Windows users can choose the Overwolf app or the standalone CurseForge app. If you are setting it up for Minecraft, you do not need to install Minecraft first: CurseForge creates a separate modding environment.
Check whether your computer is supported
CurseForge Support lists these supported platforms: Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 and higher, and Linux on official Ubuntu distributions. Its Getting Started guide links to the official app download.
On Windows, there are two app options. The Overwolf version and standalone version do not have identical supported-game lists, so check the guide’s list if you plan to manage games other than Minecraft. Choose the option that fits the games you want to manage and the packaging you prefer; neither is required for every user.
Download and install the app
- Open the official CurseForge app download page and select the download for your operating system. On Windows, choose either the Overwolf or standalone option.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow its on-screen instructions.
- Launch CurseForge and complete the setup prompts. Installed games and mods are intended to be detected automatically. If a game is missing, use the app’s scanning option or add it manually through Settings.
Set up CurseForge for Minecraft
CurseForge maintains a separate Minecraft modding environment, including a dedicated game installation. You do not have to install Minecraft in advance. During setup, choose where the modding files should be stored. The Minecraft setup guide, last modified December 4, 2025, documents these standard locations:

These are defaults, not mandatory destinations. Choose Standard to use the recommended location, or Advanced if you want to select another folder. The Minecraft Getting Started guide explains the folder setup.
Install a modpack or mod
Install from the app
Open the Minecraft section of CurseForge, go to Discover or Browse, find the modpack or mod you want, and use its install option. The app adds the selected content to its Minecraft modding environment.

Install from a project website
You can also use an official project page’s Install link. The link can open CurseForge and start the installation flow. - A modpack setup or download error: For some errors, try Repair Installation in the app.
- CurseForge cannot create the Minecraft directory: Check that your Windows or macOS account can read, write, and modify the chosen folder. You can also select a different modding-folder location.
- A launcher download reports a network error: Check that your connection is stable and that firewall or antivirus software is not blocking Minecraft or Overwolf.
- A modpack fails with a Java launch error: Java may be required to launch some modpacks. If Java is missing or outdated, the guide suggests installing the current version. This is a modpack launch issue, not a prerequisite for installing the CurseForge client.
