Changing scenes or showing and hiding sources in OBS normally changes the picture—not the YouTube stream connection. Keep the stream output running; do not stop and restart it for an ordinary scene change. If the picture goes black or stalls, diagnose the source or OBS performance separately from a dropped connection.
What changes when an OBS source changes?
OBS scenes combine sources into the program image, while streaming controls manage the connection to YouTube. OBS’s overview guide treats these as separate operations; it does not say a normal scene switch requires a new YouTube connection. That is not a guarantee of a seamless picture on every setup: a source may take time to initialize, or the computer or network may struggle.
- YouTube still says the stream is live, but the picture is blank or delayed: investigate source visibility, loading, and rendering or encoding performance.
- OBS reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects: investigate upload stability, bitrate, and the ingest server.
- The picture changes as expected and the connection stays up: this is a normal transition; there is no need to restart the stream.
Prepare OBS so scene changes do not stop the stream
- Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube broadcast and start streaming once. Keep that output active while changing scenes. OBS has separate controls and hotkeys for switching to a specific scene and for starting or stopping a stream. Do not assign a scene transition to a stop/start hotkey. See the OBS Studio overview.
- Build the scene states you expect to use. Add and arrange likely sources in advance. Preview each transition and check that the intended source is visible. A fallback scene with a stable camera, slate, or holding graphic can help if an input fails; it is an operational safeguard, not a guarantee from OBS.
- Check media-source reload behavior. In the Media Source properties, review Close file when inactive. OBS says enabling it unloads a hidden file to free memory, but the source may take a short time to appear again when shown. Disable it if the source must return immediately, or leave it enabled only after testing the reload delay. See OBS Media Sources.
- Rehearse at the actual output settings. Use an unlisted or private YouTube broadcast and the intended 3840×2160 output, 60 fps, encoder, bitrate, and scene transitions. Watch OBS’s rendering-lag, encoding-lag, and dropped-frame indicators along with YouTube’s incoming-stream status. A local recording, if your computer can manage it, gives you a copy if the platform connection is interrupted.
- Watch performance during transitions. If rendering or encoding lag rises, simplify overlays, browser sources, animations, and high-resolution capture inputs. Sources can use resources even when they are not visible. Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain 4K60. OBS notes that 60 fps and complex sources can be demanding; consult its encoding performance troubleshooting.
Use YouTube’s published 4K60 encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are codec-specific. For 2160p at 60 fps, the published figures below are recommendations and bounds—not a promise of a particular visual result or a substitute for testing your encoder, capture inputs, and sustained upload.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. |
| Video codecs | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 are listed as supported. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| 2160p60 bitrate | H.264: 35 Mbps recommended. AV1 or H.265: 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum. |
| Color and HDR | Rec. 709 is recommended for SDR. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265; its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
Use the codec your encoder and hardware can sustain at 2160p60, rather than selecting a bitrate based on another codec’s recommendation. Leave headroom for upload variation and confirm the actual incoming-stream status in YouTube Studio; a plan’s advertised upload speed does not establish what your connection can sustain under load. YouTube’s current settings are on its live encoder settings page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the keyframe interval consistent as well as within YouTube’s recommendation. OBS explains that YouTube transcodes streams and that consistent keyframes help viewers move among available quality options: OBS on transcoding.
Diagnose a blank picture, lag, or disconnect
| What you see | Likely category | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube remains live, but the image is black or delayed after switching back. | Source visibility, initialization, or media reload. | Check that the source is visible in the scene, preview that scene, and review Close file when inactive for media sources. |
| Rendering or encoding lag rises near a transition. | GPU, compositing, or encoder capacity. | Simplify the scene and expensive sources; reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Follow OBS’s performance troubleshooting. |
| OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or the stream disconnects. | Network path, bitrate, or ingest server. | Check sustained upload, lower bitrate to a level the connection can maintain, and try another ingest server. |
| The stream stays connected and the image changes as expected. | Normal scene transition. | Continue monitoring; a routine scene switch does not call for a stream restart. |
OBS distinguishes dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag. Its connection troubleshooting guide says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate; it recommends testing another server and lowering bitrate. The guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, but stable capacity under real network load matters more than the nominal speed. A dropped-frame count is therefore not, by itself, evidence that a source switch caused the problem.

Choose capture inputs and encoding around the actual bottleneck
If the changing source is an external camera or console, OBS can use a capture card as a video-capture source. That card supplies an input; it does not keep YouTube connected or fix encoder or network instability. Before buying one, verify the manufacturer’s current specifications for the input resolution and frame rate you need, host interface, driver compatibility, and latency. OBS’s sources guide identifies capture cards as a source category but does not certify a particular model for 4K60.
For an encoding problem, compare the codecs YouTube supports with hardware support on your computer and the encoder’s ability to sustain 2160p60. For an ingest problem, focus on bitrate and connection stability. Changing a capture card or adding another PC alone cannot be assumed to prevent a YouTube connection drop.
