A single VPS cannot keep its stream available while that same VPS reboots. If Liquidsoap and the listener-facing server both run on the machine being updated, listeners should expect an interruption. To keep audio available, put the public listening endpoint on an independently running system with a working source or fallback, or configure and test a standby with traffic failover. A process manager can restart a stream service after it stops; it cannot keep its host online during a reboot.
First identify what the update will do
The right maintenance method depends on whether you are changing configuration, restarting a service, or rebooting the VPS. Those operations have different effects on connected sources and listeners.

Liquidsoap’s documentation describes a stream generator sending audio to an Icecast server, which relays it to listeners. The generator and listener-facing server can be separate components, but separating them only helps if the relay can still receive audio or play fallback audio when the generator is unavailable. For a configuration-only change, try a supported reload
Liquidsoap documents configuration reloads on its Icecast-compatible server that preserve connected sources and listeners. However, some settings take effect only after a restart. Confirm the behavior for the setting you are changing and consult the reference matching your installed Liquidsoap version; the surfaced project pages are version 2.5.x development documentation, not a guarantee for every installed release. A reload is not protection from a VPS reboot. If the change requires restarting the host or server, plan for that interruption unless another system is already serving listeners.
For a service update, use a process manager and verify playback
The Liquidsoap project recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux or launchd on macOS. Its production example uses Restart=always. This helps recover a process after it exits; it does not provide host-level availability while the VPS is rebooting. See the Liquidsoap production documentation.

- Determine whether the update changes configuration, restarts the streaming service, or reboots the VPS.
- Save the current configuration and check playlist and media references. Confirm that the service is enabled to start at boot.
- Before restarting after a script edit, validate it with
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq. Adjust the path if your configuration is stored elsewhere. - If the change supports an in-place reload, use that rather than restarting the server.
- If a reboot is required and there is no independent relay or tested standby, announce a maintenance window rather than promising uninterrupted playback.
- When the VPS returns, check the service manager and the source-to-server connection. Then test the public mount URL and confirm that audio—not just a running process—is present. Check monitoring alerts as well.
Exact service commands depend on the operating system, host configuration, and installed software versions. A successful service start alone does not establish that the public stream is audible.
Keep a listener-facing relay on a separate host
A relay on an independent host can keep the public endpoint available during maintenance only if it has a usable source or fallback audio while the VPS running the generator is down. Moving Icecast to another machine while leaving the only Liquidsoap generator on the rebooting VPS does not, by itself, keep listeners hearing audio.

Before relying on a relay, decide how it receives the live stream, what it plays if that source disappears, and how listeners continue using a stable public URL. Test the arrangement by taking the generator offline and checking actual playback at the public endpoint.
Use a standby and traffic failover to reduce interruption
An active-standby design can switch traffic from a primary host to a ready standby. It generally requires a second host, synchronized configuration and content where applicable, health checks, and a traffic-switching method supported by your hosting provider. A second VPS alone is not automatic failover.

Failover can reduce service interruption, but it does not guarantee seamless listening. AWS’s floating-IP example notes that media endpoints may need to reconnect and active sessions can be dropped unless continuity is engineered separately. That example applies to AWS architecture; other providers may offer different mechanisms or none. See AWS Elastic IP addresses.
Liquidsoap also documents fallback mounts that can switch sources while listeners remain on a mount within its server architecture. That can help with source loss, but cannot make one VPS stay available during its own reboot. See the Liquidsoap Icecast-compatible server documentation.

Choose the maintenance plan that matches your availability needs
- Brief, planned interruption is acceptable: use a service manager, validate changes, announce a maintenance window for any required reboot, and verify the public audio afterward.
- Listeners should keep a stable endpoint during generator maintenance: host the relay independently and ensure it has a source or fallback for the interruption.
- You need reduced interruption during host failure or maintenance: build and test an active-standby and traffic-switching design, accounting for listener reconnections.
- You are only changing a setting: check whether your installed version supports an in-place reload for that specific setting before restarting anything.
There is no established universal outage duration or listener-loss figure for VPS updates. Use your provider’s maintenance notice and your own measurements to estimate impact; do not assume a standard reboot time.
