When Lucien Lachance appears, accept his contract to kill Rufio at the Inn of Ill Omen. After the contract, sleep again and follow Lucien’s directions to the sanctuary in Cheydinhal.
1. Trigger Lucien Lachance’s invitation
Kill an innocent, non-hostile NPC. Killing a hostile enemy such as a bandit does not meet the described requirement. When the murder qualifies, the game may display: “Your killing has been observed by forces unknown…” PC Gamer’s guide, published April 22, 2025, describes this trigger.
Choose someone who is not needed for a quest or other important purpose; avoid quest characters, shopkeepers, and other essential NPCs.
2. Sleep to meet Lucien
After the qualifying kill, sleep in a bed at an inn or another accessible location. Lucien should approach when you wake. The reported message is “The air grows chill and a shadow approaches…” Speak with him and accept the task he gives you.

3. Kill Rufio at the Inn of Ill Omen
Lucien sends you to the Inn of Ill Omen, north of Bravil. Rufio is in the inn’s basement, in the private quarters. You can speak to him or attack him directly; PC Gamer reports that he stays in the basement.
Lucien gives you the Blade of Woe before the contract, but PCGamesN says you do not have to use it to kill Rufio. The weapon is not a requirement for completing this step.

4. Sleep again and travel to the sanctuary
After killing Rufio, sleep. Lucien will return, confirm your invitation, and direct you to Cheydinhal. The PCGamesN guide, updated May 13, 2025, describes this sequence.
In Cheydinhal, find the abandoned house on the eastern side of town and go through its basement to reach the black sanctuary door.

5. Enter the sanctuary and speak with Ocheeva
When the door asks, “What is the color of night?”, answer “Sanguine, my Brother.” Follow the wording shown in your game if localization or an edition presents a variation.
Inside, speak with Ocheeva to continue as a member. PCGamesN reports that she welcomes the player and gives them Shrouded Armor and a Shrouded Hood.

If Lucien does not appear
- Check that your victim was an innocent, non-hostile NPC rather than an enemy you fought.
- Make sure you slept after the kill; Lucien’s meeting happens when you wake.
- If you completed those steps and still do not get the encounter, the cited guides do not establish a complete fix for every edge case or platform-specific bug.
