To join an outdated Minecraft server, first find out whether it runs Java Edition or Bedrock Edition and ask for its exact accepted version. Java players can usually select that version in the Minecraft Launcher. If you cannot change your Java client version, the server operator may be able to configure ViaVersion. Bedrock players cannot simply select an older Java version; joining a Java server requires a compatible Geyser setup.
First, identify the edition and version the server accepts
Java and Bedrock are separate editions, and a Bedrock player needs a Bedrock destination unless the Java server has been set up for cross-play. Minecraft Help says multiplayer requires matching game versions and recommends using the latest release to avoid errors; ask the server owner which edition and exact version the server accepts before changing settings. - Java player, older Java server: select the server’s Java version in the Launcher.
- Java player who cannot change versions: ask whether the operator supports ViaVersion.
- Bedrock player, Java server: ask whether Geyser is configured, and request the Bedrock address and port.
Join an older Java server using the matching version
- Ask the server owner for the exact Minecraft Java version and server address.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations. Create an installation, select the requested version, and save it. If the version is not immediately visible, check the installation or version settings for older releases.
- Start the game using that installation.
- From the Java multiplayer screen, add or select the server and enter the address provided by its owner.
Changing the version used to connect is different from opening a local world in an older release. Back up local worlds before opening them with another version; safe downgrade behavior for an individual world is not established here.
If you cannot change your Java client version
Ask the server operator whether ViaVersion is installed and whether its configuration supports your client and the server’s version. GeyserMC documents ViaVersion as an option for allowing newer Java clients to connect to older Java servers. It is a server-side compatibility option: an ordinary player cannot install it on a server they do not administer. Join a Java server from Bedrock Edition
A Bedrock player needs a server configured for cross-play, typically using Geyser, which translates traffic and emulates a Java client. The operator must configure a Java version that Geyser accepts. For relevant older Java server configurations, Geyser’s setup documentation specifies additional ViaVersion support. Ask the operator whether the particular server and version combination is supported rather than assuming that Geyser works with every Java server. GeyserMC: setup
Geyser does not translate features from mods that require players to install those mods on their own clients. If the server requires such client-side mods, Geyser alone will not make it joinable from Bedrock.

What to ask the server operator
- Is Geyser configured for this server, and is my Bedrock platform supported by this setup?
- What Bedrock address and UDP port should I enter?
- Which Java server version does the setup accept, and is ViaVersion needed for it?
- Does the server require client-side mods or specific authentication?
Geyser’s documentation gives UDP port 19132 as the default in relevant configurations, but the actual port can differ. Use the address and port supplied by the operator. They may need to make the UDP port reachable through both the host’s firewall and the network or hosting provider. The operator can test a configured endpoint with geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>. If you administer the server
Choose the setup path for your server software and version, then follow Geyser’s current instructions rather than mixing installation steps for different versions. The documented options include plugins, proxies, standalone operation, and ViaProxy. Geyser-Spigot is documented for Spigot or Paper 1.20.5 and later with Java 21 or later; older Spigot or Paper versions have alternatives including a proxy or Geyser Standalone with ViaVersion, or ViaProxy with Geyser-ViaProxy. Geyser-Fabric and Geyser-NeoForge have separate version limitations. These requirements can change, so check the current setup guide and supported versions for the exact software you run.

Troubleshoot outdated-client and connection errors
- “Outdated client” or “Outdated server”: confirm the edition and exact version expected. Use a matching Java installation, or ask the operator whether server-side compatibility is configured.
- Connection refused: verify the address, whether the server is online, and—if connecting through Geyser—the configured UDP port and network access.
- Authentication failure: ask the operator which authentication setup the server requires. A Java server in online mode expects valid Java account authentication unless an appropriate Floodgate setup is used.
- Bedrock cannot connect to a Java server: confirm Geyser is active, the Java version is accepted by that setup, and you have the correct Bedrock endpoint.
- Modded server: check whether required mods must be installed on the client; Geyser does not translate client-side-required mod features.
