Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →FFmpeg’s reconnect options apply to HTTP connections, not YouTube’s RTMP output. Put them before the -i for an HTTP input that may disconnect; they do not, by themselves, make FFmpeg reconnect its RTMP publishing connection. For YouTube output recovery, handle FFmpeg restarts separately and verify the current ingest URL, stream key, and protocol in YouTube Live Control Room.
What FFmpeg’s reconnect options do—and do not do
FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related settings under its HTTP protocol options. They control HTTP connections, which can be useful when an HTTP input source disconnects. RTMP is a separate protocol, and FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation describes it independently.
That distinction is about which connection an option controls. An FFmpeg command can read from an HTTP source and publish to an RTMP destination, but HTTP reconnect flags do not turn into RTMP output retry settings just because the command ends with an RTMP URL. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal command-line flag that guarantees reconnection of a YouTube RTMP output.
Which HTTP reconnect options are available?
reconnect: reconnect after a disconnection before the HTTP input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error and reconnect. This can suit an intended endless or live source, but may cause unwanted retries when a finite file or ordinary source has ended normally.reconnect_on_network_error: reconnect for TCP or TLS errors during connection.reconnect_on_http_error: reconnect for selected HTTP status codes. The documented syntax accepts individual codes such as503and groups such as4xxor5xx.reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects for streamed, non-seekable inputs.reconnect_delay_max: set a maximum delay in seconds before giving up.reconnect_max_retries: set a maximum number of retries.reconnect_delay_total_max: limit total reconnect delay.respect_retry_after: honor an HTTPRetry-Afterheader instead of relying on exponential backoff.
Defaults can vary by FFmpeg version and build. The current trunk HTTP source lists implementation defaults of 120 seconds for reconnect_delay_max, -1 for reconnect_max_retries, and 256 seconds for reconnect_delay_total_max; these are not guarantees for every installed release. Check ffmpeg -version, local help, and documentation matching your release when exact behavior matters.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use reconnect flags on an HTTP input
Place input options before the corresponding -i URL. This illustrative command enables reconnect handling for an HTTP source and copies its media to an RTMP destination:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "https://example.invalid/live-source"
-c copy -f flv "rtmp://ingest.example.invalid/app/STREAM_KEY"
The .invalid hostnames are placeholders, not working endpoints. Replace them with a source and YouTube destination obtained from the respective services. The options before -i apply to the HTTP input; this example does not configure RTMP output retries. Reconnecting an input also does not guarantee gapless playback, preserved stream continuity, or successful recovery of the publishing connection.

Decide whether EOF means failure
Use reconnect_at_eof only when the HTTP source is intended to be endless and its EOF behavior should count as an interruption. For a finite recording, EOF normally means the file is finished; treating it as an error can create an unwanted retry loop.
Set up YouTube output and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance instructs encoder users to enter those values in their encoder.
- Configure FFmpeg for the RTMP or RTMPS ingest workflow YouTube currently allows for that stream. YouTube’s current encoder settings page identifies supported protocols, video and audio codec choices, and encoding guidance. Consult its current settings for your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a generic bitrate or other stale value.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public examples, logs, screenshots, and repositories. If you reset it, update the encoder with the new key in Live Control Room.
- Test before an event and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while live, following its current encoder guidance.
As one specifically qualified reference point, Google / YouTube Help recommends a 5 Mbps H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps on its current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. That is a platform recommendation, not a measured statistic or universal minimum; check the current table for your chosen configuration.

Troubleshoot the layer that failed
When a stream drops, identify whether the failure is at the input, FFmpeg process, output connection, local network, or YouTube ingest. YouTube’s streaming tips warn: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
- HTTP input stops: Check whether it is live or finite, seekable or non-seekable, and what failure it reports. Apply the HTTP reconnect options to that input only; do not treat expected EOF as a failure without a reason.
- FFmpeg exits or RTMP publishing fails: HTTP reconnect flags do not establish RTMP output reconnection. Arrange an explicit process restart or retry strategy for this failure layer, and account for the fact that restarting may cause a visible interruption.
- YouTube does not accept the encoder: Verify the current server URL, stream key, selected protocol, and Live Control Room health indicators. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder.
- Local network is unstable: YouTube recommends enough outbound bandwidth and headroom. Its current streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; when using primary and backup encoders, its calculation accounts for both encoders plus that headroom. Wired Ethernet can remove a weak Wi-Fi hop, but cannot fix ISP, routing, or ingest-side problems.
- A primary encoder failure needs backup: YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking whether the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a local FFmpeg process and computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
