Start with the Steam games and online modes you actually play, then check whether each works on Linux or through Proton—and whether its anti-cheat allows Linux access. After that, compare the specific PC’s graphics performance at your target resolution and verify operating-system and driver support. A Linux label or an AMD GPU alone does not guarantee that every Steam game will work.
Check your games before you choose a PC
Steam compatibility is a game-by-game question. Proton lets many Windows games run on Linux, but support can vary by game and may change after updates. Valve says that over 18,000 titles ran on SteamOS “last we checked”; that is Valve’s point-in-time estimate, not a guarantee for any particular game. Valve’s SteamOS page
- Make a list of games you consider essential, including the multiplayer modes you use.
- Check each title’s current compatibility information, and look beyond whether the game itself launches: its launcher, middleware, and online features may also matter.
- Pay particular attention to competitive multiplayer games that use anti-cheat software. A machine can have ample performance and still be unable to access a game’s online services on Linux.
Valve includes anti-cheat and middleware support among its compatibility criteria, and notes that some providers are unsupported. Use Steam Deck ratings as clues, not desktop guarantees
Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program checks four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Those checks consider such things as controller support and button prompts, readable text at the Deck’s default resolution, whether launchers are navigable, and whether the game and its middleware work through Proton. The labels can help you understand the Deck experience, but they do not certify every Linux desktop, graphics card, distribution, or configuration. Valve describes the categories this way: Verified works well by default on Deck; Playable may need manual configuration; Unsupported is not currently considered playable on Deck; and Unknown means it has not been checked. Steam lets you select a compatibility tool for an individual game through that game’s properties. Trying a different tool can be useful when troubleshooting, but forcing Proton is not proof that a game—or its anti-cheat or online features—will work.

Compare the whole PC, not one component name
Choose hardware around the games, resolution, and graphics settings you want. Compare independent benchmarks for the exact graphics hardware and games that matter to you; the official compatibility sources cited here do not establish a universal best CPU, GPU, Linux distribution, or desktop configuration, and they do not provide comparative performance benchmarks.

What Valve’s AMD desktop update does—and does not—tell you
Valve says compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs, including desktops, improved with recent Steam and SteamOS 3.8 updates. That makes AMD-powered desktops worth considering if you want a SteamOS setup, but it does not mean every AMD system is supported, that every game will run, or that a PC comes with SteamOS installed.
