Start by identifying where the fault appears. Increasing dropped frames in OBS points first to the connection from your computer to the platform’s ingest server, or to a bitrate that connection cannot sustain. A platform health warning may point to an encoder setting. If broadcaster metrics look normal but viewers buffer, investigate playback on their devices and networks before changing your stream settings.
Use timestamps and trends to connect symptoms with events, then change one likely cause at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a fix helped—and avoids trading away image quality or latency without addressing the actual problem.
Which health metric should you check first?
Check the broadcaster’s encoder and connection indicators, the streaming platform’s health messages, and viewer reports as separate evidence. They describe different parts of the stream path; a warning in one does not automatically identify a fault in another.
| What you see | Where to investigate first | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames are rising, or its connection indicator is yellow or red | The sender-to-ingest network path and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable | OBS says it drops frames to compensate when a connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate. This is not proof that viewers’ playback connections are poor. |
| The platform reports a format, codec, frame-rate, bitrate, keyframe, or primary/backup problem | The specific encoder or stream configuration named in the message | YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room show timestamped errors alongside a Health Indicator. Match the message to the setting it identifies. |
| Viewers report buffering, freezing, or latency while sender-side metrics look normal | Viewer playback, including device, location, and internet connection | Broadcaster metrics can look normal while individual viewers have trouble. Compare reports and test playback separately before changing the encoder. |
OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as evidence of a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server. That identifies the path to investigate, not whether the cause is the local network, router, internet service, route to the server, or another component. How to investigate dropped frames and connection problems
1. Record the symptom and its timing
Note when dropped frames begin, how quickly they increase, the connection indicator, and any coinciding changes—such as a scene change, network activity, or platform warning. Record the configured bitrate and which ingest server you are using. A brief speed test alone cannot establish that the path will sustain a live stream continuously.
2. Test one network change at a time
OBS recommends trying a different ingest server, lowering the video bitrate, or testing another service to help isolate a connection issue. After each change, compare the connection indicator and dropped-frame trend against the same kind of streaming activity. Avoid changing several settings at once: if the symptom improves, you need to know which change mattered.
- Try a different ingest server. If the symptom changes, the route to the original ingest may be relevant; the test alone does not identify the failing network component.
- Lower the video bitrate. OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat it as a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal limit or a guarantee of stable throughput. If the connection improves, the original bitrate may have exceeded what the path could sustain consistently.
- Test another service. OBS lists this as another way to help isolate a connection issue. A different result is a clue, not a complete diagnosis of the original service or your network.
Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion, which may reduce connection-related dropped frames, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the root cause and can reduce video quality. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Twitch also identifies unstable routes, a bitrate too high for the available connection, and router problems as possible causes of broadcast starvation, buffering, or dropped frames. Its Broadcasting Guidelines put stability ahead of pushing quality: “Remember: it’s always better to have a stable stream than to push for a higher video quality that might cause you to drop frames or test the limits of your internet connection.” Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines
3. Consider a wired connection only as a targeted test
If your computer is using Wi-Fi, testing with a wired connection can help investigate the local network path. An Ethernet cable is not a universal fix: the fault could lie elsewhere between your computer and the ingest server. Compare the same metrics before and after the test rather than assuming the cable solved the problem.
How to read platform health messages
Use the exact message and its timestamp as a clue. YouTube’s health and error guidance covers configuration problems involving audio and video formats, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams. Inspect the setting named by the warning rather than making unrelated changes.

Test with representative content
Before an event, YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream, then watching stream health and messages during the event. A static scene may not reveal problems that appear with more motion or a different audio setup. YouTube notes that its 4K/2160 option does not offer low-latency mode and is set to normal latency; check current platform guidance before choosing a configuration. What if viewers buffer but your stream looks healthy?
Do not assume a viewer playback problem is a broadcaster-side dropped-frame problem. OBS notes that viewers differ in device, location, and internet connection; some may buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. Ask whether other streams play and compare reports from different devices or networks. Twitch likewise recommends trying other streams to help determine whether playback trouble is specific to one channel.

- If reports come from one viewer or one device, compare that device’s playback on another network or another stream.
- If viewers in different places report the same problem, check platform health messages and timestamps for a corresponding broadcaster or ingest issue.
- If broadcaster metrics remain normal and playback trouble is isolated, avoid lowering encoder settings without further evidence; that can reduce picture quality without fixing the viewer’s local issue.

A higher bitrate or resolution is not automatically better for every audience. Lowering bitrate can make delivery more stable or help viewers on constrained networks and devices, but it can also reduce image quality. Follow the platform’s current recommendations even if your computer and connection appear capable of higher settings.
Keyframe changes also involve trade-offs. Cloudflare explains that a longer keyframe interval can require less internet bandwidth and reduce buffering or freezing, but may increase glass-to-glass latency. Do not change keyframes blindly: first check the platform’s current requirements and the wording of any health warning. Cloudflare: Troubleshooting a live stream

When comparing a proposed change with the current setup, consider:
- Stability: Can the network path sustain the bitrate continuously, not just during a short test?
- Visual quality: What resolution, frame rate, and bitrate remain stable?
- Audience reach: Can viewers on slower networks and less capable devices play the stream?
- Latency: Does the stream need near-real-time interaction, and what do the platform mode and keyframe choices imply?
- Fault location: Does the evidence point to local encoding, the sender’s network path, platform ingest/configuration, or viewer playback?
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify who sees the problem. Check whether the sender sees rising dropped frames, the platform reports a health error, viewers report playback trouble, or more than one of these occurs.
- Write down timestamps and trends. Record when the symptom starts, the relevant metric or message, and any change that happens at the same time.
- Match the evidence to its layer. Investigate the network path for rising OBS dropped frames; the named encoder setting for a platform configuration error; and device, location, or network differences for viewer-only buffering.
- Change one likely cause. For network symptoms, test another ingest server, a lower bitrate, or—if relevant—a wired connection. For a platform warning, inspect the named setting.
- Compare like with like. Retest with similar movement and audio, then compare the same indicator and trend. Restore a setting if the change worsens the result.
- Keep monitoring while live. Watch platform health and timestamped messages during the event; a successful pre-event test does not remove the need to monitor.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several encoder settings at once: You lose the ability to tell which change affected the symptom. Isolate one likely cause per test.
- Treating a speed test as proof of live-stream stability: A short test does not show whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate over time. Follow the dropped-frame trend during representative activity.
- Assuming viewer buffering means the broadcaster is dropping frames: Viewer networks and devices vary. Check sender metrics and compare playback reports separately.
- Raising bitrate to improve quality despite connection warnings: If the path cannot sustain it, the stream may become less stable. Test stability before pursuing a higher setting.
- Using dynamic bitrate as a permanent network repair: It can mitigate congestion but does not fix its root cause, and picture quality may fall.
- Changing keyframes without checking platform guidance: The bandwidth and latency trade-off makes an unprompted change risky. Start with the health warning and current requirements.
