To install USB Loader GX, you need a soft-modded Wii with the Homebrew Channel and cIOS already installed. Copy the loader’s apps folder to the root of a FAT32 SD card or USB device, then launch it from the Homebrew Channel. A System Menu channel or forwarder is optional; neither replaces the required homebrew setup.
Check your console and prerequisites
First identify the platform: an original Wii and a Wii U running its vWii environment use different cIOS packages. USB Loader GX’s project README gives separate examples for each. The project’s installation guide requires a soft-modded console with the Homebrew Channel and the latest cIOS; its README also lists d2x cIOS installation as a prerequisite.
If those components are not installed, stop here and follow a current, platform-specific guide for your console. The USB Loader GX installation pages assume they are in place rather than explaining a complete modification process for every Wii model.
Copy USB Loader GX to your device
- Download the current USB Loader GX package from the project releases page.
- Extract the package on your computer and copy its
appsfolder to the root of your SD card or USB device. “Root” means the top level of the device, not a folder nested inside another folder. - Check that the application folder is present at
apps/usbloader_gx. Keep that folder on the device: the installation guide notes it is used for settings and downloads. - Safely eject the device, connect it to the console, and confirm the Homebrew Channel can access it.
The README’s short setup sequence also calls for d2x cIOS. It gives these as platform-specific project examples, not universal settings to apply without checking the current instructions for your environment:
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
| Environment | README package example | Example slot and base |
|---|---|---|
| Wii | d2x-v11-beta3 |
Slot 249, base 56 |
| Wii U vWii | d2x-v11-beta3-vWii |
Slot 249, base 56 |
These are examples stated in the project README, not a substitute for platform-specific cIOS installation guidance. Check the current README before changing or installing cIOS; the project identifies the enhanced repository as the new home for the official version.
Choose storage for the loader and games
Keep two roles distinct: one device or partition can hold the USB Loader GX application files, while storage for game files is a separate setup consideration. The Homebrew Channel recognizes FAT32, and the installation guide recommends retaining a FAT32 partition for broad homebrew compatibility. The loader introduction lists WBFS, FAT32, NTFS, and ext2/3/4 as supported hard-drive formats; that does not mean every Homebrew Channel use case or device setup works identically on each format.

| Format | What the project documentation says | Practical takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | Recognized by Homebrew Channel and recommended by the installation guide for homebrew compatibility; also listed as supported by USB Loader GX. | Best general-purpose choice when the device will hold the loader and other homebrew files. |
| WBFS | Listed as a supported hard-drive format by the USB Loader GX introduction. | Support by the loader does not make it the broad-compatibility choice for Homebrew Channel files. |
| NTFS or ext2/3/4 | Listed as supported by the loader introduction; the installation guide describes some channel or forwarder configurations locating the application folder on other supported USB formats. | Use only with a setup that specifically supports the format; do not assume Homebrew Channel will browse it as it does FAT32. |
The installation guide specifies a USB 2.0 hard drive or flash drive for USB storage, with SD/SDHC as optional installation media. It recommends making the first partition FAT32 when using multiple USB partitions. The guide also says the SD device is accessed first and may load the application faster, but does not promise compatibility for any particular drive or card.
Choose how to launch the loader
The easiest route is to open USB Loader GX from the Homebrew Channel. If you want a System Menu icon, the project guide describes two optional alternatives:

| Launch method | Where the executable lives | System Menu icon | Update implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homebrew Channel application | On SD or USB, in the app folder | No | Replace the application files on the device when updating. |
| Full channel | Stored on the Wii’s internal memory | Yes | The installed channel’s executable is not simply updated by replacing files on SD or USB. |
| Forwarder channel | Loaded from SD or USB by the forwarder | Yes | Keep the application files on the external device; the guide advises matching the forwarder’s IOS slot to your settings to prevent IOS reloading. |
A forwarder is only a shortcut; it still depends on the USB Loader GX files being available on the external device. Installing a channel is not necessary to use the application, and the project’s older installation guide should be treated as guidance on these concepts rather than authority for current package versions.
Launch and check basic setup
- Insert the SD card or connect the USB device containing
apps/usbloader_gx. - Open the Homebrew Channel from the Wii Menu.
- Select USB Loader GX and choose Load. If you installed a channel or forwarder instead, launch its icon from the Wii Menu.
USB Loader GX is a homebrew loader, not a source of game files. The project describes it as able to launch Wii and GameCube games from USB or SD, launch homebrew, create backups, and use cheats. Use only game content you are authorized to use.

If USB Loader GX does not appear
- Homebrew Channel shows no application: Check that the folder is named and placed as
apps/usbloader_gxat the device root, and that the Homebrew Channel can access the device. FAT32 is the guide’s general-purpose recommendation for this use. - You are using a forwarder: Confirm the loader application remains on SD or USB. The forwarder does not contain the executable.
- You are setting up cIOS: Recheck that you selected instructions for Wii or vWii as appropriate and consult the current project README. The package examples above should not be treated as a complete installation procedure.
- You are using multiple USB partitions: The installation guide recommends the first partition be FAT32 for homebrew compatibility.
These checks address file placement and the documented setup choices; they do not establish whether a particular drive is compatible or diagnose an individual cIOS or hardware fault.
