You can install Wowza Streaming Engine on an Azure virtual machine using a preconfigured Marketplace image, then connect to the server, secure Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, and test playback. Wowza documents separate Windows and Linux quick-starts. The steps below give the documented Windows path in detail; for Linux, use Wowza’s current guide rather than copying Windows-specific commands or file paths.
Before you create the Azure VM
You need an Azure subscription with permission to create virtual machines and configure networking, plus enough familiarity with the guest operating system to administer it. Choose Windows or Linux based on your team’s operating-system skills and tooling; Wowza provides a quick-start for each, but the available guidance does not establish a general performance advantage for either system.
- Decide whether to use an Azure Marketplace image with embedded licensing or bring your own Wowza license (BYOL).
- Choose an Azure region with low latency to the camera or encoder sending the live feed. This is an ingest-location decision, not a universal best region.
- Estimate VM capacity from the stream-processing and transcoding workload you expect. Wowza’s Windows guide warns against the A0 size because it lacks enough CPU resources, but its example sizes are dated guidance, not a universal sizing rule.
- Plan network access before deployment: identify required ingest and playback protocols and ports, and decide which source addresses should be allowed to reach them.
Choose a Marketplace image or BYOL
| Option | What it means | Billing and license considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace image with embedded licensing | Deploy a preconfigured Wowza image through Azure Marketplace. The image is intended to avoid a manual command-line installation. | Wowza describes this route as combining Azure VM runtime, storage, bandwidth, and Wowza usage on a Microsoft bill. Its pricing page describes paid marketplace instances as provider-billed hourly and says an embedded license does not require a separate key. Check the current offer and terms before purchase. |
| Bring your own license (BYOL) | Use an Azure VM with a Wowza license entitlement you obtain separately. | Azure bills infrastructure such as VM runtime, storage, and bandwidth; Wowza may invoice separately for a subscription license. Confirm the current license terms and whether your entitlement covers the intended use. |
Marketplace offers, image versions, and billing terms can change. Verify the offer details in Azure before committing. Wowza’s Windows and Linux guides updated July 22, 2026 identify their latest preconfigured VM image as running Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3; that is a guide-specific version statement, not a guarantee that the same image remains the latest Marketplace offer.
Install the Windows image on Azure
1. Find the Wowza offer and configure the VM
- In the Azure portal, open Azure Marketplace and search for the Wowza Streaming Engine offer. Confirm the current offer description, operating-system version, license model, and billing terms before selecting it.
- Start VM creation and choose the Windows image. Wowza’s Windows guide describes Windows Server 2019 Datacenter; verify the current image version in the portal rather than assuming it is unchanged.
- Select or create a resource group, enter a VM name, and choose the Azure region. Prefer a region with low latency to the camera or encoder that will send the live stream.
- Choose a VM size appropriate to your expected workload. Do not select A0 for the documented Windows path: Wowza warns that it does not provide enough CPU resources. The guide’s other size examples are historical and should not be treated as current sizing recommendations.
- Review the disk and network configuration. Create only the inbound rules needed by your ingest and playback setup. If an encoder sends a stream over UDP, add the specific UDP rule it requires; do not open broad port ranges by default. Where practical, restrict source addresses to the encoder or other trusted systems.
- Review the network security group (NSG) rules and make sure administrative access is limited to the addresses that need it.
2. Connect with Remote Desktop
After Azure reports that the VM is running, connect to Windows using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and the credentials configured during VM creation. Use a controlled administrative workstation and avoid exposing RDP broadly to the internet; restrict its network rule to trusted source IP addresses where possible.

3. Replace the initial Wowza Manager credentials
Wowza’s Windows guide directs administrators to inspect the initial credentials in C:Program Files (x86)Wowza Media SystemsWowza Streaming Engineconfadmin.password and replace the default username and password. Change the credentials before leaving Manager available over a network. For production, configure HTTPS and restrict Manager access to trusted administrative networks instead of leaving an administrative endpoint broadly exposed.
4. Confirm the license state
The Windows quick-start describes a temporary license key preloaded in its image and instructs users on a BYOL route to replace it with their subscription or perpetual key. The embedded-license route is handled differently. Follow the license instructions for the exact Marketplace offer you selected, and confirm in Manager that the server has a valid license before relying on it for ongoing service.

5. Open Manager and test playback
The Windows guide opens Wowza Streaming Engine Manager at http://[public-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager. Replace the bracketed text with the VM’s public IP address. This is the guide’s documented access URL; for production, use HTTPS and limit which clients can reach the management interface.
Use Manager’s Test Players to validate a sample stream and playback. Confirm that the address used for clients is the VM’s public IP, not a private address. Wowza notes that an Azure variable lookup can cause a test player to display a private IP; its Windows guide describes a Wowza property setting to correct that case. If the player cannot connect, check the displayed IP and the relevant Azure NSG and guest firewall rules before changing application settings.

Linux installation: follow Wowza’s current quick-start
Wowza maintains a separate Linux-on-Azure quick-start and describes connecting to the VM over SSH. Its guide updated July 22, 2026 also identifies 4.11.3 as the version in its latest preconfigured image. Because the documented procedure available here does not establish current Linux commands, package steps, or filesystem paths, do not infer those from the Windows instructions. Follow the current Linux guide for the selected image, then apply the same operational principles: protect SSH and Manager access, confirm license status, and test using the VM’s public address.
Secure and operate the Azure deployment
- Restrict administration: Limit RDP or SSH and Manager access to trusted addresses. Use HTTPS for Manager in production rather than leaving the documented HTTP endpoint exposed.
- Keep network rules specific: Allow only the protocols and ports needed by your encoders and viewers. If ingest uses UDP, permit the required UDP traffic and restrict its source where practical.
- Choose capacity for the workload: Region and VM size depend on ingest latency and processing needs. No single VM size is established as correct for every deployment.
- Understand stop versus delete: Stopping a VM and deleting a VM are different actions. Review current Azure billing and public-IP behavior for your resource configuration before stopping or removing resources; storage or other retained resources may have separate billing implications.
- Recheck commercial terms: Marketplace images and licensing arrangements can change. Confirm Azure and Wowza charges, license duration, and included features before deploying a production service.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RDP or SSH cannot connect | The VM is not reachable through its current network rules, the wrong address is being used, or the guest is not ready. | Check that provisioning completed, use the VM’s current public IP, and review the NSG and guest firewall for the specific administration protocol. Limit allowed sources rather than opening access to everyone. |
| An encoder cannot publish to Wowza | The required ingest protocol or port is not allowed, or the encoder is targeting the wrong address. | Confirm the encoder’s configured protocol and destination, then allow only the corresponding inbound traffic in Azure and the guest firewall. For UDP ingest, verify the specific UDP rule required by the encoder. |
| Manager login fails | The initial credentials may still be in use, or the credentials were changed and the new values are not being used. | On the Windows image, inspect the documented confadmin.password file over RDP if needed, replace initial credentials, and use the updated values. Do not leave defaults on an exposed management interface. |
| Test player shows a private IP or fails to play | Azure’s variable lookup may have supplied a private IP, or network rules may block playback. | Compare the test player address with the VM’s public IP. Wowza’s Windows guide documents a property setting for the private-IP lookup issue. Also check the playback protocol’s NSG and guest firewall rules. |
| License warning appears | The selected image may require a separate license key, or the license may not be valid for the chosen route. | Check whether the deployment is BYOL or embedded licensing and follow the current instructions for that offer. For BYOL, install the appropriate Wowza key and verify license status in Manager. |
