Lower your encoder’s video bitrate first. That directly reduces the data your stream sends to YouTube; if you still need to cut outgoing traffic, test a lower resolution or frame rate and check the resulting picture and stream health. Snowfall contains fine, moving detail, so judge the actual stream rather than assuming a low-motion scene will compress easily.
Reduce the encoder’s video bitrate first
The video bitrate is the main setting that controls how much encoded video data your encoder sends upstream. A lower bitrate uses less outgoing bandwidth, but it can also soften fine detail or create compression artifacts. There is no single bitrate that guarantees acceptable snow imagery or a reliable stream on every connection.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended settings according to resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264, its listed recommendations include:
| Input setting | YouTube’s listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the stated H.264 settings, not snow-specific minimums or a promise that a connection can sustain them. Check YouTube’s current settings table before configuring a stream, since recommendations can change. YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and supported codecs.

Set a sustainable target, not just a lower number
In OBS, open Settings > Output, select Streaming, and adjust the video bitrate. Labels can vary by OBS version and output mode. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance advises lowering bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the stream and suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a universal formula: other household uploads and fluctuations in your connection reduce what is safely available to the stream.
Keep audio settings in mind when estimating total outgoing traffic: the video bitrate is not the only data sent. For a continuous stream, leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full result of a speed test. A brief speed test does not establish that your upload connection will remain stable around the clock.

Estimate the data sent over a day
A useful approximation is to multiply the configured bitrate by the time streamed, then convert bits to bytes. At a constant 1 Mbps for 24 hours, the calculation is 1,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000, or about 10.8 decimal GB before protocol overhead. At 4 Mbps, the same calculation gives about 43.2 decimal GB per day before overhead.
These are arithmetic estimates based on a constant bitrate, not measured traffic or a YouTube guarantee. Real traffic can differ because of bitrate behavior and protocol overhead. They describe the creator’s outgoing stream, not the total data viewers use to watch it.

Test lower resolution or frame rate if needed
If a sustainable bitrate still sends more data than you want, lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again. Fewer pixels or frames can reduce encoding and upload demands, but the trade-off is less image detail or less-smooth snowfall. In OBS, review Settings > Video for the output resolution and frame rate options; exact labels may differ by version.
- For each test, use the actual snowstorm footage, including its busiest snowfall and any audio.
- Inspect fine snowflakes, dark areas and moving edges for smearing, blocking or other compression artifacts.
- Check whether the motion still looks smooth enough at the selected frame rate.
- Monitor stream health while the test runs, and repeat under typical household network use.
Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether bitrate, resolution or frame rate caused a visible difference or connection improvement. OBS also describes dynamically changing bitrate as a congestion workaround that reduces quality, not as a fix for an underlying network problem.

Why YouTube transcoding does not reduce your upload
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. OBS’s transcoding overview explains that platforms may create multiple resolution and bitrate options for viewers. That can give viewers playback choices, but it does not lower the bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube. To reduce the creator-side outgoing traffic, lower the encoder’s send rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the problem is your home connection’s outgoing traffic, a cloud stream host can move the encoder’s upload off your local connection. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream. This shifts the outgoing stream away from home; it does not make the stream’s YouTube ingest data disappear.
