The reliable way to add Bootstrap to a WordPress theme is to enqueue its CSS and JavaScript from a callback attached to wp_enqueue_scripts. Give every asset a unique, theme-prefixed handle, pin an explicit Bootstrap version, declare dependencies, load the JavaScript bundle in the footer, and enqueue your theme stylesheet after Bootstrap so your rules can override it intentionally. If you are extending an existing theme, put the integration in a child theme so parent-theme updates do not erase it.

What the integration actually does
Bootstrap is a front-end framework: its compiled CSS supplies layout, typography, spacing, responsive utilities, and component styles; its JavaScript activates interactive components such as dropdowns, modals, collapse panels, popovers, and tooltips. WordPress does not expect those files to be pasted into header.php or a footer template. Instead, it builds a dependency graph for front-end assets and prints them in the correct place when you use its enqueue APIs.

Inside the callback, call wp_enqueue_style() for CSS and wp_enqueue_script() for JavaScript. WordPress can then prevent duplicate registrations, order dependent files, add version query strings for cache busting, and place scripts in the footer. This is the recommended method of linking scripts to a WordPress-generated page.
Before you add Bootstrap
Identify the theme you are modifying
If the site uses a theme you control and maintain, its own functions.php can contain the enqueue callback. If you are extending a parent theme obtained from another developer, use a child theme. A child theme keeps your enqueue code and overrides separate from the parent, making parent updates less likely to overwrite your work. The enqueue recommendation for a child theme follows WordPress’s theme asset model; the important practical point is that the callback must run from the active theme, not from an inactive parent directory.
#1 Best Overall
Choose a delivery method
Bootstrap’s distribution includes compiled CSS and JavaScript, as well as source Sass and JavaScript. You can therefore load a pinned release from a CDN, keep compiled files inside your theme, or use a build pipeline that produces your own assets. Decide this before writing the callback because the URL, update process, caching behavior, and policy requirements differ.
| Delivery method | Version control | Build and deployment work | Cache and resilience considerations | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDN URL | Pin the complete version in the URL and enqueue version. | Minimal; no compilation is required. | A visitor needs access to the external host. A CDN outage, firewall rule, or content-security policy can prevent loading. | A small site or prototype that wants a quick, documented integration. |
| Local compiled files | Your repository and release process determine exactly which files are deployed. | Download or build Bootstrap, copy the compiled files into the theme, and deploy them with the theme. | Files use your site’s origin, so they work without a third-party request and can follow your own caching policy. | Sites with strict privacy, security, availability, or change-control requirements. |
| Build pipeline | Lock the package version and record the build configuration. | Highest setup cost; Sass/JavaScript compilation and a repeatable deployment step are required. | You can remove unused styles, combine assets, and publish cache-busted files, but a broken build blocks deployment. | Projects already using npm or another asset pipeline and needing customization. |
Whichever method you select, document the Bootstrap release and delivery location in the theme repository. A version-specific example is useful for learning, but it should not be mistaken for a forever-current release.

The minimum enqueue implementation
The following callback follows the Bootstrap v5.0 documentation example and uses the CDN URLs and version 5.0.2. Keep that version only if it is the release your project has selected; otherwise replace both URLs and both version values together with the supported release you have approved.
<?php
function mytheme_enqueue_bootstrap() {
wp_enqueue_style(
'mytheme-bootstrap',
'https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css',
array(),
'5.0.2'
);
wp_enqueue_style(
'mytheme-style',
get_stylesheet_uri(),
array('mytheme-bootstrap'),
wp_get_theme()->get('Version')
);
wp_enqueue_script(
'mytheme-bootstrap-bundle',
'https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js',
array(),
'5.0.2',
true
);
}
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', 'mytheme_enqueue_bootstrap');
Why each line matters
- Theme-prefixed handles:
mytheme-bootstrap,mytheme-style, andmytheme-bootstrap-bundleidentify the files in WordPress’s asset registry. Replacemythemewith a prefix unique to your theme; do not use a generic handle that another plugin or theme might already claim. - Explicit versions: The Bootstrap assets use
5.0.2, while the theme stylesheet uses the theme’s declared version. WordPress can append those values to the URLs, allowing browsers and intermediate caches to recognize a changed release. - Style dependency: The theme stylesheet declares
array('mytheme-bootstrap'). WordPress therefore prints Bootstrap first and your stylesheet afterward, giving your local rules a predictable opportunity to override framework defaults. - Bundle selection:
bootstrap.bundle.min.jsincludes Popper. Dropdowns, popovers, and tooltips need Popper for positioning, so the bundle avoids a common missing-dependency failure. - Footer placement: The final
truerequests footer output for the Bootstrap script. CSS remains available while the page is rendered, while JavaScript does not block the initial document in the same way a head script can. - Hook location:
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', ...)runs the callback at the WordPress front-end enqueue stage. Do not call these functions by printing literal tags from a template when the enqueue system can express the same relationship.
Adding Bootstrap files stored in your theme
For a local integration, put the compiled files in a known directory such as assets/css and assets/js, then change only the URLs in the callback. The dependency and version ideas remain the same.

<?php
function mytheme_enqueue_local_bootstrap() {
$theme_version = wp_get_theme()->get('Version');
$theme_uri = get_stylesheet_directory_uri();
wp_enqueue_style(
'mytheme-bootstrap',
$theme_uri . '/assets/css/bootstrap.min.css',
array(),
'5.0.2'
);
wp_enqueue_style(
'mytheme-style',

$theme_uri . '/assets/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js',
array(),
'5.0.2',
true

}
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', 'mytheme_enqueue_local_bootstrap');
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() points at the active stylesheet directory, which is the child theme directory when a child theme is active. That makes this form suitable for a child-theme-owned copy of the files. If the assets belong to a parent theme instead, use the parent directory function and keep the ownership decision explicit.
How CSS order and overrides work
Loading Bootstrap is not the same as converting an existing theme into a Bootstrap theme. Your theme may already define container widths, heading margins, button styles, navigation rules, or responsive breakpoints. Bootstrap classes and the existing theme selectors can therefore compete. Enqueueing your stylesheet after Bootstrap gives you a consistent order, but CSS specificity still determines which declaration wins.
A practical override workflow
- Open the browser’s developer tools and inspect the element whose appearance is wrong.
- Identify whether Bootstrap or the theme supplies the winning declaration, including its selector specificity and media query.
- Add a narrowly targeted rule to the theme stylesheet rather than changing Bootstrap’s distributed file.
- Keep responsive overrides inside the appropriate media query and verify the result at the viewport widths your design supports.
- Increase specificity only when necessary. Avoid adding
!importantbroadly, because it makes future component changes harder to reason about.
For a new theme, decide whether Bootstrap supplies the primary layout system or only selected components. Mixing two complete layout systems without a naming and spacing policy creates confusing markup and more override work.
Making Bootstrap JavaScript components work
Use the bundle when positioning is required
The Bootstrap bundle contains Bootstrap’s JavaScript and Popper. Use it when your markup includes dropdowns, popovers, or tooltips. If you enqueue a non-bundle Bootstrap script instead, Popper must be supplied separately and declared as a dependency in the correct order; otherwise the interactive component may render without opening or may appear in the wrong position.
Rank #3
Use Bootstrap’s required markup and attributes
Enqueueing JavaScript does not repair invalid component markup. A dropdown needs the trigger and menu structure expected by the Bootstrap release you selected, including the matching data-bs-* attributes for Bootstrap 5. A page copied from Bootstrap 4 documentation may use data-toggle and data-target instead, which will not activate a Bootstrap 5 component. Check that every trigger references an existing target and that IDs are unique on the page.
Initialize only what needs initialization
Many Bootstrap 5 components respond to data attributes without custom initialization. Tooltips and popovers commonly require JavaScript initialization because they are opt-in. Keep initialization code in a separate theme script and enqueue that file after the Bootstrap handle:

true
);
}
add_action('wp_enqueue_scripts', 'mytheme_enqueue_interactions');
Inside interactions.js, initialize only elements that exist on the page. For example, a tooltip initializer can select elements with data-bs-toggle="tooltip" and construct the Bootstrap tooltip object for each one. If the script runs before the bundle, the constructor will be undefined; the dependency array prevents that ordering mistake.
Child themes: where the code belongs
When a parent theme is being extended, create or activate the child theme first, then place the enqueue callback in the child theme’s functions.php. Keep the child theme’s stylesheet as the final style dependency. Do not copy the entire parent functions.php into the child; duplicate callbacks can enqueue the same framework twice or create conflicting handles.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Check the active theme before debugging
- In the WordPress admin, confirm the child theme is the active theme.
- Verify that the callback is in the active theme’s
functions.php, not an inactive theme directory. - Confirm the function name and handles are unique and that the file contains no PHP syntax error before the hook registration.
- Inspect the generated page source or the browser network panel for the expected Bootstrap URLs.
If a parent theme already enqueues Bootstrap, do not add a second copy automatically. First identify its handle and version, then decide whether to reuse, dequeue, or replace it in a controlled child-theme customization. Two copies can register duplicate event handlers and produce inconsistent component behavior.
CDN versus local files: a decision checklist
- Pinning: A versioned URL such as
https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/[email protected]/dist/css/bootstrap.min.cssis different from an unversioned URL. Keep the version in the URL and in the enqueue call aligned. - Privacy and policy: A CDN request reveals the visitor’s request to that external host. A local copy avoids that third-party request and may simplify a restrictive content-security policy.
- Availability: A remote dependency requires DNS, network access, and a permitted origin. Local files continue to load when an external host is blocked.
- Deployment: Local files become part of your release artifact. A build pipeline must reproduce the same compiled output so staging and production do not silently diverge.
- Updates: Treat a Bootstrap upgrade as a code change. Read the release documentation, test component markup and overrides, update both asset URLs, and change the enqueue version in one commit.
Common failures and precise fixes
Bootstrap styles do not appear
- View the page source and confirm a stylesheet link exists.
- Open the stylesheet URL directly. A 404 indicates a wrong path, missing local file, or typo in the CDN URL.
- Check that the callback is attached to
wp_enqueue_scriptsand that the active theme loads the file containing it. - Clear page, object, and browser caches after changing the version or path.
- Inspect the network response for a content-security policy or mixed-content block. A secure page should not request an HTTP asset.
Dropdowns, tooltips, or popovers do nothing
- Confirm the Bootstrap JavaScript file is present and returns successfully.
- Use the bundle rather than the standalone script when the component needs Popper.
- Check the browser console for a JavaScript exception from another plugin or theme script. An earlier uncaught exception can stop later code.
- Verify the attributes match your Bootstrap major version: Bootstrap 5 uses the
data-bs-prefix. - Ensure your custom interaction script depends on
mytheme-bootstrap-bundleand is not printed manually ahead of it.
The page loads two Bootstrap copies
Search the generated HTML for duplicate stylesheet and script URLs, then inspect the enqueue handles used by the parent theme and plugins. Remove the redundant enqueue or coordinate the handles in the child theme. Do not solve duplication by randomly changing load order; one documented version is easier to test than two competing versions.
The Tool Desk

Confirm that the theme stylesheet declares Bootstrap as a dependency and is printed afterward. If it already is, inspect specificity and media-query order in developer tools. A more specific selector or a later responsive rule may still win, so adjust the selector deliberately rather than editing the distributed Bootstrap file.
The footer script causes a timing error
Footer placement does not excuse code that assumes a DOM element exists. Use a DOM-ready callback or place initialization after the relevant markup, and enqueue the initialization file as dependent on the Bootstrap bundle. If a plugin expects Bootstrap before its own script, declare the Bootstrap handle in that plugin’s dependency list when you control the integration.
Best Value
Testing the finished integration
- Load a page that contains plain Bootstrap utility classes, such as a container, row, and button, and verify the expected styling.
- Open a dropdown and a collapse component at desktop and narrow viewport widths.
- Test a tooltip or popover if the site uses one; confirm it is positioned correctly near the viewport edge.
- Check the browser console and network panel for 404 responses, blocked requests, duplicate files, and JavaScript exceptions.
- View the page source to confirm CSS precedes the theme override stylesheet and that scripts appear according to their dependencies.
- Test logged-out and logged-in views, because admin-bar markup, caching, and conditional plugin output can change the page.
- Repeat the checks after cache invalidation and on the production domain, not only on a local development URL.
Also test keyboard operation and focus states. Framework classes do not automatically make custom markup accessible: triggers need an appropriate semantic element, visible focus, an accurate expanded state, and a target that can be reached and closed with the keyboard.
Updating the pinned Bootstrap release
Do not change only the number in the enqueue version. A release upgrade is a coordinated change to the CSS URL, JavaScript URL, version arguments, and potentially your markup and overrides.
- Record the currently deployed Bootstrap version and whether the files come from a CDN, a local copy, or a build output.
- Read the selected release’s migration notes and identify changed class names, data attributes, JavaScript APIs, and browser support.
- Update the CSS and JavaScript URLs together. If you use the bundle, keep the bundle choice consistent with the new release.
- Update the version values passed to WordPress so caches receive the new asset URL.
- Test navigation, forms, modals, dropdowns, collapse regions, tooltips, responsive layouts, and any custom overrides.
- Deploy the files and code atomically when using local assets, so a new URL is never requested before its file is available.
The CDN URLs shown in the example are specifically for Bootstrap 5.0.2. They are not a promise that this release is the right choice for a new project; select and document a supported release appropriate to your site’s compatibility requirements.
Quick Recap
A compact reference for the required pieces
| Piece | WordPress location or API | Purpose | Typical mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-end hook | wp_enqueue_scripts |
Runs the asset-registration callback on front-end requests. | Printing tags directly in a template or using an admin-only hook. |
| Bootstrap CSS | wp_enqueue_style() |
Loads the framework’s compiled styles. | Using an unpinned URL or loading it after the theme overrides. |
| Theme CSS | wp_enqueue_style() with Bootstrap as a dependency |
Loads local design rules after Bootstrap. | Omitting the dependency and relying on accidental template order. |
| Bootstrap JavaScript | wp_enqueue_script() |
Activates interactive components. | Using a standalone script without Popper for positioning components. |
| Version argument | Fourth argument of either enqueue function | Provides an explicit cache-busting value. | Updating a file while leaving an old version value and stale cache. |
| Footer flag | Fifth argument of wp_enqueue_script() |
Requests footer placement for the Bootstrap script. | Assuming footer placement fixes invalid initialization code. |
Final implementation checklist
- Bootstrap CSS and JavaScript are registered from the active theme’s
functions.php. - The callback is attached to
wp_enqueue_scripts. - Handles use a unique theme prefix.
- The Bootstrap release is pinned in both the asset URL and the enqueue version value.
- The theme stylesheet depends on Bootstrap and loads afterward.
- The JavaScript bundle is used when dropdowns, popovers, or tooltips need Popper.
- Custom initialization scripts depend on the Bootstrap bundle rather than being printed manually.
- A child theme contains the integration when a parent theme is being extended.
- Duplicate Bootstrap copies have been removed or intentionally coordinated.
- Network, console, responsive, keyboard, and cache tests pass on the production domain.
