In the Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, equip a transformation mask from the Masks Subscreen by assigning it to a C Button, then press that button to change Link’s form. Deku Link launches from flowers and hops over water, Goron Link rolls and pounds the ground, and Zora Link swims quickly underwater and can create a magic-powered barrier. The controls below are for the Nintendo 64 game; the 3DS remake uses a different item and camera interface.
How to equip a transformation mask in the Nintendo 64 game
- Press START to open the subscreen.
- Open the Masks Subscreen and move the cursor to the mask you want.
- Set the mask to one of the C Buttons.
- Close the subscreen and press the assigned C Button to put on the mask.
Nintendo’s manual distinguishes ordinary masks, which do not change Link’s form, from masks that carry the powers of other tribes. The blue Action Icon shows the action currently available. Movement is controlled with the Control Stick, and running off many low ledges makes Link jump automatically. Because actions depend on Link’s form and context, use the specific inputs below rather than expecting one universal attack button.
Deku Link: launch from flowers, fly briefly, and cross water
Flower flight and aerial attack
Stand on a Deku Flower, hold A, then release A to launch into the air. While airborne, press B to drop Deku Nuts. The flight is brief, not sustained.
Attacks and limits
- Spin to attack at close range.
- Press B to shoot a bubble; hold B and release for a larger bubble. Bubble attacks use magic.
- Deku Link can hop across water up to five times. Attempting another hop makes him sink and return to where he started.
- Fire and falls from great heights are dangerous to this form.
Goron Link: roll, punch, and pound the ground
Rolling
Hold A and tilt the Control Stick to curl up and begin rolling. After Goron Link rolls a short distance without hitting an obstacle, spikes emerge and he can continue rolling without holding forward. The spiked rolling uses magic; obstacles can interrupt the setup.

Punches and ground pound
- Press B with good timing to punch, chaining up to three punches.
- While curled, hold A and press B to pound the ground. The impact can damage nearby enemies.
- Goron Link’s armored body can also damage enemies when he rolls into them.
His weight prevents him from travelling through deep water, and the manual warns that he cannot handle falls from heights.
Zora Link: swim, dive, attack, and use an electric barrier
Swimming and diving
- Underwater, press A to swim swiftly and steer with the Control Stick.
- At the surface, press B to dive. Once on the sea floor, Zora Link can move as if on land.
Attacks and barrier
- Press B with good timing for up to three punches.
- Hold and release B to throw a fin from each arm. Z-targeting can home in on an enemy; Zora Link cannot use other attacks while the fins are flying.
- While swimming, press R, or hold R and B, to surround himself with an electric current. The barrier consumes magic.
Zora Link is vulnerable to both fire and ice.
Do the same controls apply to Majora’s Mask 3D?
No: treat the N64 button mappings above as version-specific. In Majora’s Mask 3D, masks and items can be used with assigned buttons or by tapping their touch-screen slots. Nintendo also documents motion controls for looking around, C Stick camera control on New Nintendo 3DS systems, and Circle Pad Pro right Circle Pad support for looking around. The official 3DS material establishes these interface and camera options, but does not establish that each transformation action uses the N64 inputs unchanged.

Nintendo describes the same three broad transformation roles across the games—Deku flying, Goron rolling, and Zora swimming—but the available official 3DS control guidance here does not give a form-by-form button list. Match instructions to the edition and hardware you are using.
