To keep a 24/7 devotional stream online through an internet outage, protect the parts of the chain that can fail: your local power, primary internet connection, encoder, and YouTube ingest. A UPS can keep local equipment powered; a tested cellular connection can take over for some wired-internet failures; and a configured backup encoder can cover certain encoder-path failures. None guarantees uninterrupted streaming through every outage, so rehearse each switchover with your actual setup.
Start by finding what can take the stream offline
Map the complete path from the recording or playback source to viewers: content source, encoder, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), router or failover gateway, internet provider, YouTube ingest, and viewer playback. Note which devices share a power strip, network switch, ISP, mobile carrier, or building connection. A backup that depends on the same failed connection or power source may not help.
Separate two problems that are easy to confuse: a power outage and an internet-service outage. A UPS does not restore a failed ISP circuit, and a cellular connection cannot help if its router or modem has no power.
Keep the stream connected when the wired internet fails
Use a genuinely independent cellular path
A cellular WAN failover device or compatible router can provide a second route when the wired ISP fails. The backup is useful only if it can reach the internet independently of the failure you are trying to cover. Check that the mobile path does not rely on the same provider or upstream connection, where that information is available, and confirm that the equipment works with your router and carrier.

Service models differ. Ubiquiti documents LTE and 5G backup devices, including a LAN-connected backup approach: UniFi 5G and LTE Backup Best Practices. Verizon describes a different arrangement using a compatible home router and an eligible registered phone; its service and equipment restrictions apply: Verizon Cellular Wi-Fi Backup FAQs. These are examples, not universal service rules. Carrier availability, coverage, router compatibility, and plan terms vary by location and provider.
Measure the connection where the equipment will run
Test sustained outbound upload at the installed location, ideally at the times the stream will run. A speed test taken elsewhere or at a different time does not establish that the backup path can carry a continuous stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; when primary and backup streams are both being sent, its guidance is to allow for both stream bitrates plus that headroom. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Rehearse at the intended bitrate for a meaningful duration. Check upload stability, failover behavior, data allowances or throttling, and whether viewers notice a gap. Do not assume a phone hotspot is suitable for indefinite video without testing its signal, sustained upload, data plan, power needs, and device temperature under load.
Keep local equipment running during a power interruption
If a computer or hardware encoder at your location produces the stream, identify every device it needs: the encoder, modem or ONT, router or failover gateway, and any required network switch. A UPS can supply temporary power only to equipment connected to it, and its runtime is finite. Size it for the actual load and the duration you need; do not assume that powering your router also keeps the ISP’s upstream equipment or network available.

Cellular backup during a power outage also depends on powered local equipment. Verizon, for example, says its cellular backup can work through a power outage only when the router has backup power and the phone is on with usable mobile signal (Verizon’s service FAQ).
Prepare for encoder and YouTube-ingest failures
Understand what YouTube’s backup-encoder setup covers
YouTube’s Live Control Room lets you check stream health and preview the incoming feed. An encoder sends YouTube a stream URL and key; YouTube distinguishes software encoders from standalone hardware encoders in its encoder setup guidance. A second encoder can provide another ingest path for some encoder failures, but it does not protect every part of the distribution chain or guarantee recovery from a YouTube-side incident.

Match both encoder configurations exactly
YouTube’s requirement is explicit: “Your primary and backup streams must have the exact same settings for failover to work properly.” Match resolution, video codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, audio channels, and audio codec. A mismatch in any of these may prevent failover. Follow YouTube’s current live streaming error guidance when configuring the streams.
Test the changeover with viewers’ playback in mind
YouTube recommends rehearsing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup encoder. During the test, check Live Control Room health and preview, the public watch page from another device, and the audio as well as the video. If you record locally, check that the archive file is growing and is intact. These checks follow YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use a written recovery sequence
When a stream drops, confirm the actual failure before announcing that it is back. A network connection returning does not prove YouTube is receiving a valid feed.
- Check whether the wired ISP or cellular path is available.
- Inspect modem or ONT status, router or failover status, and power to the encoder and network equipment.
- Check encoder connection and YouTube Live Control Room health and preview.
- Open the public watch page from another device and verify both picture and sound.
- Confirm any local recording is intact, then tell viewers the stream has recovered.
For overnight operation, write down who is responsible for each check and what to do if automatic failover does not happen.

YouTube lists cloud tools such as Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams in its encoder information. A hosted playout workflow may fit a devotional channel replaying recordings rather than streaming a live source from a local encoder, but it is not a substitute for checking the service’s delivery path and recovery behavior.
