To install vMenu, first match the download to your server runtime: use the Enhanced archive for GTA V Enhanced and Enhanced-Legacy for a regular FiveM (Legacy) server. Extract the resource into resources, rename its folder exactly vMenu.Enhanced (including capitalization), load both configuration files, grant the resource filesystem write access, and only then run ensure vMenu.Enhanced. A txAdmin recipe automates those steps for a new server; a manual install gives you more control over an existing one.
This guide covers both routes, administrator permissions, first-start checks, plugin compatibility, and the failure modes that prevent vMenu from starting. Enhanced builds are currently marked alpha/pre-release, so read the release notes and test before using one on a production server.

Choose the correct vMenu build first
vMenu Enhanced is the current server-side menu project for FiveM. The older vMenu v3.9.2 and earlier code is on a legacy branch and is no longer updated. Your server runtime—not the GTA V edition installed on your personal PC—determines which archive you need.
| Server runtime | Archive to download | Result if you choose the other archive |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V Enhanced / FiveM Enhanced | vMenu-Enhanced-v<version>.zip |
Use the Enhanced resource and its Enhanced instructions. |
| Regular FiveM (Legacy) | vMenu-Enhanced-Legacy-v<version>.zip |
The non-Legacy archive refuses to start on a regular Legacy server. |
Do not rename the resource to a shorter name such as vMenu. Every permission and setting path in the supplied configuration is built around the exact directory name vMenu.Enhanced, with a capital M and capital E. vMenu can refuse to start when the case or spelling differs.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
When checking which runtime you have, look at the server build and the platform used by the host, not the game edition shown in your launcher. If you are migrating an existing server, identify the runtime before deleting the old resource. Keep the old copy available until the replacement has passed a clean restart and an in-game permission test.
Prerequisites and where the files belong
- A running FiveM server with access to its server-data directory and
server.cfg. - The matching vMenu archive for Enhanced or Legacy.
- Permission to copy files into the server’s
resourcesfolder and edit the startup configuration. - A plan for who should receive administrative ACE permissions. vMenu exposes administrative and gameplay controls, so broad access should be limited to trusted staff.
After extraction, the path should look like resources/vMenu.Enhanced/. Inside that directory, the config folder must contain both permissions.cfg and configuration.cfg. If your archive created an extra wrapper directory, move the resource contents so that those files are directly under resources/vMenu.Enhanced/config/.
Check the path before editing server.cfg. A common extraction result is resources/vMenu-Enhanced-v1.x/vMenu.Enhanced/; in that case, the resource scanner may not find the directory you reference. The folder that contains the resource manifest and the config directory should itself be named vMenu.Enhanced and placed directly in resources.
Fastest option: install with a txAdmin recipe
txAdmin is the control panel included with FiveM servers. Its vMenu recipes create the resource, startup entries, permissions, and settings together. The Enhanced recipe also includes the routing-buckets, theme-picker, and custom-themes plugins. The Legacy recipe provides the corresponding ready-made vMenu setup for a regular FiveM server.
Enhanced recipe
- Open the new-server deployment flow in txAdmin.
- Choose the vMenu Enhanced recipe if it is listed. If it is not listed, choose Remote URL Template.
- Paste this official recipe URL exactly: https://github.com/TomGrobbe/vMenu/releases/latest/download/txadmin-vmenu-enhanced-recipe.yaml
- Let txAdmin download the recipe and generate
server.cfg. - Review the generated permissions and settings before starting. The generated file explains how plugin permissions are assigned.
Legacy recipe
- In txAdmin’s new-server flow, select the vMenu Legacy recipe, or choose Remote URL Template.
- Paste: https://github.com/TomGrobbe/vMenu/releases/latest/download/txadmin-vmenu-legacy-recipe.yaml
- Allow txAdmin to create the server data and startup configuration.
- Open the generated
server.cfgand inspect the permissions before inviting players.
A recipe is the better starting point for a new server because it keeps the resource name, configuration paths, and startup order consistent. Use the manual procedure below when you already have a server layout or need to control every file yourself.
Do not assume that a successful recipe deployment means every player has access. The recipe creates a working permission structure, but you still need to check which administrator identifier or group is enabled. Review the generated file while the server is private, then give staff only the ACE entries their duties require.
Manual installation on FiveM Enhanced
1. Download and extract the Enhanced archive
- Download the latest release archive named
vMenu-Enhanced-v<version>.zip. - Extract it into the server’s
resourcesdirectory. - Rename the extracted directory to exactly
vMenu.Enhanced. Check capitalization in your file manager; Linux hosts are case-sensitive. - Confirm that
resources/vMenu.Enhanced/config/permissions.cfgandresources/vMenu.Enhanced/config/configuration.cfgexist.
Do not use the archive with “Legacy” in its name for an Enhanced runtime. Conversely, do not use this archive on a regular FiveM server.
Keep the version number in your own deployment notes even if the directory name is normalized to vMenu.Enhanced. The normalized directory is required for ACE and configuration paths, while the version record tells you exactly which release to restore if an update causes a problem.
2. Add the startup entries in the right order
Open server.cfg and place all vMenu setup lines before the resource is started. Use this block, preserving the spelling and punctuation:

exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/permissions.cfg
exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/configuration.cfg
add_filesystem_permission vMenu.Enhanced write vMenu.Enhanced
ensure vMenu.Enhanced
The first two commands load permissions and settings. FiveM Enhanced blocks resource disk writes by default; add_filesystem_permission grants vMenu write access to its own folder so it can save what the configuration expects. The final command starts the resource. If ensure appears first, vMenu starts before its settings and write permission are available, so the menu may not open and changes may not persist.
Keep the four lines together while troubleshooting. Do not put an ensure command in an earlier section of server.cfg and the exec lines later in the file. The order is evaluated during startup, so visual proximity is less important than the actual command order.
3. Add role-sync permissions when an integration needs them
If another resource will add or remove principals for you, add these ACE grants as well:
add_ace resource.vMenu.Enhanced command.add_principal allow
add_ace resource.vMenu.Enhanced command.remove_principal allow
These lines are for integrations that manage groups. They are not a substitute for assigning your own administrator ACEs in permissions.cfg.
Only add these grants when a trusted role-sync integration actually needs them. They allow the vMenu resource to change principals, so leaving them enabled for an unknown or untrusted resource expands the administrative surface of the server.

1. Use the Legacy archive
- Download
vMenu-Enhanced-Legacy-v<version>.zip. - Extract it into
resources. - Rename the resulting directory to
vMenu.Enhanced, even though the server runtime is Legacy. - Verify that the two configuration files are under
resources/vMenu.Enhanced/config/.
The Legacy guide specifically requires the archive whose filename contains “Legacy.” The other archive refuses to start on a regular FiveM server.
The folder name does not change to vMenu.Legacy. The Legacy archive and the Legacy runtime determine compatibility; the resource directory still has to remain exactly vMenu.Enhanced so the supplied ACE and configuration references resolve.
2. Load configuration, grant writes, then ensure the resource
Put the same four lines in server.cfg, in this order and before any later startup logic that depends on vMenu:
exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/permissions.cfg
exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/configuration.cfg
add_filesystem_permission vMenu.Enhanced write vMenu.Enhanced
ensure vMenu.Enhanced
The Legacy runtime still needs the write permission because vMenu must save inside its own resource directory. Keeping the exact resource name also keeps every path and ACE reference consistent between the two runtimes.

Give yourself vMenu permissions safely
vMenu uses FiveM ACE permissions. The resource can be running correctly while your account still sees no usable menus if your identifier or group is not granted the relevant ACE entries.
- Open the
permissions.cfgthat the recipe generated or the archive supplied. - Find the administrator group and identifier entries in that file.
- Replace the example identifier with the identifier you intend to administer, or add your identifier to the administrator group using the file’s existing syntax.
- Keep the ACE entries that grant vMenu features attached to that trusted group or identifier. Do not give broad permissions to a public group.
- Save the file, restart the server, and test with the same account. A reconnect is required after a restart so the client receives the updated permission state.
Use the generated file as the authority for permission names and grouping: it reflects the release and recipe you installed. Avoid copying a permissions file from an unrelated vMenu version, because names and available features can change. If a role-sync plugin manages principals, retain the two command.add_principal and command.remove_principal grants only for that integration and only on a resource you trust.
Permission troubleshooting should distinguish authentication from authorization. If the server console reports that vMenu started but the menu is empty or options are hidden, the resource is loaded and your ACE assignment is the likely issue. If the console cannot load the resource or cannot resolve a configuration path, fix the archive, directory, or startup order first.
Verify the installation in-game
- Restart the FiveM server after saving
server.cfgandpermissions.cfg. - Join the server with the identifier that has administrator ACEs.
- Press M. This is the documented first check for the Legacy setup and a practical confirmation for Enhanced as well.
- Open a few menus that your assigned group should allow. Confirm that a harmless setting change persists after reconnecting if your configuration is intended to save it.
If the menu opens but options are missing, the resource is probably running and the issue is permission scope rather than installation. Recheck the group or identifier assignment in permissions.cfg instead of reinstalling the resource.
Perform the first test with only staff present. This makes it easier to confirm that the correct identifier received the intended ACEs and that no public group inherited administrator access accidentally. Once the test succeeds, reconnect with a normal player account to verify that restricted menus remain restricted.
Troubleshoot startup and permission failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| vMenu refuses to start immediately | Wrong archive for the runtime | Enhanced servers need the archive without “Legacy”; regular FiveM servers need vMenu-Enhanced-Legacy. |
| The resource is found but configuration paths fail | Folder name or capitalization is wrong | Rename the directory to exactly vMenu.Enhanced and verify every startup path uses that spelling. |
| The menu does not open after a restart | Configuration was not loaded before startup, or your account lacks ACEs | Place both exec lines before ensure, then inspect the administrator entries in permissions.cfg. |
| Settings cannot be saved | Enhanced filesystem protection is blocking writes | Put add_filesystem_permission vMenu.Enhanced write vMenu.Enhanced before ensure. |
| Role synchronization cannot change groups | The integration lacks principal-management ACEs | Add the two add_ace resource.vMenu.Enhanced command... lines and verify the integration is trusted. |
| Some options are absent while the menu opens | Permission group does not include those features | Adjust the assigned group or identifier in the generated/example permissions file; do not grant every ACE by default. |
| Everything worked until an update | Release behavior or required FXServer version changed | Read the release notes, compare the required runtime, and restore your backed-up configuration if necessary. |
When diagnosing, check the startup console in this order: resource name, archive/runtime match, existence of both configuration files, ordering of the four lines, and ACE assignment. This sequence separates a load failure from a permissions problem without changing several variables at once.
If you have edited several files, temporarily return to the known-good generated configuration or archive example, then reapply one change at a time. Avoid changing the folder name to make it “match” a command; the command paths and ACE references must match the fixed name vMenu.Enhanced instead.
Plugins and runtime compatibility
Enhanced vMenu accepts plugins as separate FiveM resources. A plugin adds its own menus while the server is running; it does not patch vMenu’s files. Keep each plugin in its own resource directory and start it according to that plugin’s instructions.

- A C# plugin must be built for FiveM Legacy when it is used on a Legacy server.
- Review each plugin’s permissions in the generated configuration before exposing its menus to staff.
The Enhanced txAdmin recipe includes routing-buckets, theme-picker, and custom-themes plugins. A manual installation does not automatically add those extras; install and configure them separately if you need them.

Because plugins are separate resources, a vMenu update does not automatically update them. Record which plugin versions you use and test their menus after changing the core resource. On a Legacy server, confirm the build target of every C# plugin specifically; Lua, JavaScript, and TypeScript do not have that Legacy-only C# restriction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Enhanced versus Legacy, and recipe versus manual setup
| Decision | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced runtime | Servers running GTA V Enhanced / FiveM Enhanced | Current feature line, but releases are labeled alpha/pre-release and can include breaking changes. |
| Legacy runtime | Regular FiveM servers | Requires the Legacy archive; the non-Legacy archive will not start. |
| txAdmin recipe | New server or anyone who wants generated permissions and settings | Fast and consistent, but you should still review the generated files before granting access. |
| Manual installation | Existing servers or administrators who need exact startup and permission control | More control, with more opportunities to mistype the folder name or startup order. |
Both routes depend on the same four operational requirements: the correct archive, the exact vMenu.Enhanced directory, configuration commands before ensure, and filesystem write permission. ACE permissions then determine which people can use which features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical choice is therefore about deployment style, not a different permission model. A recipe reduces typing and creates the related plugins; a manual install is preferable when an existing server.cfg already has a controlled startup sequence. Either method still requires you to inspect the generated or supplied configuration and test with the intended administrator account.
Updates, backups, and production readiness
Current Enhanced releases are marked alpha/pre-release, with warnings about incomplete features and breaking changes. One listed build requires a special FXServer version. Treat the release notes as part of the installation procedure rather than assuming every build is drop-in compatible.
- Pin the specific release you deploy instead of replacing it blindly with the newest archive.
- Back up
permissions.cfgandconfiguration.cfgbefore updating. - Test an update on a staging server, including menu access, saved settings, plugins, and role synchronization.
- Keep the previous resource directory until the new build has started successfully and your staff can use the required features.
- If an update breaks startup, restore the previous resource and configuration, then investigate the release requirements before trying again.
For a new server, the txAdmin recipe is the least error-prone first deployment. For an established server, the manual method is safe when you preserve the exact resource name and startup order. In either case, verify with an administrator account by pressing M after a clean restart.
Before promoting an Enhanced release to production, check whether that build requires a particular FXServer version. A release can be correctly extracted and configured yet still fail because the server artifact is not the one the release expects. Keep the previous resource and configuration available so rollback does not require rebuilding the server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which vMenu download should I use for my FiveM server?
Use vMenu-Enhanced-v<version>.zip on FiveM Enhanced. Use vMenu-Enhanced-Legacy-v<version>.zip on a regular FiveM Legacy server. The non-Legacy archive refuses to start on a Legacy runtime.
What folder name does vMenu require?
The extracted resource directory must be named exactly vMenu.Enhanced, including the capital M and capital E. Do not rename it to vMenu or vMenu.Legacy.
What lines belong in server.cfg?
Place these lines before the resource starts: exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/permissions.cfg, exec @vMenu.Enhanced/config/configuration.cfg, add_filesystem_permission vMenu.Enhanced write vMenu.Enhanced, and ensure vMenu.Enhanced.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
Why does vMenu refuse to start?
First check the archive/runtime match, then the exact case-sensitive folder name, the two files under resources/vMenu.Enhanced/config/, and the order of the startup lines. Using the Enhanced archive on Legacy is a documented startup failure.

How do I give myself vMenu permissions?
Edit the generated or example permissions.cfg, replace its example identifier with yours or add your identifier to the intended administrator group, restart the server, and reconnect. ACE entries determine which menus and features you can use.
Why does the menu open but show too few options?
The resource is likely running, but your ACE group or identifier lacks those feature permissions. Adjust the relevant group in permissions.cfg rather than reinstalling vMenu or granting every ACE to everyone.
Do I need the filesystem permission line on Legacy?
Yes. Use add_filesystem_permission vMenu.Enhanced write vMenu.Enhanced before ensure vMenu.Enhanced on both Enhanced and Legacy installations so vMenu can write to its resource folder.
Can I install vMenu with txAdmin?
Yes. Use the matching Enhanced or Legacy recipe in txAdmin, or choose Remote URL Template and paste the official recipe URL. txAdmin generates the resource, settings, permissions, and startup configuration; review those files before opening the server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which plugins work on Enhanced and Legacy?
Lua, JavaScript, and TypeScript plugins work on both runtimes. A C# plugin used on Legacy must be built for FiveM Legacy. The Enhanced txAdmin recipe includes routing-buckets, theme-picker, and custom-themes plugins.
Is vMenu Enhanced production-ready?
Current Enhanced releases are labeled alpha/pre-release and may contain incomplete features or breaking changes. Read each release note, check any required FXServer version, back up your configuration, and test updates before production deployment.
The Bottom Line
Install the archive that matches the server runtime, place it directly in resources, and name the directory exactly vMenu.Enhanced. Load both config files and grant filesystem write access before ensure vMenu.Enhanced, then assign ACE permissions to a trusted administrator identifier and verify with M. txAdmin is the quickest route for a new server; manual installation is better when you need precise control. Because Enhanced releases are alpha/pre-release, pin tested versions, keep backups, and read release notes before updating.
