Windows can delay some update restarts and relaunch a streaming app after a restart, but neither feature guarantees that an animated story stream will return to a live state. Use active hours to reduce interruptions, configure a suitable launch path, and test the full restart-and-reconnect process on the PC and app you actually use.
Why Windows updates can interrupt an always-on stream
Some updates need a restart to finish installing. If the animation is playing through a desktop app, a restart stops that playback; launching the app again is a separate problem from restoring its project, scene, authentication, and connection to YouTube. Microsoft describes Windows restart and startup features, but those features do not establish that a particular streaming app can resume its previous output automatically.
Plan for two separate outcomes: reduce the chance of a routine restart during your stream schedule, then arrange and test how the app starts again afterward. Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted service. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains that a device needs to restart to finish installing an update.
Set Windows Update to avoid inconvenient restarts
Choose active hours
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually to cover the time your stream is expected to run.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours. Set the hours around your planned streaming period.
Active hours help prevent inconvenient restarts while you are using the device; they are not a way to permanently avoid updates or prevent every possible restart. The Microsoft active-hours guidance covers the setting. The Windows Update FAQ also describes scheduling a restart and temporarily pausing updates. A pause is temporary, so it is not a durable 24/7 streaming plan.

Account for Windows version and support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check Microsoft’s active-hours and lifecycle information if this stream PC still runs Windows 10.
Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 explanation says that, on eligible Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, releases on and after July 28, 2026 combine some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update. The rollout is gradual; urgent updates can remain exceptions, and delayed updates are not held indefinitely. This is a qualified policy for eligible versions, not a promise of one restart in every circumstance. See Microsoft’s update explanation.

Choose how the streaming app should relaunch

Use Startup apps or a Startup-folder shortcut
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and enable the streaming app if it appears. Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps and enable it there.
- If the app is not listed, use the current-user Startup folder: press Win + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. Add a shortcut to the app only if its vendor supports launching it this way. - For all users of the PC, Microsoft documents the common Startup folder, opened with
shell:common startup. Use it only if that broader sign-in behavior is intended. - Sign out and back in to test whether the app opens. Then confirm whether it restores the animation and reconnects to the intended YouTube stream; a window opening is not proof that the stream is live.
Use Task Scheduler when you need a trigger or retries
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task using a trigger appropriate to the app and machine, such as a system-start trigger or a sign-in trigger. Choose based on whether the app requires an interactive desktop.
- Set the action to the executable and launch method supported by the streaming app’s vendor. There is no safe universal command line or privilege setting for unknown animation software.
- Where suitable, consider the task settings
StartWhenAvailableandRestartOnFailure. Microsoft’s schema specifies that failure recovery requires both a retry count and an interval; see the Task Scheduler settings schema and RestartOnFailure schema. - Run the task manually and inspect its result, then test after an actual restart. A successful task launch only verifies the Windows task action, not the app’s playback or stream recovery.
Test the complete recovery chain
Test on the machine that will run the stream, during a maintenance window when an interruption is acceptable. Install pending updates and restart the PC; do not infer restart behavior from a normal app relaunch alone.

- Confirm the intended Windows account signs in if the app needs an interactive desktop. A PC that boots but waits at the sign-in screen may not launch a sign-in startup app.
- Check that the streaming app opens the correct animation project or scene and has the authentication it needs.
- Verify video and audio output, network reconnection, and the actual live state on YouTube.
- Separately close or terminate the app in a controlled test and check whether your chosen startup or task configuration restarts it. Task retries and update-reboot recovery are distinct cases.
This test is operational guidance, not a claim that a particular app or PC has been tested. Windows launch mechanisms cannot establish app-specific restoration behavior.
Understand what wake and retry settings do not do
Task Scheduler’s WakeToRun setting is for waking a sleeping computer to run a scheduled task. Microsoft notes that the display may remain off, so waking a PC for a task is not equivalent to restoring a visible animation after an update reboot. See Microsoft’s WakeToRun documentation.

Similarly, a scheduled task’s retry settings can relaunch a task after a task failure when configured, but they do not prove that a particular app will reload the right content, authenticate, or reconnect to a live endpoint. If your app requires a signed-in desktop or manual authentication, configure and test that requirement rather than assuming a background task can bypass it.
