To join a listed Bedrock server, open Play > Servers, select a server, then choose Play. To join an unlisted server, get its address and any required port from the administrator and add it on computer or mobile. Minecraft’s standard console interface is limited to featured servers, so it does not offer the same manual-add flow.

Join a server from the list

  1. Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and select Play.
  2. Open the Servers tab.
  3. Select a listed server and review its description or details.
  4. Select Play to connect.

Minecraft’s server page describes featured servers as options players can browse and join from the game.

Add an unlisted server on computer or mobile

Ask the server administrator for the address and whether a non-default port is required. The address may be an IP address or a URL, as Minecraft Help explains. Do not substitute a Java server address or assume a console can use manual entry.

  1. Select Play, then open Servers.
  2. Select Add Server.
  3. Enter a name for the server and the address supplied by its administrator.
  4. Enter the supplied port if one is specified. Minecraft Help lists 19132 as the default Bedrock port; use the administrator’s port when it differs.
  5. Save the entry to return to it later, or add and play immediately if that option is shown.

Manual server entry is covered by Minecraft’s official instructions for computer and mobile. The standard console server list is limited to featured servers; see Minecraft Help’s platform guidance.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Check that your platform and account can play

  • Match editions: A Bedrock player needs a Bedrock server. Java and Bedrock use different servers and cannot join each other’s servers, according to Minecraft’s edition comparison.
  • Update the game: You and the server should be using compatible, current versions.
  • Sign in where required: Console and mobile players need to sign in or link a Microsoft account under Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.
  • Check multiplayer permissions: Account settings, especially child-account permissions, can prevent joining.
  • Check console online access: Console multiplayer may require the platform’s online subscription. Minecraft’s requirements name Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch; confirm the current terms with the platform.

Choose the right way to play with a friend

Option Who hosts it What you need to join Does the host need to be online?
Server A server operator or administrator Select it from the server list, or use the administrator-provided address and port where manual entry is supported Not necessarily; availability depends on the server
Friend’s Bedrock world Your friend Be Minecraft friends; join from the Friends tab when the world is available Yes; the friend must be online and the world joinable
Realm A Realm owner Access to that Realm The owner does not have to be actively hosting the session

Joining a friend’s active world is different from joining a server: Minecraft Help says both players must be Minecraft friends and online for the world to appear as joinable in the Friends tab. See the friend-world instructions. Realms and server hosting are ways to maintain or create a world, not purchases required to join an existing server; see Minecraft’s server guide.

Troubleshoot a failed connection

  • The server is missing: Check that you are on the Servers tab, that the server is listed for your platform, and that you entered a private server’s address correctly.
  • Connection times out or is refused: Recheck the address and port with the administrator, confirm the server is online, and make sure your game is up to date.
  • You cannot join but others can: Verify that you are using Bedrock, check multiplayer permissions and sign-in status, and confirm any required console subscription.
  • A friend’s world is unavailable: Confirm your friend is online, the world is open to you, and you are both connected to the network.
  • The problem persists: Check your internet connection, custom DNS or port settings, and relevant service status. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide covers additional checks.
