You can run a prerecorded news playlist continuously from an OVHcloud VPS by storing the media on the server, sending it through an encoder, and connecting that encoder to YouTube Live. The VPS can stay online when your own computer is off, but 24/7 operation still depends on the server, network route, encoder, source files, and YouTube ingest. Choose settings from YouTube’s guidance, test the actual VPS connection, protect the stream key, and do not rely on YouTube to archive a single broadcast longer than 12 hours.
How the VPS, encoder, and YouTube Live fit together
The basic path is playlist files on the VPS → encoder → YouTube Live ingest. The playlist supplies prerecorded video and audio; the encoder creates the outgoing feed; YouTube receives that feed and presents the live event to viewers. The VPS is the always-on host for the files and encoder process.
YouTube’s API distinguishes the watchable event, called a liveBroadcast, from the incoming feed configuration, called a liveStream. They are related but separate parts of the workflow. Google also documents a use case in which a channel keeps a 24/7 broadcast running while creating a separate broadcast for an interview. That distinction matters if you want continuous programming but need separate event pages for special coverage. Google’s broadcasts and streams overview explains the objects and their relationship.
This is not a validated, copy-and-paste OVHcloud recipe: no specific server plan, FFmpeg command, or systemd/watchdog configuration has been tested for this setup. Treat encoder and service-manager configuration as something to verify against the current software and operating system you choose.

Choose an encoder workflow and size the server around it
FFmpeg or OBS
FFmpeg is a command-line workflow suited to automated playback of files on a headless server. OBS provides a graphical scene and mixer workflow, which may be more familiar if you already assemble scenes visually. These are workflow distinctions, not claims about comparative performance; confirm the current requirements and playlist capabilities of whichever software you select.
Transcoding or sending compatible encoded media
If the encoder must transcode video in real time, measure CPU use under the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, and filter settings you plan to run. Sending already encoded media without re-encoding can reduce the encoding work, but only works when the files and output meet the requirements of the selected workflow. Test media transitions as well as a single file; incompatible formats or broken files can interrupt playback.
Storage, CPU, and network checks
- Storage: estimate the total size of the files you intend to keep on the VPS, plus room for any local recordings or working files your workflow needs.
- CPU: observe usage while representative content is being processed. Do not choose a plan on the assumption that all media can be transcoded without checking.
- Outbound network: measure sustained upload from the selected instance and region to YouTube. An advertised plan-level network figure is not proof of sustained throughput on your route.
- Region and plan: check the current catalog and network options for the purchase region on the OVHcloud VPS page. OVHcloud’s documentation portal is the starting point for provisioning and account guidance.
A server that only relays compatible pre-encoded media has a different CPU workload from one that transcodes continuously. The appropriate instance therefore depends on the actual media library, encoding choice, and measured network and CPU behavior—not on a universal plan recommendation.

Set YouTube ingest settings to match the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supported video and audio codecs including H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the full settings table and any requirements relevant to your chosen codec.

For H.264, YouTube’s published minimum and recommended ingest bitrates include these examples. They are YouTube guidance, not measurements of an OVHcloud instance.

Choose an output your source files and encoder can sustain, then leave headroom above the intended video bitrate for variability and audio. A VPS plan’s advertised peak does not establish the real sustained rate from that machine to YouTube. Run an upload test from the selected instance and perform a representative private or unlisted stream test before relying on it.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Prepare the channel: in YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.
- Configure the encoder: enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings, and set the encoder to the protocol and output settings you selected. YouTube describes the stream key as telling the encoder where to send the feed.
- Store the key privately: treat it as a password. Put it in a restricted configuration or secret store, limit who can read it, and keep it out of public repositories and logs. YouTube states, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Recover if exposed: an authorized channel owner or manager can reset the key in Live Control Room. Update the encoder with the replacement key before expecting it to send to the channel again.
Test playback and monitor stream health
Before making a stream public, test with representative motion and audio rather than a static sample. Confirm that the playlist advances cleanly, the audio is present, the chosen resolution and frame rate are correct, and YouTube reports healthy ingest. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream-health messages; keep Live Control Room available during initial operation and check it again after configuration changes.
For unattended operation, a process supervisor or restart policy can help relaunch software after a process exits, but it does not prevent failures in the VPS, network route, source media, or YouTube. No particular systemd unit or watchdog design is established here. Verify the service behavior for your operating system, and test what happens after an encoder restart, a network interruption, and a media-file transition. Do not promise uninterrupted uptime merely because the process is configured to restart.
Plan broadcasts and archives separately
A continuous playlist may suit one ongoing live event, while separate programming periods or interviews may be easier to manage as distinct broadcasts. Google’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast coexisting with a separate broadcast for an interview, so a continuous feed does not require every piece of programming to share one event page.

Do not treat a 24/7 broadcast as a dependable single archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s wording is: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours long, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” See Archive live streams and YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance. If retaining footage matters, plan local recording and/or shorter broadcast segments, then verify the channel’s settings and your actual archive workflow.

Using prerecorded news clips in a live playlist does not remove the need to confirm that you have the rights and permissions to use the footage, music, graphics, and other material. Check the channel’s YouTube policies and the permissions attached to each item before putting it into continuous rotation. A live format is not a substitute for permission, and this article cannot determine whether a particular clip qualifies for an exception or is eligible for monetization.

Common problems and what to check
