To insure valuable Pokémon cards, first make an itemized record that links each card to ownership evidence, clear photos, and a defensible value. Then ask your homeowners or renters insurer about trading-card limits and scheduled coverage; compare a specialist collectibles policy if the existing policy is insufficient. Coverage and claim payments depend on the contract, so confirm the valuation basis, covered losses, exclusions, deductible, and documentation requirements before relying on a policy.
Will homeowners or renters insurance cover Pokémon cards?
Possibly, but a standard policy may not pay a rare card’s collectible value. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) warns: “So, your policy might only pay $1 for a Pokémon card instead of paying the value of a rare card worth $2,000.” That is TDI’s illustration of how a policy limit or valuation rule could affect a claim, not a universal payout or limit. TDI’s collectibles guidance recommends asking your home or renters insurer about additional coverage.
Do not assume every policy excludes cards—or that a policy will automatically pay current market value. Review your declarations and policy wording, then ask the insurer to explain how trading cards are covered and how a loss would be settled. Limits, eligibility, exclusions, and evidence requirements vary by policy and insurer.
Build an inventory that identifies each card
Create a master list that can connect a specific card to your ownership records, photos, and valuation evidence. These details are useful prompts, not a universal insurer-mandated format. Allstate’s published scheduled-coverage inventory, for example, asks for several of these details. Allstate’s collectibles page also lists trading cards among eligible categories.

State Farm recommends a detailed description, condition, purchase information, applicable identifiers, provenance, photos, receipts or certificates, and prior appraisals. Its guidance also notes that insurers’ requirements vary by insurer, policy, collectible, and value. State Farm’s guidance on appraising and insuring collectibles explains these records and valuation considerations.
Photograph cards and keep ownership evidence
Take clear, dated photographs of both faces of each card and any feature that distinguishes it from similar versions. For a graded card, include the slab label and certification number. Collection-level photos or a video can show the cards in context, but they do not replace an appraisal or card-by-card inventory.

Keep receipts, invoices, auction records, grading records, certificates, and provenance information when available. If you lack a receipt, photographs can still help identify an item; the California Department of Insurance recommends dated images and safe storage of inventory records. Its Home Inventory Guide advises keeping records away from the home as well as maintaining an inventory.
Document value with comparable sales, not just listings
For a working estimate, save recent completed sales of genuinely comparable cards. Match the set, card number, edition or variant, language, grade or raw condition, and other meaningful differences; record the transaction date and source. An asking price is not proof that a buyer paid that amount. State Farm says marketplaces, price guides, and auction results can provide a starting point, while cautioning that asking prices may not reflect what an item would actually sell for.

Insurance valuation may not be the same task as estimating a card’s market value. State Farm describes market value in terms of a willing buyer and seller, and replacement value in terms of replacing an item with one of comparable kind and quality; it notes replacement value may be relevant for insurance. Ask your insurer which valuation basis it uses for a claim and what evidence it accepts. If a formal valuation is needed, use an appraiser familiar with trading cards and state that the appraisal is for insurance purposes.
Keep records backed up and current
Store a digital copy securely and keep another copy somewhere separate from the physical collection. California’s insurance department recommends safe off-site storage and updating home inventories at least once a year. Update your own card list after purchases, sales, grading changes, or significant changes in condition or value, and tell your insurer about new purchases as required by your policy. The cited guidance does not establish a universal Pokémon-card reappraisal interval.

Compare coverage by asking about the contract
Start with your current homeowners or renters policy. Ask the insurer or agent for written answers to these questions, since a label such as “scheduled” or “collectibles” does not by itself establish what a particular contract covers.
- Are trading cards covered, and is there a category limit or sublimit?
- Can individual cards or the collection be scheduled? What appraisal, sales evidence, photos, schedule format, or per-item threshold is required?
- How is a covered loss valued—by agreed value, replacement value, actual cash value, or another policy definition—and what deductible applies?
- Which causes of loss are covered or excluded? Are cards covered away from home, in transit to grading, at a show, or while being shipped?
- Do storage location or security conditions apply? How are newly acquired cards covered, and when must additions be reported?
- How often should values be reviewed, and what records would be required for a claim?
TDI advises asking an existing home or renters insurer about more coverage and considering a specialist if needed coverage is unavailable. State Farm says additional personal articles coverage may be available, but availability, limits, and requirements vary. These are routes to investigate, not a guarantee that a particular collection will qualify.

Check provider-specific eligibility carefully
Allstate’s published page lists trading cards among eligible collectibles and states a $15,000 minimum collection value for policy eligibility. That is Allstate-specific information, not a market-wide threshold or recommendation; confirm current eligibility and terms directly with the provider.
A February 2025 brochure from Collectibles Insurance Services describes collection documentation, scheduled-location and transit provisions, and exclusions. Its listed categories name sports cards but do not expressly name Pokémon cards, so ask the company whether your specific collection qualifies and review the current policy rather than relying on the brochure alone. The brochure says claims require proof of loss and lists inventory, photos or videos, receipts, and police reports among records to have ready when contacting the company. It also lists exclusions including gradual deterioration and mysterious disappearance, while noting exclusions vary by policy. The February 2025 policy summary is an overview, not a substitute for the contract.
