How to Install Windows on a Steam Deck for Games With Unsupported Anti-Cheat

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Installing Windows can let a Steam Deck run games whose anti-cheat depends on Windows components that SteamOS and Proton cannot provide. It is not a universal fix: Windows may remove the operating-system incompatibility, but publisher blocks, account restrictions, anti-cheat configuration, and the Deck’s hardware limits still apply.

Back up your files before changing partitions. Valve’s Windows guidance warns that its supported installation process can wipe the Deck, and Valve currently does not provide SteamOS dual-boot through that official workflow. Treat the installation as a system change, not a routine game download.

What Windows changes—and what it does not

SteamOS runs Windows games through Proton, a compatibility layer. Valve says Proton supports some common anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but support is not automatic. Developers must enable and configure the service for each title, and kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported by Proton.

Valve’s Deck Verified system defines “Unsupported” as “The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck.” A title can therefore be Unsupported because its anti-cheat cannot run under Proton, because the developer has not enabled a supported configuration, or because of another compatibility failure. Windows addresses only the first category when the game’s Windows anti-cheat path is supported.

Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

When Windows is a sensible workaround

  • The game’s Windows version is supported by its publisher and its anti-cheat service.
  • The Steam Deck’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage and network performance meet the game’s Windows requirements.
  • You accept the extra driver, update and troubleshooting work compared with SteamOS.

When staying on SteamOS is preferable

  • The title uses Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye and its developer has enabled Proton support. Valve documents support for both, although BattlEye titles require title-specific configuration.
  • You rely on SteamOS’s handheld interface, suspend/resume behavior, console-style updates and Valve’s integrated controls.
  • The game is Unsupported for a reason unrelated to the operating system, such as a missing launcher feature, account restriction or hardware requirement.

Before you install: model, backup and a recovery plan

Identify the Deck

Confirm whether you have an LCD or OLED Steam Deck before downloading drivers. Valve’s Windows Resources page provides model-specific packages; using the wrong graphics, wireless or audio package can leave devices misconfigured.

Back up anything you cannot replace

Copy screenshots, downloaded captures, configuration files, non-cloud saves and personal documents from internal storage. Verify that cloud saves have synchronized by opening the relevant games in SteamOS and checking their last sync. If you plan to repartition the internal drive, assume every existing partition and user file could be lost.

Keep recovery media available

Prepare a SteamOS recovery image or another recovery route before starting. You need a way to restore SteamOS if Windows installation fails, a partition becomes unreadable or you decide the Windows setup is not worth the maintenance. A second computer is useful for creating installation media and downloading drivers if the Deck cannot connect to the internet after setup.

Choose an installation method

There are three practical approaches. They differ sharply in data-loss risk, speed, switching convenience and how easily you can return to SteamOS.

Method Data-loss risk Storage and endurance Switching operating systems Updates and drivers SteamOS access Reversibility
Replace SteamOS on the internal SSD High: the supported Windows workflow may wipe the Deck Usually faster than removable media, subject to the installed SSD One operating system at a time; reboot to change Install and maintain Windows and Deck drivers manually Unavailable until SteamOS is restored Restore from recovery media or reinstall SteamOS
Install Windows on removable storage Low for internal data when you leave the SSD untouched, but the removable drive is still at risk Depends on the card or external drive; sustained Windows updates and game writes can be demanding Shut down and boot from the selected removable device Windows still needs Valve’s driver packages and normal updates SteamOS remains on the internal drive Remove the device and continue using the internal SteamOS installation
Community dual-boot on the internal drive Medium to high: repartitioning can erase SteamOS or personal data Both systems share internal storage; game space and update space must be planned Boot selection is available after configuring both systems Two operating systems, two update paths and more recovery points Available when selected at boot Remove one partition and repair the remaining boot setup

Valve’s FAQ confirms that the Deck supports multi-boot and booting from microSD. That establishes firmware capability, not an endorsement of every community dual-boot procedure. Valve separately says SteamOS dual-boot is not currently available through its official Windows installation workflow. If you need the least ambiguous support path, use one operating system at a time and keep recovery media ready.

What you need

  • A Steam Deck with enough free storage for Windows, updates and the target game. Windows and large games need working space beyond their nominal installation sizes.
  • Legitimate Windows installation media and activation rights. Do not use pirated images, cracked activators or modified kernels; BattlEye explicitly rejects hacked-kernel configurations.
  • A separate computer to create the installer and download Valve’s current Windows drivers.
  • A USB-C adapter or hub if your Deck needs USB-A for the installer, keyboard or mouse.
  • A keyboard and mouse for Windows Setup. The installer may not initially provide the same touch and controller behavior as SteamOS.
  • A reliable internet connection for Windows Update, driver packages, game launchers and anti-cheat service updates.

Step-by-step Windows installation

1. Create legitimate installation media

On another computer, create Windows installation media using Microsoft’s current installer and a suitable USB drive. Keep the product key or digital entitlement associated with your edition. Do not alter the Windows image to bypass security checks or inject an unofficial kernel.

2. Connect the installer and input devices

Connect the USB installer through the Deck’s USB-C port, using a hub or adapter when necessary. Attach a keyboard and mouse. If you are installing to removable storage, connect that device as well and identify it carefully; selecting the wrong disk in Setup can destroy existing data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Open the Deck boot manager or firmware setup

Power the Deck down completely, then use its boot-manager or BIOS procedure to select the Windows installer. Follow Valve’s current hardware instructions for the exact button sequence. Choose the external installer rather than the internal SteamOS drive when the menu lists multiple devices.

4. Complete Windows Setup cautiously

Windows Setup can appear sideways or in portrait orientation on the Deck. That is a display-orientation issue, not evidence that the installer is corrupt. Continue with language, edition, account and network screens, then stop at the disk and partition screen to verify the destination.

If you are replacing SteamOS, understand that deleting or formatting its partitions removes the operating system and any unbacked-up files. If you are using removable storage, select only the intended external device. For community dual-boot, follow the specific project’s partition instructions and keep a recovery plan; Valve’s official workflow does not currently create this arrangement for you.

Install Valve’s Deck drivers before gaming

After the first Windows desktop appears, use Valve’s official Windows Resources page for your exact LCD or OLED model. Install the available packages for the APU/GPU, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD-card reader, audio and other Deck hardware. Reboot whenever the installer requests it, even if Windows appears usable without restarting.

Verify the basic hardware

  1. Open Windows display settings and correct orientation, resolution and scaling.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi, pair Bluetooth devices and confirm that the SD-card reader detects a test card.
  3. Play a system sound through the Deck speakers and test the headphone output.
  4. Check the built-in controls, buttons, trackpads and any controller software you intend to use.
  5. Test sleep, wake and a full shutdown/startup cycle.
  6. Run Windows Update, restart, and check Device Manager for devices with warning icons.

Do not install the target game until these checks pass. A game can appear to have an anti-cheat problem when the real cause is missing networking, an unrecognized controller, an incomplete graphics driver or a pending Windows restart.

Install and test the anti-cheat game

Use the game’s own launcher and service

Install the game from its legitimate store or launcher, then allow its official anti-cheat component to install from the game’s folder. BattlEye documents that its service may require administrative installation, legitimate Windows, internet access for updates and firewall exceptions. Accepting a launcher prompt without completing the service installation can leave the game unable to start.

Test one title at a time

Launch one game after Windows, drivers and updates are current. Record whether the failure occurs before the launcher, during anti-cheat initialization, at account sign-in or when joining a server. This isolates an operating-system issue from a publisher outage, account restriction or game-specific configuration.

Set realistic expectations

Windows removes the Linux/Proton layer, but it does not override the publisher’s Windows requirements. A game can still refuse to run because its anti-cheat blocks the Deck’s environment, the account is restricted, the launcher is unsupported, required security features are absent, or the hardware cannot deliver an acceptable experience. Valve’s Unsupported label is a moving compatibility assessment, not a promise that installing Windows will change the rating.

BattlEye-specific problems and fixes

Update or connection failures

  • Install all Windows and Deck-driver updates, then reboot.
  • Confirm unrestricted internet access. BattlEye needs connectivity for service updates.
  • Check Windows Firewall and security software for blocked BattlEye launcher or service components; add an exception only when you understand the security impact.
  • Verify the game files through its launcher, then reinstall BattlEye from the game’s own folder with administrative privileges if the service is missing or damaged.

Windows 11 error 1275 or a driver that will not load

BattlEye warns that Microsoft has begun asking some Windows 11 users to enable Hardware-enforced Stack Protection and that, when enabled, the setting can prevent the BattlEye driver from loading. Open Windows Security, navigate to the Core isolation settings, check Hardware-enforced Stack Protection, and follow BattlEye’s current disable-and-reboot instructions if the setting is blocking the game. Microsoft’s behavior and available fixes can change, so recheck the current BattlEye guidance rather than assuming the setting is permanently incompatible.

Configurations BattlEye will not support

  • Test-signing mode
  • Kernel debugging
  • Cracked or illegitimate Windows installations
  • Modified system files or hacked kernels

If service installation remains broken after repair and verification, back up your data before using Windows repair or a clean reinstall. A reinstall can erase the same files you were trying to preserve.

SteamOS versus Windows on a Deck

Consideration SteamOS Windows
Anti-cheat coverage Proton supports some Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye configurations; kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported by Proton Uses the game’s Windows anti-cheat path, subject to publisher support and service requirements
Handheld interface Integrated Steam Deck interface and controls Desktop Windows interface requires additional controller, launcher and scaling setup
Battery and performance tuning Valve-controlled handheld integration Performance and power behavior depend on Windows drivers, updates and game settings
Launchers and subscriptions Limited to services that work through SteamOS and Proton Broad Windows launcher compatibility, subject to each service’s policies
Updates SteamOS and game updates are managed in the Deck experience Windows, Valve drivers, launchers and anti-cheat services have separate update paths
Valve support Primary supported Deck operating environment Valve supplies Windows resources, but the official workflow does not currently provide SteamOS dual-boot

Should you replace SteamOS, use removable storage or dual-boot?

Replace SteamOS when simplicity matters more than reversibility

A single Windows installation avoids boot-menu complexity and gives the operating system the full internal drive. Choose it only after a verified backup and with SteamOS recovery media available. You lose SteamOS until you restore it.

Use removable storage when you want a low-commitment trial

Booting Windows from removable media leaves the internal SteamOS installation intact. It is easier to abandon, but storage speed, endurance and reliability depend on the card or external drive. Windows updates and game writes can be more demanding than ordinary media use, so keep backups of the removable installation and expect more maintenance.

Attempt community dual-boot only when you accept maintenance

Dual-boot preserves both systems but adds partition sizing, bootloader repair and two independent update cycles. Valve’s FAQ confirms multi-boot capability, yet its official Windows workflow does not currently set up SteamOS dual-boot. A firmware update, failed partition change or interrupted installation may require recovery work on either operating system.

A practical decision checklist

  • Is the game Unsupported specifically because its anti-cheat requires Windows or kernel-level components?
  • Has the publisher confirmed that the game and anti-cheat support Windows on the Deck’s hardware?
  • Have you backed up internal and removable storage and tested the backup?
  • Do you have legitimate Windows media, activation rights, a keyboard, mouse and a USB-C adapter or hub?
  • Can you tolerate separate Windows, driver, launcher and anti-cheat updates?
  • Do you have SteamOS recovery media or a tested recovery procedure?

If the answers are yes, Windows is a reasonable compatibility experiment. If the game already works with a Proton-enabled Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye configuration, staying on SteamOS generally avoids unnecessary system changes.
