The simplest way to connect Discord to a Project Zomboid server is to use the game’s native Discord settings for chat, logs, and a bot token. Add a webhook when you only need server-to-Discord notifications. If Discord users must run server commands, restart the server, or manage players, use an RCON bot or a control panel instead. Your server build, operating system, and hosting panel determine which option is practical.

What a Discord integration can do
Project Zomboid exposes Discord and remote-console settings in its server configuration. The official ServerOptions reference documents fields for enabling Discord, authenticating a bot, selecting chat and log channels, setting a command channel, and supplying a webhook address. The same reference documents rconPort and rconPassword for remote-console software.

Those settings support several different outcomes, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Game-to-Discord notifications: in-game chat, server logs, or startup messages appear in selected Discord channels.
- Discord-to-game communication: a bot can relay approved Discord messages or commands to the server, depending on the software you run.
- Server administration: RCON or a control panel can expose restarts, scheduled maintenance, player actions, and other administrative operations.
- Extended gameplay controls: a panel-side mod may expose functions that ordinary RCON does not, such as inventory or character-data editing.
Start with the least privileged design that solves the problem. A webhook is appropriate for announcements and logs; native bot settings suit a small, low-maintenance relay; RCON adds command authority; and a control panel adds a larger management surface.

Choose the right integration architecture

The direction of traffic is the most important decision. If nobody needs to issue commands from Discord, do not expose RCON merely to obtain chat notifications. If moderators need to act while away from the game, plan for role restrictions, password management, and a bot or panel that can reach the server host.
Prepare the server and Discord before editing anything
Back up the active configuration
Stop or otherwise protect the server configuration before changing it, and make a dated copy of the active server .ini. The file used by a hosted panel may differ from the file you would edit on a conventional dedicated-server installation. Pterodactyl operators in particular should verify the startup command and the path to the active configuration rather than assuming a local desktop path.
Confirm the Discord destination
- Create or select the Discord server (guild) that will receive Project Zomboid messages.
- Create separate channels for chat, logs, and administration if you want different audiences and retention policies.
- Record each channel’s numeric ID using Discord’s developer-mode channel-copy function.
- Decide which bot roles may read, send, and manage messages. Grant only the channel permissions required for the selected integration.
Check the game build and host
Build compatibility is not uniform. PZ Discord Bridge explicitly requires Project Zomboid Build 41 or newer, while PZ-CRCON documents Build 41 and Build 42 support. Other integrations may publish their own release-specific requirements. Confirm the branch installed on the server before adding a Workshop mod, Lua component, or external bot.
Collect credentials safely
You will need a Discord bot token for native bot integrations, a webhook URL for webhook-only posting, or an RCON port and password for administration. Treat bot tokens and RCON passwords as secrets: keep them out of public chat, screenshots, startup logs, and source repositories. Regenerate a Discord token immediately if it is exposed.
Configure Project Zomboid’s native Discord settings
The official ServerOptions documentation lists the relevant keys at projectzomboid.com/modding/zombie/network/ServerOptions.html. Names are case-sensitive in the context of the documented options, so copy them exactly into the active server configuration.

Step 1: Create the Discord bot
- Open Discord’s developer portal and create an application for this server.
- Add a bot user to the application and copy its token once it is generated.
- Keep the token private. Do not paste it into a public support channel or commit it to a configuration repository.
Step 2: Invite the bot with limited permissions
Generate an installation invite for the target guild. Give the bot access to only the channels it must use. A notification-only bot normally needs to view channels and send messages; a log relay may also need to embed links or attach files if your chosen software requires those features. Avoid granting broad server-management permissions when the integration only posts text.
Step 3: Copy channel IDs
Enable Discord developer mode, copy the IDs for the chat, log, and command channels, and label them before editing the server file. Mixing up IDs is a common reason for a bot that appears online but posts nowhere.
Step 4: Edit the active server .ini
After making your backup, set discordEnable, the token, and only the channel fields you intend to use. Add webhookAddress when you are using a webhook destination. Do not assume that editing a similarly named template changes the running server; hosted environments can generate or mount a different file at startup.
Step 5: Restart and test in a controlled order
- Restart the Project Zomboid server so it reads the changed configuration.
- Test one ordinary chat message and confirm it appears in the selected chat channel.
- Trigger a harmless server event and verify that logs arrive in the log channel.
- Only after those checks, test the command channel or any external administrative component.
The official reference confirms the available fields, but it does not publish a universal Discord permission matrix or a complete developer-portal walkthrough. Match the bot’s permissions to the channels and features you actually enabled.
Use a webhook or log-forwarding bridge for one-way alerts
PZ Discord Bridge for Linux and Pterodactyl
PZ Discord Bridge is described as a lightweight server-side integration for Linux dedicated servers and Pterodactyl. Its listed prerequisites are Project Zomboid Build 41 or newer, Bash, a Discord webhook, and Discord integration enabled. The installation instructions tell the operator to copy a webhook URL and append a Bash log-forwarder to the server startup command.

This approach is useful when the server should publish output but Discord users should not gain a command path back to the game. On Pterodactyl, verify that the startup pipe is preserved by the panel and that the command points to the active server installation. A panel update or a changed startup template can remove an appended command, so record the final startup line in your deployment notes.
Zomboi’s chat relay
Zomboi documents a Discord bot that posts global in-game chat through a webhook. Messages include speaker names and, when a matching account is available, Discord avatars. Its documented direction is game to Discord; reverse chat is not yet supported. The project’s setup documentation says to create a Discord bot, copy its token, and place channel IDs in its configuration, and it identifies the default dedicated-server installation and server-name configuration used by its setup.
Choose this style of bridge when moderators mainly need visibility. Do not advertise it to players as a two-way chat system unless the specific release documents that feature.
Add Discord-to-server control with RCON
What RCON changes
RCON is a remote console, not merely a chat relay. It gives a client a path to send server commands, so it deserves stronger access controls than a webhook. The Project Zomboid reference lists rconPort and rconPassword; an external bot uses those values to connect.

Jeeves requires a dedicated server with RCON enabled. Its documented feature set includes lifecycle control, scheduled restarts, mod-update detection, chat relay, player tracking, rank colors, and role-aware administration. Those features make it a better fit for a staffed community than a webhook-only bridge, provided the Discord roles are maintained as carefully as the in-game administrator list.

Safe RCON rollout
- Enable RCON in the server configuration and set a strong, unique password.
- Confirm the RCON port and the host address that the bot must reach.
- Install the bot in an environment that can connect to that host, whether the bot runs beside the server or on another machine.
- Map Discord roles to the smallest set of commands each moderator needs.
- Test a read-only or low-impact command before trying a restart, kick, ban, or mod operation.
Keep the RCON port bound and firewalled according to your deployment’s security model, and do not expose it broadly when the bot can connect over a private network. The documented projects identify the credentials and ports involved, but they do not publish one universal hardening checklist for every host or panel.

PZ-CRCON
PZ-CRCON is a Dockerized, self-hosted panel documented for Build 41 and Build 42. It supports Discord OAuth, a static Discord administrator allowlist, RCON, optional Lua telemetry, and Discord notifications. The allowlist model is useful when you want a fixed set of Discord accounts to access the panel rather than granting access to every guild member.
Because it runs as a separate service, account for Docker networking, persistent storage, and updates in addition to the Project Zomboid server itself. Keep the panel’s public exposure separate from the game’s RCON exposure where possible.
Zomboid Control Panel
Zomboid Control Panel supports Windows, Linux, Docker, and hosted setups. Its quick setup configures RCON. Its optional PanelBridge Lua mod adds features that RCON cannot reach, including teleport, healing, weather, character data, inventory editing, and sound triggers.
Install the optional mod only when those actions are genuinely needed. They have a greater impact on player state than ordinary announcements or scheduled restarts, so restrict them to trusted administrators and keep an audit trail through the panel or Discord logs.

Decide between the options with five practical questions
1. Which direction should messages travel?
- Choose native settings or a webhook bridge for game-to-Discord chat and logs.
- Choose an RCON bot when approved Discord messages must invoke server commands.
- Choose a panel when you need browser administration, authentication, and monitoring in addition to chat.
2. Where does the server run?
Windows, Linux, Docker, and Pterodactyl change how startup commands, file paths, networking, and persistent configuration are handled. PZ Discord Bridge specifically targets Linux dedicated servers and Pterodactyl. Zomboid Control Panel documents Windows, Linux, Docker, and hosted setups. Select an integration with instructions for the environment you actually operate.

A webhook posts. A bot with native command support may read and send in selected channels. RCON can execute server commands. A panel with Lua support can alter player and world state. Moving down that list increases the consequences of a leaked token, password, or Discord role.
4. How much maintenance can you support?
Native fields keep the moving-part count low. A webhook bridge adds a startup command or forwarding process. An RCON bot adds a runtime, credentials, and role configuration. A control panel adds Docker or web-service maintenance and, in some cases, a Workshop or Lua component.
5. Does the integration match your build?
Check Build 41 versus Build 42 support before upgrading. A server update can leave the bot running while breaking a mod, startup hook, or telemetry component that depended on an earlier API.
Troubleshoot a bot that does not post or connect
The bot is offline or authentication fails
- Copy the token again without leading or trailing whitespace.
- Confirm the token has not been regenerated in Discord’s developer portal.
- Verify that the bot is still a member of the target guild.
- Check that the active server
.ini, not a template or unused profile, containsdiscordEnableanddiscordToken.
The bot is online but no messages appear
- Re-copy each channel ID and compare it with the intended chat, log, or command channel.
- Check the bot’s channel-level view and send permissions.
- Restart the game server after changing the configuration.
- Test chat and logs separately so a failure in one channel does not obscure a working channel.
A webhook bridge posts nothing
- Confirm that the webhook URL belongs to the current channel and has not been deleted or regenerated.
- Verify that Bash is available on the host and that the log-forwarder is actually present in the startup command.
- On Pterodactyl, confirm the startup pipe and the path to the active server
.ini. - Check that the server is on a supported Build 41-or-newer branch for PZ Discord Bridge.
An RCON bot cannot reach the server
- Compare the bot’s configured port with
rconPort. - Re-enter
rconPasswordand check for hidden spaces or an outdated password. - Verify that the host firewall and container network permit the bot to reach the RCON endpoint.
- Ensure the bot is connecting to the correct server host when the bot and game run on different machines.
A panel feature is missing
Check whether the feature depends on RCON, optional Lua telemetry, or the PanelBridge mod. RCON alone cannot provide every action documented by Zomboid Control Panel. Also verify that the installed Build 41 or Build 42 branch matches the panel or mod release.
Operate the integration without creating avoidable risk
- Keep a backup of the working
.ini, startup command, bot configuration, and panel environment variables before upgrades. - Use separate Discord channels for public chat, noisy logs, and administrator commands.
- Review Discord role membership whenever moderators leave or change responsibilities.
- Rotate exposed bot tokens and RCON passwords immediately rather than waiting for suspicious activity.
- Test after every server, mod, panel, or bot update, beginning with a harmless chat message.
- Document which component owns each function: native settings, webhook bridge, RCON bot, or control panel. This prevents two systems from issuing conflicting commands or duplicating messages.
