Choose the installation method before you begin
Ajenti is a modular Linux and BSD server administration panel. On a VPS, it runs as a service and presents its web interface over HTTPS on TCP port 8000 by default. The correct installation path depends mainly on the distribution release and the way that release manages Python packages.

Ajenti documents support for Debian 9 or later, Ubuntu Bionic or later, and RHEL 8 or later. Other Linux distributions may require a manual installation and additional adaptation. Check the VPS image and release before running any installer; the release determines whether the legacy script can work at all.
Prepare the VPS
Confirm the operating system
Log in with an account that can run commands through sudo. Confirm that the VPS is running one of the documented Debian, Ubuntu or RHEL releases. If you are on a newer Debian or Ubuntu release, plan to use the virtual-environment installer rather than the older OS-level script.

Make sure you can administer the machine
The installation commands need administrator privileges. The official commands invoke the installer through sudo; use an account with permission to do that, or switch to a root shell before starting. Keep an existing SSH session open while you install so that a service or firewall mistake does not remove your only access path.
Plan access to port 8000
Ajenti listens on HTTPS port 8000 by default. Before exposing that port publicly, decide which administrator IP addresses should be allowed to reach it. Apply the restriction in both the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating system’s host firewall when both are available. A web panel that accepts connections from the entire internet should be treated as a high-value administrative surface.
Recommended method: install Ajenti in a virtual environment
Use this method on Debian 12 and later or Ubuntu 24.04 and later. It is also the safest default when you are unsure whether the system’s Python installation is governed by PEP 668. Ajenti’s documentation specifically recommends this method to avoid pip’s “externally managed environment” error on newer Debian and Ubuntu releases.
1. Run the official installer
From an SSH session, run the command exactly as shown:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install-venv.sh | sudo bash -s -This downloads Ajenti’s virtual-environment installation script from the project repository and executes it with administrator privileges. The environment keeps Ajenti’s Python packages separate from the distribution-managed Python installation, so pip does not have to modify the system environment protected by the distribution.
If you prefer to inspect a script before executing it, download it for review and then run the documented command after you are satisfied with its contents. Do not replace this installer with the legacy script on a current Debian or Ubuntu image simply because the older command appears in older tutorials.
2. Let the installer finish
Keep the SSH connection open while the script installs the panel and its dependencies. Do not interrupt the process partway through. When it completes, Ajenti’s service unit should be available for systemd management.
3. Restart the service
Restart Ajenti with:
sudo systemctl restart ajentiThe runtime documentation also lists service ajenti restart and /etc/init.d/ajenti restart as alternatives on systems where those service interfaces are used.

4. Open the panel
In a browser, go to:
https://SERVER_IP:8000Replace SERVER_IP with the VPS’s public IP address. The panel is served over HTTPS and uses port 8000 by default, so include both the https:// scheme and the port number.
5. Use the bootstrap credentials
The documented default username is root, and the password is the system’s root password. These credentials are a bootstrap detail, not a finished security configuration. Sign in only after restricting access to trusted administrator IPs, use a strong root password, and do not enable autologin on a public system. Ajenti’s runtime documentation explicitly warns that public autologin is a security issue.

Why the old automatic installer fails on newer Ubuntu and Debian
Older guides often use this command:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install.sh | sudo bash -s -Ajenti still documents the script, but describes it as an OS-level installation that does not work with newer Debian and Ubuntu releases. On systems enforcing the externally managed environment rule, pip refuses to install or modify packages in the distribution-owned Python environment. An Ubuntu 24.04 issue shows the legacy path ending with an externally-managed-environment error.
Do not “fix” that error by adding pip’s system-breaking override. On a current Debian or Ubuntu VPS, stop the failed attempt, use the virtual-environment installer above, and then restart the Ajenti service. The isolated installation is the documented solution for this packaging model.
Manual installation on Debian or Ubuntu
A manual route is useful when you need to control native dependencies or choose a particular plugin set. On modern releases, perform the pip portion in an isolated virtual environment rather than forcing a system-wide installation.
1. Enable Ubuntu’s Universe repository
On Ubuntu, enable Universe with:
sudo add-apt-repository universeThe command is not needed on Debian, and repository configuration can differ between distributions. Confirm that the required repository is available before installing the native packages.

2. Install the documented native dependencies
For Debian or Ubuntu, install the build tools, Python headers, libraries and time-synchronization package listed by Ajenti:
sudo apt-get install build-essential python3-pip python3-dev python3-lxml libssl-dev python3-dbus python3-augeas python3-apt ntpdateThese packages provide the compiler, Python development files and native libraries needed by Ajenti and its plugins. If apt reports a dependency or repository problem, resolve that operating-system issue before attempting the pip commands.

3. Update Python packaging tools
The documented manual procedure upgrades setuptools, pip and wheel:
sudo pip3 install setuptools pip wheel -UOn a current distribution, run this inside the isolated environment you chose for Ajenti. Avoid using a system-pip override that bypasses the distribution’s externally managed protection.

The minimal set in Ajenti’s guide is:
sudo pip3 install ajenti-panel ajenti.plugin.core ajenti.plugin.dashboard ajenti.plugin.settings ajenti.plugin.pluginsThe core, dashboard, settings and plugins packages provide the base panel and the minimal documented plugin group. Ajenti’s manual guide also lists an all-plugins installation for administrators who need a broader feature set. Install only the plugins you intend to use when keeping the panel small is more important than having every module available.
5. Start and test the service
After the manual packages are in place, use the Ajenti service command where the service unit is present:
sudo systemctl restart ajentiThen browse to https://SERVER_IP:8000. If the manual installation did not create a service unit, use the troubleshooting procedure below to run the panel in verbose or development mode and identify the missing service configuration or dependency.
Manual installation on RHEL
Ajenti documents RHEL 8 and later as supported. The RHEL path uses EPEL and DNF for native dependencies, followed by pip for Ajenti and the plugins you select.

sudo dnf install epel-release2. Install the native dependencies
sudo dnf install -y gcc python3-devel python3-pip python3-pillow python3-augeas python3-dbus chrony openssl-devel redhat-lsb-coreThis installs the compiler, Python development package, pip, image and Augeas bindings, D-Bus support, time synchronization, OpenSSL development files and the RHEL distribution identification package named in Ajenti’s guide.
3. Install Ajenti and the plugins you need
The RHEL instructions then use pip to install ajenti-panel and the desired Ajenti plugins. Keep the plugin list deliberately scoped to your administrative needs. If you use a Python virtual environment, activate it before running pip so the panel’s packages remain separate from system Python.

4. Restart and connect
Once the package installation is complete, restart the Ajenti service and connect to https://SERVER_IP:8000. Use the documented root bootstrap credentials, then apply the firewall and autologin precautions before leaving the panel reachable from an untrusted network.

Secure the first login
Restrict TCP 8000
Create an allow rule for the administrator IP addresses that need the panel and deny broad public access. Apply the rule in the cloud firewall and on the VPS host firewall when both layers are enabled. The exact interface and syntax depend on your VPS platform and distribution, so do not copy a firewall command intended for a different system.
Protect the root credential
The initial Ajenti login uses the system root password. Use a long, unique password and protect the SSH and VPS account that controls it. Do not paste the password into shell history, support tickets or browser autofill on a shared machine.
Leave autologin disabled
Ajenti warns that autologin on a public system is a security issue. Require authentication each time the panel is opened, particularly when port 8000 can be reached outside a private administration network.
Keep the HTTPS URL intact
Use the HTTPS address, including port 8000. If the browser warns that the certificate is missing or invalid, fix Ajenti’s certificate generation rather than switching to an unencrypted HTTP URL.
Troubleshoot common installation and first-run failures
“externally managed environment” from pip
This indicates that the legacy OS-level installation is colliding with the distribution’s protected Python environment. It is especially common on Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 12 or later. Do not force pip to modify system Python. Re-run the virtual-environment installer:
curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ajenti/ajenti/master/scripts/install-venv.sh | sudo bash -s -After it finishes, restart Ajenti with sudo systemctl restart ajenti and try the HTTPS URL again.
The browser receives an empty response after login
Ajenti’s installation guide gives this upgrade command for the bundled Python environment:

/opt/ajenti/bin/python3 -m pip install gipc gevent -URun it with the privileges required to write to /opt/ajenti. Restart the service after the packages are upgraded, then retry the login.
The HTTPS certificate is missing
Generate Ajenti’s certificate with:
/opt/ajenti/bin/python3 /opt/ajenti/bin/ajenti-ssl-gen $(hostname)The command uses the VPS hostname as the certificate-generation argument. Restart the service after generation and reconnect to the HTTPS endpoint.
The service will not start
Start by reading Ajenti’s main log and any crash log:
/var/log/ajenti/ajenti.log/var/log/ajenti/crash-DATE.logThe crash filename contains the date, so list the directory and open the newest matching file. Look for the first dependency, permission or certificate error rather than treating later traceback lines as separate failures.
For foreground diagnostics, stop the service and run the panel in verbose mode:

/usr/local/bin/ajenti-panel --devUse one diagnostic mode at a time. The terminal output can reveal a Python import failure or another startup problem that is not obvious from the browser’s connection error. Return to the service unit after diagnosing the cause instead of leaving a development process running as the permanent panel.
The panel opens, but the login does not work
Verify that you are using username root and the current system root password. A password for an SSH user without root access is not the documented default Ajenti credential. If the root password was changed after installation, use the current value, not the one that existed when the installer ran.
The browser cannot reach port 8000
Check the URL first: it must be https://SERVER_IP:8000. Then check both firewall layers for a rule that allows your administrator IP. If the service still does not respond, return to /var/log/ajenti/ajenti.log and the verbose panel command; a service startup failure and a blocked network port produce similar browser symptoms but require different fixes.
