For the listed release, the reliable setup is Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge, WebDisplays 2.0.2-1.20.1, and a compatible Minecraft Chromium Embedded Framework (MCEF) build. Put the same compatible mod set on the dedicated server and on every client that joins. MCEF is mandatory: without it, WebDisplays screens remain black and cannot load web content.

WebDisplays creates interactive browser screens inside Minecraft. The official project distribution targets Minecraft Java 1.20 through 1.20.1 on Forge. Its listed 1.20.1 release is WebDisplays 2.0.2-1.20.1, dated October 19, 2024 on the CurseForge project listing.
The Fabric option is a community port maintained in a separate repository. It supports Minecraft 1.20.1, but its jar, loader, MCEF package and setup are not interchangeable with the official Forge release.

The CurseForge listing recorded 2,442,902 total downloads in a snapshot taken October 15, 2026. Download totals do not change the compatibility requirements: select files by Minecraft version, loader and dependency version rather than by popularity.
What must be installed on a dedicated server and on each client
A modded server and a modded client negotiate the installed mod set when a player connects. For WebDisplays, every joining player should run the same compatible WebDisplays version as the server. Install the matching MCEF dependency in the server environment and on each client as required by the MCEF build you selected.

- Use one loader throughout. Forge jars belong in a Forge instance; Fabric jars belong in a Fabric instance.
- Keep the WebDisplays version identical on the server and every client.
- Match MCEF to both the Minecraft version and loader. A loader mismatch can prevent startup even when the WebDisplays jar itself is correct.
- Give players the same dependency list instead of asking them to add only WebDisplays.
MCEF supplies the embedded Chromium browser that renders pages. WebDisplays can create the in-game screen without a functioning browser backend, but the result is a black, non-rendering display.

Official Forge installation for Minecraft 1.20.1
1. Prepare a clean server instance
Make a backup of the server directory and confirm that the server is running Java Edition 1.20.1. Stop the server before changing its files. If the world already uses other mods, record their versions so you can identify a new conflict rather than troubleshooting several changes at once.
2. Install the matching Forge server
Install a Forge server for Minecraft 1.20.1 using the normal Forge installer or the server package supplied for your environment. Start it once so Forge generates its standard directories, then stop it. The first launch also confirms that the Java runtime and server files work before WebDisplays is introduced.
3. Add WebDisplays to the server
- Open the server’s
modsdirectory. Create it if the Forge installation did not generate one. - Copy the WebDisplays 2.0.2-1.20.1 Forge jar into that directory. Do not rename it in a way that hides its version.
- Copy the MCEF build compatible with Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge into the same server installation as directed by that MCEF release.
- Check that you have not left a Fabric WebDisplays jar or a second, incompatible MCEF jar in the folder.
The official project states that MCEF is required. The exact MCEF packaging and whether its browser files are generated on first launch depend on the selected MCEF build, so follow that build’s own installation notes rather than copying archives from an unrelated project.

4. Install the identical set on every client
- Create or select a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile for each player.
- Place the same WebDisplays 2.0.2-1.20.1 jar in the client’s
modsdirectory. - Install the same compatible MCEF build and any other dependencies required by it.
- Remove older WebDisplays or MCEF versions from the profile to avoid duplicate-mod errors.
Clients should use the same loader family and compatible Forge version as the server. If one player receives a missing-mod or rejected-version message, compare the complete file names in both mods folders rather than reinstalling only the headline mod.
5. First launch and log check
- Start the server with the Forge launch script.
- Watch the console until Forge finishes loading. A missing dependency, duplicate file or incompatible Minecraft version normally appears as a clearly labelled error during this phase.
- If the server stops, shut it down fully, correct the named mismatch, and start it again.
- After the server reaches its normal ready state, connect with a client containing the identical mod set.
Repeat this check after every WebDisplays or MCEF update. A server that starts successfully but shows black screens still needs an MCEF initialization check on both sides.
Fabric 1.20.1 community-port installation
Use this section only if you intentionally run Fabric. The community port documents a different set of prerequisites from the official Forge project.

Prerequisites
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Fabric Loader 0.14.0 or newer.
- Fabric API for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- MCEF specifically built for Fabric 1.20.1.
- Java 17 or newer.
Install the port
- Install a Fabric 1.20.1 server and launch it once to create the server structure.
- Stop the server and place
webdisplays-fabric-1.0.0.jarin the server’smodsdirectory. - Place Fabric API and the Fabric 1.20.1 MCEF build in that same directory.
- Install the identical Fabric Loader, Fabric API, WebDisplays port jar and MCEF build in every client profile.
- Start the server, inspect the log for dependency or Java errors, and then connect with a matching client.
The Fabric port documents additional blocks and permission-related features, but those additions do not make its jar compatible with Forge. Keep a separate server and client profile for each loader path.

Once the server and clients load the mod successfully, build a flat rectangular screen in the world. The documented minimum is a 2-by-2 rectangle of screen blocks.
- Place at least four screen blocks as a rectangle that is two blocks wide and two blocks high. Larger rectangles can be built by extending the same pattern.
- Right-click the bottom-left block of the rectangle. This creates or activates the WebDisplays screen.
- Hold the sneak key and right-click the screen, described in the port documentation as a shift-right-click, to enter the URL.
- Type the complete web address and confirm it. The embedded browser should begin loading it through MCEF.
If the screen stays black immediately after creation, do not rebuild the rectangle first. Check MCEF loading and the client log; WebDisplays cannot render page content without the Chromium backend.

Portable and connected features
The Fabric port README also documents a MinePad portable browser and a Linker used to connect peripherals. These are features of that port’s documented feature set, not evidence that a Forge installation contains the same blocks. Verify the loader and mod line before looking for either item.

The Fabric setup documentation identifies config/webdisplays.json as the configuration file and requires Java 17 or newer. Keep a copy of this file before changing settings so you can restore a known-good configuration.
For Forge, use the Java version required by your selected Minecraft and Forge installation, then confirm that the MCEF build supports that runtime. Do not treat the Fabric port’s Java 17 requirement as a guarantee for every Forge combination; loader, Minecraft and MCEF compatibility still controls the result.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Keeping a stable server
- Save the server, client and configuration backups before changing WebDisplays or MCEF.
- Test updates on a copy of the world before applying them to a public server.
- Record the exact Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, WebDisplays jar and MCEF build in your server notes.
- Distribute one tested client profile to players so everyone receives the same dependency set.
- When diagnosing a failure, change one component at a time and preserve the startup log that first shows the error.
The practical choice is straightforward: use the official Forge 1.20.1 release when you want the project’s maintained distribution, or use the separate Fabric port only when your server is already committed to Fabric and you can meet its Java, Fabric API and Fabric-specific MCEF requirements.
