and people who work at length at the computer.
- 【Smart Dormancy】-Enters power saving mode (power is cut off completely) after 8 minutes idle, Press right or left button for it to wake.
- 【Wide Compatibility】-Compatible with Windows 8/7/10 / Vista / XP / 2000, Mac OS, Linux (NOTE: the forward and backward buttons are not recognized on Mac). Plug and play.
Box64: a community emulation route
The Box64 project guide describes an experimental Steam setup that relies on Box86 or Box32 and binfmt. Follow the current project instructions for your particular distribution and device rather than copying generic Ubuntu commands: the required packages, configuration, and compatibility can differ. The guide notes that systems with less than 6 GB of RAM may need swap for optimal performance; treat that as Box64 project guidance, not a general Steam requirement or a guarantee of adequate performance.
There is no general Valve installation command sequence established for arbitrary ARM Linux distributions. Before attempting a translated setup, confirm that the project supports your device and distribution, and expect that individual games may still fail.

Steam won’t open on Linux: check graphics support first
For a supported x86_64 installation, Valve says missing or faulty OpenGL drivers are a common reason Steam fails to start. Its Linux startup troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether a 32-bit OpenGL program works. On Ubuntu, install mesa-utils:i386 if needed, then run glxinfo to inspect OpenGL support. A failed check points toward the graphics stack or 32-bit driver support; it is not an ARM compatibility fix.
When Steam opens but a game or runtime fails
Check the packaging and runtime environment
Valve does not officially support the Flatpak and Snap Steam packages. In those formats, a game or runtime can also be affected by container conditions, including user-namespace availability and filesystem access. If the client starts but games fail, include the install format in your troubleshooting details and check the package’s sandbox configuration. Valve’s Steam for Linux packaging and runtime notes describe these caveats.

Collect details and logs for a game-specific failure
Record the distribution and version, CPU architecture, GPU and driver, Steam install format, affected game, and whether the failure occurs in Steam itself or only in one title. For Proton or runtime problems, Valve documents these environment variables for collecting logs:
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1enables Steam Linux Runtime logging.PROTON_LOG=1enables Proton logging for a Windows game launched through Proton.
Use Valve’s Steam Linux Runtime documentation for runtime logging details. A log can help distinguish a client, runtime, graphics, or game-specific fault; it does not by itself establish that a title is compatible with an ARM translation setup. Avoid applying a generic launch option as a fix without evidence from the affected game’s compatibility reports or logs.
