You can play the free On the Rocks co-op preview with up to four players on PC through Steam. Open the official Steam store page, select Download On the Rocks Demo, install and launch it, create a multiplayer lobby, and invite friends through Steam’s invite flow. Everyone readies up in the lobby before the group enters the shared world.
What you need before starting
- A PC running the Steam version of On the Rocks.
- The separate demo installed from the official Steam listing.
- Friends who have also installed and launched the demo so they can accept an invitation.
- A decision about which player will host, because the host controls the co-op world’s save and progression.
The demo is free. The official announcement describes it as “LIVE and FREE on Steam right now,” while the store listing identifies the PC version as supporting Online Co-op. The demo is available independently of the planned full game, which the Steam listing places in Q4 2026.

Step-by-step: join the On the Rocks co-op demo
1. Open the official Steam listing
Go to the official On the Rocks Steam page. Use the page’s Download On the Rocks Demo option rather than treating the unreleased full game as the product you need to purchase. The demo is the playable co-op preview.

2. Install and launch the demo
Finish the Steam installation, then start the demo from your Steam library. Each person who plans to play should have the demo installed and running before the host sends the invitation. Starting the same demo build helps the group avoid trying to join a session from a different product entry.

3. Select the multiplayer or co-op option
At the demo’s opening menus, choose the option for co-op or multiplayer. The exact menu wording can change while the preview is being updated, but the goal is to enter the online session flow rather than begin a solo game.
4. Create the lobby
Have the player whose save the group wants to continue create the lobby. The co-op announcement says the lobby supports invitations and ready checks for up to four players. Creating the session makes that player the host and establishes the world whose progress will be retained for future co-op play.
5. Invite friends through Steam
From the lobby, use the game’s Steam invitation flow to select the friends you want to bring into the session. The official announcement specifically describes lobby invitations, so you do not need a separate matchmaking service or a physical product to access this preview. Send invitations to no more than three other players; the preview’s maximum party size is four people total, including the host.

Watch the lobby until the invited players have connected. The co-op preview includes a ready check, so each participant should confirm readiness when the lobby indicates that option. If someone is still joining, wait before starting; launching early leaves that player outside the current session.
7. Enter the shared world
Once the group is ready, start the session from the lobby. The party then enters the shared On the Rocks world together. The announcement presents this as a four-player co-op preview rather than a separate full-release mode, so expect the available content and behavior to reflect the demo’s current state.

How hosting and saves work
Choose the host before inviting anyone
Co-op world saves and progression are managed by the host. That means the most important hosting decision is not who has the fastest connection; it is whose save the group intends to continue. If one player is likely to organize most sessions or has already started the world the group wants, that player should create the lobby each time.
Joining another player’s save
Joining a friend’s lobby lets you play in that friend’s hosted world, but it does not make your own save the campaign record. For a consistent group, use the same host whenever possible. If the group changes hosts, it should expect to be entering a different hosted progression rather than automatically merging the two worlds.
What to do when the regular host is unavailable
The available information establishes that the host owns the co-op save management, but it does not describe save-transfer or host-migration tools. Plan around that limitation: schedule the main group’s sessions around the chosen host, and do not assume another player can continue the same world simply by creating a new lobby.
What is included in the demo?
Approximately 40 minutes of story
The official Steam Community announcement describes the preview as “~40 Minutes of Story + Endless Sandbox.” The story segment gives the group a guided introduction to the game’s setting and activities, while the sandbox portion is intended for continued play after the guided content ends.
Endless sandbox play
After the story portion, the demo offers an endless sandbox rather than ending immediately. Because this is a preview, the phrase describes the intended sandbox format, not a guarantee that every system planned for the full game is already present or complete.

Four-player limit
The co-op preview supports up to four players. Count the host as one of those four places: one host plus up to three invited friends. A fifth person cannot join the same co-op lobby under the announced limit.

Preview limitations to understand before you start
It is an active preview
The co-op feature is labeled a Preview and may contain bugs or rough edges. Treat unexpected behavior as a possible limitation of the current build rather than evidence that the invitation procedure is wrong.
Random city duels remain single-player
The official co-op announcement states that random city duels are currently single-player. If your group reaches that activity, the co-op session should not be expected to turn it into a four-person event. The restriction applies to that feature even while the wider preview supports online co-op.
Hostile minimap indicators still need multiplayer validation
The announcement also notes that hostile minimap indicators still need validation in multiplayer. In practical terms, the group should not rely on those indicators as a fully tested source of enemy information during co-op. Use the preview knowing that multiplayer signaling in this area may be incomplete or inconsistent.
Demo and full release are different products
The Steam page lists the planned full game for Q4 2026. That date concerns the unreleased product, not a promise that the demo will automatically receive every planned feature or that the preview’s current limitations will be fixed on a particular day. The co-op instructions above apply to the demo available through Steam.

Solo or co-op: which way should you play?

Choose solo if you want the simplest way to see the story or do not have the designated host available. Choose co-op if the point is to share the bar-running experience with friends and everyone can coordinate around one host’s save.
A reliable session plan for a group of friends
Before the first session
- Agree on the host whose save should become the group’s continuing world.
- Ask every participant to install and launch the demo from the official Steam listing.
- Decide whether the first session will focus on the approximately 40-minute story segment or on experimenting in the endless sandbox afterward.
- Keep the party at four players or fewer, including the host.
When the host opens the lobby
- The host selects the co-op or multiplayer option.
- The host creates the lobby.
- The host sends Steam invitations to the other players.
- Everyone joins the lobby and confirms the ready check.
- The host starts the shared world only after the intended party is present.
During the preview
- Remember that progress belongs to the hosted world.
- Do not interpret a single-player random city duel as a failed co-op connection.
- Be cautious about hostile minimap indicators because their multiplayer behavior still requires validation.
- Report or work around bugs as preview rough edges rather than repeatedly recreating the lobby without checking the activity’s stated restrictions.
Troubleshooting the invitation and lobby process
The demo option is missing on Steam
Return to the official store listing and look specifically for Download On the Rocks Demo. The full game’s planned Q4 2026 release is separate from the currently playable demo, so searching only for the unreleased product can lead you to the wrong entry.
A friend cannot join the session
- Confirm that the host created a co-op or multiplayer lobby rather than starting a solo session.
- Confirm that the friend launched the demo and is available to receive the Steam invitation.
- Check the party count. The announced limit is four players total, so a full lobby cannot accept another participant.
- Have the host resend the invitation through the lobby’s Steam invite flow if the first invitation was missed.
These checks address the documented session sequence. If the problem persists, remember that the feature is a Preview and may have bugs or rough edges.
The group cannot find its previous progress
Verify that the same player is hosting the lobby. Since the host manages co-op world saves and progression, starting a new session under another player can place the group in that player’s hosted world instead of the original one. The available announcement does not describe a save-transfer mechanism.

Random city duels are currently single-player. Leave the co-op lobby procedure unchanged; the restriction is attached to that activity, not to the general four-player preview.

Enemy information on the minimap seems unreliable
Hostile minimap indicators still need multiplayer validation according to the official announcement. Do not treat inconsistent indicators as proof that the lobby failed. Continue with the preview’s other systems and account for the possibility that this multiplayer feedback is unfinished.
Steam Next Fest context
The publisher announcement connected the updated demo with Steam Next Fest, scheduled for October 19–26, 2026. Event schedules can change, and the event window is not a requirement for joining the demo: the announcement says the playable build is already live and free on Steam. Use the store page for access rather than waiting for the festival dates.
What the developers say about co-op
Aysu Ünal, co-founder at 312 Interactive, explained the design decision this way: “Running a bar has never been a one-person job, so bringing co-op to On the Rocks felt like the natural next step.” The quote reflects the reason for adding shared play; it does not change the practical limits of the current preview, including the four-player cap, host-controlled saves, single-player city duels, and unfinished minimap validation.
