Install Zimbra Daffodil on a clean, dedicated 64-bit Ubuntu LTS VPS, then configure the server’s fully qualified hostname, A and MX records, firewall, license, and TLS before creating production mailboxes. Zimbra changes global system configuration and bundles its own mail, directory, database, and web services, so it should not share a host with another web server, MTA, LDAP service, or database.

Choose the exact Zimbra and Ubuntu combination first
Do not provision a VPS until you have selected the Zimbra package and the Ubuntu image it supports. Zimbra’s download matrix lists Daffodil 10.1.0 GA images for 64-bit Ubuntu 24.04, 22.04, 20.04, and 18.04. The single-server installation guide’s system table lists Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04, and 22.04 instead. That difference matters: use the operating-system versions named by the documentation for the exact package you downloaded, rather than assuming that every image in the download matrix applies to every installation guide.

Zimbra’s documentation states: “You cannot install Zimbra Daffodil (v10) without a license.” Treat the license as an installation prerequisite, not as an optional upgrade after deployment.
Prepare a dedicated Ubuntu VPS
Start with a full default Ubuntu Server installation on a dedicated host. Apply the tested security updates for the chosen Ubuntu release, but avoid adding unrelated server software. Zimbra is designed to be the only application suite installed on the server and its installer makes global changes.

- Use a static public IPv4 address. If you will publish IPv6, verify that the VPS provider supplies correct reverse DNS and that your mail policy covers both address families.
- Confirm that you can set the PTR (reverse-DNS) record for the public address to the same mail hostname you will use in DNS.
- Ask the provider whether outbound SMTP on TCP port 25 is blocked by default and whether it can be opened for a legitimate mail server.
- Use SSD storage with enough capacity for mailboxes, indexes, logs, snapshots, and backup retention. Zimbra’s guide does not publish one CPU, memory, or disk figure that fits every workload.
- Arrange independent backups or provider snapshots. A snapshot is not a substitute for a tested, restorable mailbox backup.
Connect over SSH as an administrative user. Do not manually create the zimbra Unix user; the installer creates it with the required ownership and permissions.
Remove conflicting services
Before installation, stop and disable any existing web server, database, LDAP server, or mail-transfer agent. A preinstalled Postfix, Exim, Apache, Nginx, MariaDB, MySQL, or OpenLDAP service can occupy a port or alter configuration that Zimbra expects to control. Record what you remove so it can be restored on a disposable test VPS if necessary.
Install the required utilities and time service
Update the base system and install netcat (the nc command), which the prerequisite checks require:

sudo apt install -y netcat-openbsdProvide SSH access throughout the installation and schedule NTP. Accurate time is needed for TLS validation, authentication, logs, and mail headers; use the time-synchronization service supported by your Ubuntu image and verify that it is active.
Disable and verify AppArmor
The Zimbra installation prerequisites require AppArmor to be disabled and not running. On Ubuntu, stop it, disable it, and check the result before launching the installer:

systemctl is-active apparmorThe final command should report inactive. If a security policy is required by your organization, test a supported Zimbra deployment with that policy separately rather than silently leaving AppArmor active during this installation.

Set the hostname and publish DNS before installing
Choose one permanent mail hostname, such as mail.example.com, and use it consistently in the VPS hostname, A record, MX record, certificate, and reverse DNS. The Let’s Encrypt procedure checks that Zimbra’s hostname equals the output of hostname --fqdn.

hostname --fqdnThe second command must return the complete name, not a short host label. Make sure the local hosts configuration and the VPS provider’s hostname setting do not override it after a reboot.
Create the A and MX records
At your authoritative DNS provider, publish:

Zimbra checks MX records during domain creation and requires both A and MX records for sending and receiving Internet mail. DNS is therefore a functional prerequisite, not a finishing step. An SMTP relay can be configured when direct DNS lookups are disabled, but an MX record is still required if the server will receive mail from the Internet.
Allow DNS time to propagate, then query the authoritative result from the VPS:

dig +short MX example.comThe A query should return the VPS address, and the MX query should return the mail hostname. If either result is empty or points elsewhere, fix DNS before continuing.
Evaluate the VPS network before committing
The cheapest VPS is not necessarily suitable for mail. Check these capabilities in the provider’s control panel or with support:

Download and run the Zimbra installer
- Select the package. From Zimbra’s official download area, choose the Daffodil release and Ubuntu architecture that match the VPS image. Obtain the Daffodil 10.1 license or key material before configuration.
- Transfer the archive. Download it to your installation computer, verify the file you received according to the release instructions, and copy it to the VPS with your normal secure-transfer method.
- Unpack the archive. On the VPS, extract the package and enter the resulting directory. The directory name varies by release, so list it rather than assuming a fixed version string.
- Start the supplied script. Run the installer as root from the extracted directory. It checks for prerequisite Zimbra packages, installs the selected components, and opens a menu-driven configuration stage.

sudo ./install.shThe archive filename and extracted directory must match the file you downloaded; the wildcard in cd zcs-* is only a shell convenience for selecting that extracted directory.
Choose components deliberately
The installer presents the Zimbra components available in the package. Select only the services required for this server’s role, while retaining the core components needed by the supported single-server configuration. Read each license prompt and accept only after confirming that the release and license are the intended pair.

Complete the configuration menu
When the installer flags values for review, configure these items before applying the final settings:
- Logical hostname: use the same fully qualified name returned by
hostname --fqdn, such asmail.example.com. - Mail domain: enter the domain represented by the MX record, such as
example.com, not the host portion alone. - Administrator account and password: set a long, unique password and store it in an approved password manager.
- License or key information: enter the Daffodil 10.1 licensing data when requested. An older-edition key will not activate 10.1.
- Optional relay host: configure one only when your delivery design requires it. It does not remove the requirement for an MX record when receiving Internet mail.
Review the summary carefully, apply the configuration, and wait for the installer to finish. Do not interrupt it while packages, directory data, certificates, or service configuration are being written.
Open only the mail protocols you intend to provide
Zimbra’s documented external defaults are listed below. Expose only the services your users need, and keep internal service ports limited to the VPS itself or a private management network.

Allow SSH only from your administration addresses when possible. If you use UFW, add the SSH rule first so you do not lock yourself out, then allow the selected mail ports:

Add 110 and 143 only when you have deliberately chosen to support those protocols. The VPS provider’s security group or upstream firewall must allow the same ports.
Install HTTPS with the documented Let’s Encrypt route
Use the official Ubuntu procedure with Certbot and Let’s Encrypt. Before requesting a certificate, verify the hostname, A record, and CAA record. The certificate authority must be able to reach the server on TCP port 80 for standalone validation.
- Confirm that
hostname --fqdnand Zimbra’szmhostnamereport the same fully qualified hostname. - Confirm that the public A record resolves to this VPS and that the CAA record permits
letsencrypt.org. - Make TCP port 80 reachable from the Internet. If Zimbra is already listening on port 80, follow the Zimbra procedure to change the proxy or mail mode temporarily so Certbot can bind the port.
- Install Certbot from the supported Ubuntu repositories and request a standalone certificate for the mail hostname.
- Deploy the resulting certificate and private key into Zimbra using its certificate-deployment procedure, then reload the affected services.
- Configure renewal and repeat the Zimbra deployment after renewal; a renewed file on disk does not automatically mean that every Zimbra service is using it.

sudo certbot certonly --standalone -d mail.example.comIf validation reports a DNS or connection error, fix that condition first. Common causes are an A record still pointing to an old host, a missing CAA authorization, a provider firewall blocking port 80, or Zimbra retaining the port during standalone validation.

Verify the installation before creating users
Do not provision a full mailbox population until the license, DNS, HTTPS, and service checks pass.
- Check service state: run Zimbra’s service-status command and investigate any component reported as stopped.
- Check identity: compare the configured Zimbra hostname with
hostname --fqdn. - Check DNS from outside the VPS: verify A and MX results using a resolver that is not your local cache.
- Check listeners: confirm that only the intended external ports are bound and that administrative or internal service ports are not exposed publicly.
- Check HTTPS: open the administration console over HTTPS and inspect the certificate name, validity dates, and chain.
- Check delivery: create one test domain and account, send a message to an external mailbox, reply to it, and inspect headers for the expected hostname and TLS behavior.
- Check recovery: verify that a backup or snapshot can actually be restored before treating the server as production-ready.
Provision the first production domain and accounts only after these checks pass and the licensing information is accepted.
Troubleshoot the failures that stop most installations
The installer refuses to continue
Recheck the Ubuntu release and architecture against the exact Zimbra package. Confirm that netcat is installed, AppArmor is inactive, the server has a resolvable fully qualified hostname, and no competing MTA, web server, LDAP service, or database is running. The zimbra user should not have been created manually.

The hostname check fails
Make the VPS hostname, local name resolution, Zimbra’s logical hostname, and the public A record agree. Run hostname --fqdn and inspect the configured value before restarting the installation. A short hostname or a name that resolves to a different address will also break certificate issuance.

Query the MX record from an external resolver. The MX target must be a hostname with an A record pointing to the VPS. A relay host does not replace the MX requirement for Internet reception. Correct DNS and wait for propagation before retrying.
Outbound messages never leave
Check whether the provider blocks TCP 25, whether the VPS firewall allows it, and whether the destination can reach your reverse-DNS hostname. If direct delivery is intentionally disabled, configure an SMTP relay and still retain a valid MX record for inbound mail.
Let’s Encrypt cannot validate the name
Check the A record, CAA authorization, and public reachability of port 80. If Zimbra occupies port 80, use the documented proxy or mail-mode change during standalone validation. Restore the normal mode and deploy the certificate into Zimbra after issuance.
Production readiness checklist
- The selected Daffodil release and 64-bit Ubuntu image are an explicitly supported combination.
- The VPS is dedicated to Zimbra, patched, time-synchronized, and reachable over SSH.
- No unrelated web, database, LDAP, or MTA service is installed or running.
- AppArmor is disabled as required by the installation procedure, and
ncis installed. - The hostname is stable and fully qualified; Zimbra and
hostname --fqdnmatch. - A, MX, and (for certificate issuance) CAA records are published and resolve publicly.
- The Daffodil 10.1 license is installed; an older-edition license is not being reused.
- Firewall and provider security-group rules expose only the selected SMTP, submission, IMAP, POP, HTTP, and HTTPS services.
- HTTPS is valid, renews automatically, and is redeployed to Zimbra after renewal.
- SMTP port 25, reverse DNS, backups, snapshots, and restoration procedures have been tested.
When every item passes, the Ubuntu VPS has the prerequisites Zimbra expects: a supported image, a clean dedicated host, correct Internet identity, reachable mail ports, valid licensing, and managed TLS.
