Can you play a BioShock co-op campaign with a friend?
Not according to the official material covered here. The BioShock 2 Steam manual documents multiplayer matches and a private-match option, but it does not describe a two-player cooperative version of the story campaign. A private match is therefore not the same thing as starting the single-player Rapture or Minerva’s Den campaign with another person.

Check your edition and platform first
The invitation steps below are tied specifically to the BioShock 2 Steam manual. Do not assume that the original BioShock, BioShock Infinite, a remastered release, a console edition, or another BioShock 2 distribution uses the same menus or still has an active online service.

The current Steam product page is another useful place to check the edition you own: BioShock 2 on Steam. Its listing should be read together with the actual menus available in your installation, because a store description cannot guarantee that an older online service is operating on every platform.
What everyone needs before starting
- A copy of the same documented Steam edition, or a platform-specific edition whose multiplayer support you have independently confirmed.
- A Steam account for each participant when using the Steam instructions.
- Each participant added to the host’s Steam friends list. The manual’s invitation control draws from that list.
- A working internet connection and access to the game’s multiplayer service.
- A clear decision about the activity: Private Match multiplayer, rather than a cooperative story campaign.
Cross-platform play is not established by the cited manual. Unless the exact release documentation says otherwise, plan the session around the same platform and compatible edition.

How to invite friends on the documented Steam edition
The manual’s wording is concise, so the safest approach is to follow the labels that appear in your copy rather than assume a remastered or console menu is identical.
- Launch BioShock 2 from Steam. Confirm that you are opening the BioShock 2 installation covered by the Steam manual, not another BioShock title or a different edition.
- Enter the multiplayer portion of the main menu. The invitation control is described in the player lobby, so you must enter multiplayer rather than the single-player campaign.
- Create or select a private match. When the multiplayer menu presents match types, choose Private Match. The manual defines this as play exclusively with friends, which prevents the session from being treated as a public matchmaking round.
- Become the party leader or host. The leader is the player who sets up the session. That player chooses the game type and map for the match.

- Start the match from the lobby. Once the group is ready, the party leader starts the configured game type on the selected map. This begins multiplayer play; it does not create a cooperative campaign save.
How a friend joins an invitation
The joining player does not need to configure the map or game type when the host has already done so. The practical sequence is:
- Remain signed in to the Steam account that the host invited.
- Accept the incoming Steam game invitation.
- Allow BioShock 2 to bring you into the host’s private player lobby.
- Wait for the host to finish setup and start the match.
If the invitation opens Steam but does not place the player in the lobby, both players should return to the game’s multiplayer menu, confirm that the host is still in the private lobby, and send a new invitation. This checks the lobby state without changing the match type.

There is no “Invite Friends” option
First verify that you entered multiplayer and a player lobby, not the single-player campaign. Then check that you are using the Steam edition covered by the manual. A different platform, remaster, or distribution may use different menus or may not expose the same feature. If the control remains absent, consult that edition’s current support information rather than assuming the game supports the documented Steam flow.

Your friend is not listed
The documented invitation control uses the Steam friends list. Confirm that the person is actually added to the host’s Steam account, that both accounts are online, and that the host has opened the lobby’s Invite Friends control. If the person still does not appear, check for an edition or platform mismatch before changing match settings.
The invitation is accepted but the player does not join
Have the host remain in the private lobby and send the invitation again. The joining player should accept it from the same Steam account that received it and wait for the game to return to the multiplayer lobby. If repeated attempts fail, restart the game and re-create the private match; this resets the lobby without suggesting that a campaign co-op mode exists.
The group expected a story mission
Stop before launching the match and confirm the activity. Private Match is multiplayer on a selected map and game type. It is not documented as shared campaign progression, so the group should not expect common story checkpoints, cooperative objectives, or a campaign save.

Which BioShock should you install for this feature?
