How to Install XCI on a Nintendo Switch?

XCI is a format for Switch game-card contents, not a Nintendo-supported installation method. Use Nintendo’s official digital purchase route or an official game card instead.

You can’t install an XCI file using a Nintendo-supported Switch procedure. XCI is a format for storing Nintendo Switch game-card contents, but that technical fact does not make an XCI file an official way to install or obtain a game. For supported options, buy a digital copy through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website, or use an official physical game card.

What an XCI file is—and what it does not mean

SwitchBrew describes XCI as the format used to store Nintendo Switch game-card contents. That identifies the kind of data the format can contain; it is not a Nintendo consumer-support instruction for installing that file on a Switch. SwitchBrew’s XCI reference is a technical, community-maintained source, not Nintendo support.

Nintendo’s consumer guidance describes buying authentic games through its official channels. It does not provide a supported XCI installation method. This article therefore does not give instructions for downloading or installing unauthorized game files.

Choose an official way to get the game

Option How you obtain it Physical card needed to play? Regional compatibility
Digital copy Purchase through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website, as described by Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ. No physical game card is needed for a digital copy. Not stated in the cited sources for digital purchases.
Physical game card Use an official Nintendo Switch game card. Yes. The game card is the physical medium. Nintendo says Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, except consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. See its Regional Compatibility FAQ.

How official digital downloads are installed

For software purchased through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Support Japan describes installation as occurring after the download completes. This applies to purchased eShop software, not XCI files. Nintendo’s eShop usage guidance explains that official process.

Nintendo’s position on third-party game files

Nintendo says that game files obtained through third-party download links or peer-to-peer networks are unauthorized copies. Its Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s stated position; it is not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction analysis of every situation involving private backups or file formats.
