One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe reliable way to install WHMCS 9.0 on a Linux VPS is to prepare a traditional LAMP stack first: Linux, Apache 2.x, PHP 8.2 or 8.3, ionCube Loader, and MySQL. Create the database with installation-time privileges, upload the WHMCS files, run the browser installer, remove the installation directory, and then validate HTTPS, cron, permissions, email, and a test billing transaction.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
You do not need a hosting control panel. Root or equivalent administrative access is required for server preparation and normally for installing ionCube Loader. Apache is the validated web server; NGINX can work in some configurations but receives limited support from WHMCS.

What you need before installing WHMCS
WHMCS 9.0 is a self-hosted application. The VPS, operating system, web server, PHP runtime, database, TLS certificate, backups, and firewall are your responsibility. Confirm every item below before uploading the application.
| Component | WHMCS 9.0 requirement | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux | Use a currently supported distribution supplied by your VPS provider and keep it patched. |
| Web server | Apache 2.x is the validated path | Use Apache for the least troubleshooting. NGINX deployments may work, but WHMCS offers limited assistance. |
| PHP | 8.2 or 8.3 | Run the same supported version for Apache, CLI checks, and cron jobs. |
| PHP memory | 64 MB minimum; 128 MB recommended | Set at least 128 MB when your VPS has the available RAM. |
| Database | MySQL 5.2 minimum; MySQL 8.x recommended | Choose MySQL 8.x unless another compatibility requirement forces an older release. |
| PHP extensions | cURL with SSL, GD2, IMAP, ionCube Loader, JSON, PDO, PDO_MySQL compiled with mysqlnd, Reflection, and XML | Check the web-server PHP environment, not only the CLI environment. |
| Access | Root or equivalent administrative access | Use a sudo-enabled administrator for routine work and reserve root for tasks that require it. |
| License and files | A WHMCS license and the matching release download | Download the release that matches the license and your planned PHP version. |
Keep a written record of the PHP version, loaded extensions, database host and port, document root, cron PHP binary, and administrator account. Those details make later upgrades and incident recovery much easier.

Choose and prepare the Linux VPS
Evaluate the infrastructure, not just the monthly price
Compare VPS offers on root access, supported Linux distributions, CPU allocation, memory, storage, snapshots, backup retention, data-center location, support quality, control-panel availability, and total recurring cost. A low entry price is useful only if the instance has enough memory for Apache, PHP, MySQL, scheduled jobs, and your customer workload.
DigitalOcean documents shared-CPU Droplets starting at $4 per month on the page checked October 15, 2026, along with dedicated-CPU options, several Linux distributions, root access, and cPanel-capable configurations. Pricing, stock, geography, and eligibility can change, so verify the provider’s current page before ordering. The $4 figure is a displayed starting price, not a guarantee for every region or configuration.
Provision with a recoverable layout
- Select a current Linux image and a data center close to most administrators and customers while meeting your data-residency requirements.
- Choose enough RAM for the operating system, Apache workers, PHP processes, MySQL, mail-related jobs, and monitoring. Treat 128 MB as the WHMCS PHP setting, not as the VPS’s total memory requirement.
- Enable provider snapshots or an equivalent backup before making configuration changes. A snapshot is not a substitute for a separate database backup.
- Assign a stable public IP or DNS strategy and decide the final hostname before requesting TLS certificates.
- Record the provider console or recovery procedure. You need an out-of-band path if an SSH or firewall change locks you out.
Harden the server before publishing the site
Immediately update the operating system using its distribution’s supported package manager. Create a named, non-root administrator with sudo rights, install an SSH key, and test a second SSH session before disabling password login or root SSH access. Enable a host firewall that allows SSH from your administration network and permits HTTP and HTTPS only when the web server is ready.
Hardening commands differ between distributions, so follow the chosen distribution’s documentation rather than copying an Ubuntu, Debian, or CentOS command onto another system. The important sequence is consistent: update, create the administrator, install keys, verify recovery access, configure the firewall, and only then expose the public web service.
Build the supported Apache and PHP stack
Install Apache 2.x and select one PHP version
Install Apache 2.x and PHP 8.2 or 8.3 from repositories appropriate for the selected Linux distribution. Do not install multiple active PHP versions unless you have a clear method for selecting the version used by Apache and cron. A mismatch can make the browser installer pass while scheduled tasks fail later.
After installation, check the CLI version with php -v. Also create a temporary, access-controlled PHP information check or use your server’s PHP-FPM/Apache diagnostics to confirm what the web server actually loads. Remove any diagnostic page after testing because it exposes configuration details.

WHMCS 9.0 requires cURL with SSL, GD2, IMAP, ionCube Loader, JSON, PDO, PDO_MySQL compiled with mysqlnd, Reflection, and XML. Package names vary by Linux distribution and PHP minor version. After installing them, verify the active runtime with php -m and inspect the web-server runtime separately.
Rank #2
- cURL with SSL: required for secure outbound requests to services and APIs.
- GD2: used for image and graphic processing.
- IMAP: needed for mail-related functions where configured.
- JSON, PDO, PDO_MySQL, Reflection, and XML: core application and database interfaces.
- mysqlnd: WHMCS specifies PDO_MySQL compiled with the native MySQL driver.
Restart Apache, or PHP-FPM if your design uses it, after changing PHP modules or configuration. Recheck the web runtime instead of assuming a successful package installation changed the process already serving requests.
Set PHP memory and related limits
Set memory_limit to at least 64 MB; WHMCS recommends 128 MB. A higher value may be appropriate for larger catalogs, reports, imports, or modules, but it does not create RAM that the VPS does not have. Keep upload and execution limits consistent with the size of the WHMCS release and the administrative tasks you intend to run.
Check which configuration file Apache uses and which file the CLI uses. The paths can differ. This distinction matters for cron jobs and command-line installation, because a correct browser setting does not automatically apply to CLI PHP.
Install ionCube Loader
ionCube Loader is mandatory for WHMCS. Install the loader build that matches the active PHP major and minor version and the server architecture. Linux installation normally requires root access unless the hosting provider has already enabled it.
After installation, confirm that ionCube Loader appears in the web-server PHP information and in the CLI module list when command-line WHMCS tasks will run. Restart the relevant service after editing the PHP configuration. If WHMCS reports that ionCube is missing, check the loaded configuration file and PHP version before reinstalling anything; the most common cause is loading a loader compiled for a different PHP version.
Create the MySQL database correctly
Use a dedicated database and account
Create a database exclusively for this WHMCS installation and a separate database user with a long, randomly generated password. Keep the database on the same private network or host when practical, and restrict remote access to the application server rather than opening MySQL to the entire internet.
During installation, WHMCS documents these privileges: ALTER, DROP, LOCK TABLES, CREATE, INDEX, SELECT, DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE. Grant them to the WHMCS account for the installation phase, then test the connection with the exact hostname, port, database name, username, and password you will enter in the installer.

Reduce privileges after the installer finishes
Installation-time privileges are broader than routine operating privileges. After a successful installation and an initial backup, remove ALTER, CREATE, DROP, and INDEX if your operating procedure permits it. Retain the privileges required for normal operation and for documented updates and module activation or deactivation. Before every upgrade, follow the current WHMCS procedure for temporarily restoring any permissions it requires.
Disable MySQL Strict Mode
WHMCS documents MySQL Strict Mode as unsupported and warns that STRICT_TRANS_TABLES or ERROR_FOR_DIVISION_BY_ZERO can cause serious problems. Check the active SQL mode on the database server, remove those modes according to your MySQL version’s configuration method, restart MySQL if required, and verify the resulting mode with a fresh session. Apply the change deliberately and document it, because a later package upgrade can replace configuration files.
Download, upload, and place the WHMCS files
Obtain the licensed release
Purchase or activate the WHMCS license and download the release that you intend to run. Keep the original ZIP in a protected administrator-only location so you can verify the version and recover the files without downloading an untrusted copy.
Choose the document-root layout
Upload the ZIP to the site’s document root and extract it there, or upload the unzipped WHMCS directory through a secure transfer method. The official guide lists cPanel File Manager as one upload option, but a control panel is not required; SFTP or another authenticated administrator workflow is also suitable.
Keep the WHMCS directory name distinct from admin. WHMCS uses an admin folder for the Admin Area by default, so naming the application directory admin creates an avoidable collision. If you change the Admin Area directory later, update your internal documentation and bookmarks.
Set ownership and permissions so the web-server account can read the application and write only to directories that WHMCS explicitly requires. Do not make the entire document root world-writable. Preserve the archive outside the public document root or delete it after verifying the extraction.
Run the browser installer
The browser workflow is the simplest supported path for most administrators.
Rank #4
- Point DNS at the VPS and configure the Apache virtual host for the intended hostname. Obtain and install a TLS certificate before entering production credentials.
- Open the WHMCS installation URL in a browser. If the requirement check fails, stop and correct the reported PHP version, extension, memory, ionCube, database, or permission issue before continuing.
- Enter the WHMCS license details exactly as issued. A license or hostname mismatch must be resolved with the licensing account rather than bypassed.
- Enter the database host, port if nonstandard, database name, username, password, and the table-prefix choice requested by the installer. Use the dedicated account created for this installation.
- Allow the installer to create and populate the schema. Monitor the page for SQL errors instead of refreshing repeatedly, which can leave an incomplete installation.
- Create the first administrator with a unique password and enable the strongest available authentication controls after the initial login.
- When the installer reports success, delete the installation folder exactly as instructed. Leaving it accessible can allow someone to rerun or interfere with setup.
- Review file and directory permissions, then sign out and test the public home page, client area, and Admin Area over HTTPS.
Keep the installation URL, database credentials, and administrator recovery details out of public tickets and shell history. Store them in your approved secrets system.
Use the command-line installer when you need repeatability
WHMCS describes the command-line method for advanced administrators who are comfortable with WHMCS, database management, and the shell. It is useful for repeatable deployments and restricted environments, but it does not bypass compatibility requirements.
- Download and unzip the release on a secured workstation or server.
- Verify Linux, the web server, PHP 8.2 or 8.3, MySQL compatibility, required extensions, memory, and the matching ionCube Loader.
- Upload the files to the final document root and apply the intended ownership and permissions.
- Prepare the database and installation-time privileges described earlier. Confirm that MySQL Strict Mode is not enabled.
- Supply the license, database, administrator, and path configuration through the command-line inputs required by the release.
- Run the WHMCS installation command with the same PHP binary and configuration that your scheduled jobs will use.
- Check the command output for a completed schema and configuration, remove the installation directory if it remains, and perform the same HTTPS and functional tests as a browser installation.
Do not assume a command-line success proves the web server is correct. Apache may use a different PHP configuration, user, or file ownership, so validate both execution paths.

Check the three user-facing areas
- Load the public home page over HTTPS and confirm there are no mixed-content or certificate errors.
- Register or sign in to a test client account and verify that the client area can display profile, service, invoice, and support information.
- Sign in to the Admin Area through the non-default path if you changed it, and confirm that dashboard pages load without PHP warnings.
Test cron with the correct PHP binary
Configure WHMCS cron according to the release documentation and run it manually once under the same account that will execute the schedule. Confirm that the cron PHP version and loaded extensions match the web-server environment. WHMCS warns that a CLI PHP mismatch can cause problems even when the browser interface works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect the cron output and application activity for a complete run. A silent scheduler is not proof of success; verify that a test task, such as a controlled invoice or notification action, reaches its expected state.
Exercise email and billing paths safely
Configure outbound mail and send a message to an address you control. Check the mail headers, delivery, and bounce handling. Then create a non-production client, product, invoice, and payment or gateway test according to your gateway’s sandbox rules. Confirm invoice creation, payment status, receipt or notification behavior, and the corresponding Admin Area record before opening the system to customers.
Review permissions and backups
Ensure application files are not writable by unrelated system users. Keep only the directories that WHMCS requires writable by the web-server account. Take a database backup and a provider snapshot, and verify that each can be located and restored in a test or recovery environment.
Best Value
Troubleshoot common installation failures
“ionCube Loader is missing” or an encoded-file error
Confirm the PHP version used by Apache, install the matching ionCube build, enable it in that PHP configuration, restart the service, and recheck the web runtime. If the CLI check passes but the browser fails, Apache is loading a different php.ini or PHP binary. If the browser passes but cron fails, install or enable ionCube for the CLI PHP version used by the scheduler.
The installer rejects PHP or an extension
Run php -v and php -m, then compare those results with the web-server PHP information. Install the missing extension for the exact PHP 8.2 or 8.3 version, restart the service, and repeat the check. Do not change to an unsupported PHP release merely to satisfy another application on the same VPS; isolate that application or use a separate instance.
Database connection or permission errors
Check the hostname, port, database name, username, password, and whether the account is allowed to connect from the web server’s host. Confirm the installation-time privileges, table-prefix value, and that MySQL is running. If schema creation fails midway, remove the incomplete database objects only after taking notes, correct the cause, and rerun the installer with a clean database.
SQL errors mentioning strict mode
Inspect the server’s SQL mode in a new connection. Remove the unsupported strict modes documented by WHMCS, restart MySQL if necessary, and verify the setting before starting again. A mode change made in only one client session will not fix the server configuration used by WHMCS.
HTTP 500 errors or blank pages
Read the Apache and PHP error logs, then check PHP memory, required extensions, ionCube, file ownership, and the active PHP configuration. A blank page after deployment is often a fatal PHP error hidden by production error settings; use logs rather than enabling verbose errors for public visitors.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Cron runs but nothing happens
Run the scheduled command manually as the cron user, print the PHP version and module list from that command, and compare them with the web runtime. Correct the binary path, working directory, permissions, and environment. Check the cron log and WHMCS activity for a completed run before changing the schedule frequency.
Admin Area cannot be found
Confirm that the WHMCS directory was not named admin, verify the Apache document root and rewrite configuration, and check whether the Admin Area directory was renamed during setup. Use the actual configured path rather than assuming the default.
When a control panel or NGINX makes sense
cPanel can simplify file management, virtual hosts, certificates, and PHP selection on a compatible VPS, but it is optional. The underlying WHMCS requirements do not disappear: you still need supported PHP, extensions, ionCube, MySQL, memory, permissions, and a working cron subsystem.
NGINX may serve WHMCS in some architectures, often with PHP-FPM, but WHMCS identifies Apache on Linux as the validated route and provides limited support for NGINX. Choose NGINX only when your team already operates it confidently, has tested the required rewrites and PHP handling, and accepts that troubleshooting may fall outside WHMCS’s supported path.

A practical go-live checklist
- Linux VPS patched, backed up, and reachable through a tested recovery path.
- Non-root sudo administrator and SSH-key access working.
- Firewall allows only required administration and web ports.
- Apache 2.x serving the intended hostname over HTTPS.
- PHP 8.2 or 8.3 selected consistently for web requests and cron.
- Required extensions loaded, including PDO_MySQL with mysqlnd.
- PHP memory at least 64 MB, preferably 128 MB.
- Matching ionCube Loader working in both required execution paths.
- MySQL 8.x selected where compatible, with Strict Mode settings checked.
- Database created with installation privileges and routine privileges reduced afterward.
- Installation directory deleted and file ownership reviewed.
- Home page, client area, Admin Area, cron, email, invoice, and sandbox payment tested.
- Database backup and VPS snapshot completed, with restoration steps documented.
The Bottom Line
For WHMCS 9.0, use a Linux VPS running Apache 2.x, PHP 8.2 or 8.3 with the required extensions and matching ionCube Loader, and preferably MySQL 8.x. Prepare and harden the server first, grant broader database privileges only during installation, remove the installer directory, then verify cron, permissions, HTTPS, email, and a complete test billing flow before going live.
