How to Install the Deno JavaScript Runtime on Ubuntu

The official Deno shell installer is the fastest current-release path on Ubuntu. This guide covers its default binary location, PATH troubleshooting, package alternatives, manual x86_64 and arm64 archives, updates, removal, and container use.

The simplest current-release installation on Ubuntu is Deno’s official Linux shell installer. It normally puts the executable at ~/.deno/bin/deno, adds a shell environment line that updates your PATH, and can be checked with deno --version. Ubuntu does not have an official Deno APT repository, so apt is not the standard installation route.

Choose an installation method before you begin

Deno is distributed as a single binary executable with no external dependencies. That makes a per-user installation practical on Ubuntu: you can install it without changing system directories or affecting other users. The right method depends on whether you want the newest upstream release, central administrative control, a manually selected archive, or a container image.

Method Release freshness Where it installs Administrative scope Architecture or environment Best fit
Official shell installer Recommended by Deno for the most up-to-date Linux release Usually ~/.deno/bin/deno Per user by default Supported Linux systems handled by the installer Most local Ubuntu installations
Ubuntu or Snap package Community-maintained; may lag behind Deno’s current release Managed by the package system Usually centrally managed Depends on the package source Organisations that require package-managed software
npm Depends on the published npm package and your update policy Your global npm prefix Controlled by npm permissions and configuration Any Ubuntu system with npm configured JavaScript toolchains already managed through npm
Manual archive You choose the release archive and can verify its SHA-256 file ~/.local/bin or /usr/local/bin Per user or system-wide Linux x86_64 or arm64 archives Audited, reproducible, or offline-style deployments
Docker image Selected through the image release or tag you deploy Inside the container Controlled by the container platform Ubuntu and other Linux variants supported by Deno images Services that should run in containers rather than a host shell

For an ordinary Ubuntu workstation or development server, use the shell installer. Select a package only when your organisation requires centrally managed packages and you have checked its publisher and update cadence.

Prerequisites and a quick environment check

The shell installation needs a working shell and curl. Run these checks before installing:

uname -m
command -v curl
printf '%sn' "$SHELL"

The architecture output is useful if you decide to install a release archive manually. The shell installer handles the normal Linux installation path, while the manual method requires you to choose the matching archive yourself.

You do not need to place Deno in a system directory for a personal installation. Keeping it under your home directory avoids changing files used by other Ubuntu users and normally avoids sudo.

Install Deno with the official Linux shell installer

1. Run the installer

Run the official command in a terminal:

curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh | sh

The -f option makes curl fail on an HTTP error, -sS keeps normal output quiet while still showing errors, and -L follows redirects. The command downloads the installer from Deno and passes it to the shell. If your security policy does not permit piping a downloaded script directly to a shell, download it first, inspect it, and then execute the local file:

curl -fsSL https://deno.land/install.sh -o deno-install.sh
less deno-install.sh
sh deno-install.sh

Use the same trusted URL in both cases. The installer normally writes the binary to $HOME/.deno/bin/deno. It may also append a line such as . "$HOME/.deno/env" to your shell startup file. That environment file is what adds Deno’s directory to the current shell’s PATH when a new shell starts.

2. Reload the shell environment

Close and reopen the terminal, or start a new login shell. If you know which startup file was changed, you can source it directly; for Bash, for example:

. ~/.bashrc

Use the startup file appropriate to your shell. The installer may choose .bashrc, .zshrc, or .profile. Do not add several competing Deno lines simply because one shell file did not appear to change; first check the files and the installer output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Verify the runtime

Run:

deno --version

A successful installation prints Deno’s version information and the versions of the components included with that build. This command tests both that the binary exists and that your shell can find it through PATH.

Why Ubuntu says deno: command not found

Most failures immediately after installation are environment-refresh problems, not a missing binary. Work through these checks in order.

Start a new terminal first

Open a completely new terminal window and run deno --version again. A terminal that was already open before the installer changed your startup file retains the old PATH.

Check the expected directory

ls -l ~/.deno/bin/deno
printf '%sn' "$PATH"
command -v deno

If the first command shows the executable but command -v deno returns nothing, the file is installed and the problem is only path configuration. If the file is absent, review the installer’s terminal output for a download or permission error and run the installer again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the shell environment line

Search your shell startup files for the line that sources Deno’s environment file:

grep -n 'deno/env' ~/.bashrc ~/.zshrc ~/.profile 2>/dev/null

The expected form is similar to . "$HOME/.deno/env". Source the file that contains it, or open a new terminal. If you use a different shell, put the equivalent source command in that shell’s startup configuration rather than copying a Bash-specific file blindly.

Account for a custom DENO_INSTALL directory

If the DENO_INSTALL environment variable was set when you ran the installer, the binary is placed under $DENO_INSTALL/bin instead of the default ~/.deno/bin. Check the variable and the corresponding path:

printf '%sn' "$DENO_INSTALL"
ls -l "$DENO_INSTALL/bin/deno"
printf '%sn' "$PATH"

Use the environment file generated for that custom location, or add its bin directory to the startup configuration used by your shell. A custom install directory is useful when a managed workstation keeps developer tools in a designated location, but it also explains why checking only ~/.deno/bin can give a misleading result.

Can you install Deno with apt?

Deno does not publish an official APT repository. Ubuntu repositories, Snap packages, and other distribution packages may exist, but they are community maintained and can trail the current Deno release. Their packaging, update schedule, and support policy belong to the package maintainer rather than to Deno’s official Linux installer.

A package-managed installation is reasonable when your organisation requires software to come from an approved repository, be tracked by configuration management, or be updated during a controlled maintenance window. Before choosing one, check:

  • Who publishes and signs the package.
  • Which Deno release the package currently contains.
  • How quickly security and compatibility updates are made available.
  • Whether the package installs for one user or system-wide.
  • Whether the package’s executable directory is already on your users’ PATH.

If you simply need the current upstream Linux release, the official shell installer is the documented choice. Do not add an unofficial APT repository merely because a package search produces a similarly named result.

Install Deno with npm

Deno also provides an npm installation route:

npm install -g deno

This option assumes that npm is already installed and configured on Ubuntu. The -g flag places the package in npm’s global prefix, so the resulting command is available only if that prefix’s binary directory is on your PATH. Verify the result with:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
deno --version
npm prefix -g

Global npm permissions differ between Ubuntu setups. If npm reports that it cannot write to its global directory, fix the npm prefix or use the installation method approved by your administrator rather than applying broad write permissions to system directories. Treat npm as a package-managed alternative: check the package’s release timing and provenance if matching the newest Deno release matters.

Install a Deno release manually from a Linux archive

Manual installation gives you explicit control over the archive, destination, permissions, and checksum verification. It is useful for a build image, an audited workstation, or a machine where the shell installer is not allowed.

1. Select the correct archive

  • For 64-bit Intel or AMD Ubuntu, use deno-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip.
  • For 64-bit ARM Ubuntu, use deno-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip.

Confirm the machine’s architecture with uname -m before downloading. Do not install an x86_64 binary on an arm64 host or assume that an archive for another operating system will run on Ubuntu.

2. Verify the release archive

Each release archive has a matching SHA-256 file. Download the checksum file from the same release location as the archive, calculate the local digest, and compare the two values:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sha256sum deno-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip

Replace the filename with the arm64 archive when appropriate. The calculated 64-character digest must exactly match the value published for that archive. Stop if it does not match; a mismatched checksum can indicate an incomplete download, the wrong release file, or a tampered transfer.

3. Extract and install for one user

Unzip the archive, make the executable runnable, and move it into a per-user binary directory:

unzip deno-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.zip
auto_dir="$HOME/.local/bin"
mkdir -p "$auto_dir"
chmod +x deno
mv deno "$auto_dir/deno"

The variable in this example is only a shell convenience; the destination is ~/.local/bin. Add that directory to your PATH if Ubuntu does not already include it, then open a new shell and run deno --version.

4. Install system-wide when required

For a shared installation, move the executable to /usr/local/bin instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo install -m 0755 deno /usr/local/bin/deno
deno --version

This changes the system’s executable namespace and normally requires administrator privileges. Use it only when multiple users or a service account must share the same manually selected binary. Keep a record of the release and checksum so the file can be replaced deliberately during an upgrade.

deno upgrade

This asks the installed runtime to obtain a newer release. After it completes, run deno --version and check that the expected executable is still being selected with command -v deno. If you installed through npm, Snap, an Ubuntu package, or a manually managed archive, update it through that same mechanism instead of mixing update paths.

On a managed system, decide whether upgrades are automatic or scheduled. Mixing a package-manager installation with a separately downloaded binary can make troubleshooting difficult because two different copies may be present on the same machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall Deno cleanly

Shell-installer installation

First run Deno’s cleanup command:

deno clean

Then remove the shell-installer directory and delete the Deno environment-source line from whichever startup file contains it:

rm -rf ~/.deno

Open a new terminal and run command -v deno. It should return no path unless another installation remains.

Other installation methods

  • Remove an npm installation with npm, using the same global configuration that installed it.
  • Remove a Snap or Ubuntu package through its package manager.
  • Delete the manually copied file from ~/.local/bin or /usr/local/bin, depending on where you placed it.
  • Remove a container image through your container-management workflow rather than deleting a host binary.

If more than one method was used over time, inspect command -v deno and each likely binary directory before deleting anything. The command’s path identifies which copy your current shell is executing.

Run Deno in an Ubuntu-based container

Deno publishes official Docker images for Ubuntu and other Linux variants. A container installation is separate from a host installation: the runtime lives inside the image, and installing Deno on the Ubuntu host does not automatically make it available in a container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a container image when the application is deployed as a service and its runtime, dependencies, and startup command should be versioned together. Choose the host installation when you are running scripts interactively, developing locally, or managing a system-level service directly. Keep image updates under the same review and rollback process as other production image changes; the exact image tag and command depend on the deployment configuration you select.

Practical decision checklist

  • Want the simplest current release: use the official shell installer and reload your shell before verifying.
  • Need central package governance: use an approved Ubuntu, Snap, or npm source after checking its version and update cadence.
  • Need a reproducible binary: select the x86_64 or arm64 archive, verify its SHA-256 value, and install it in a controlled directory.
  • Need several users to share one copy: place a verified binary in /usr/local/bin with administrator approval.
  • Need an isolated service runtime: use an official Deno container image rather than relying on the host’s PATH.
  • See command not found: start a new shell, check ~/.deno/bin or $DENO_INSTALL/bin, and inspect the startup-file source line.

Once deno --version succeeds from the shell or service environment where you will run your code, the Ubuntu installation is complete.
