Then check for duplicate playlist entries. These playback changes prevent unwanted repetition; they do not grant permission to stream the material. If you do not have the necessary rights, remove the segment and do not broadcast it.
Find the source that is playing the segment
In OBS, open the scene containing the clip and select the source responsible for its playback. OBS uses Media Sources for media files; a VLC Video Source can play a playlist when VLC is installed. The source type determines which repeat control to check. See the OBS Sources Guide.
Stop the playlist or file from looping
For an OBS VLC Video Source playlist
- Select the VLC Video Source in the relevant scene and open its properties.
- Inspect the playlist entries and their order. Remove duplicate file paths or URLs if a clip appears more than once unintentionally.
- Turn off Loop Playlist if playback should stop after the last item rather than restart from the beginning. OBS documents this option as on by default.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off unless you intend randomized playback. Shuffle changes order; it does not remove duplicates. Its documented default is off.
For a single OBS Media Source
- Select the Media Source and open its properties.
- Turn off Loop if the file should stop when it finishes. OBS documents this control as off by default.
- Check whether the source restarts when it becomes active, such as after a scene switch or visibility change. OBS documents restart behavior for a source becoming active; confirm the effect in your scene before going live.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these controls. Labels or behavior may change between software versions, so verify the options in your installed version.
Test the sequence before broadcasting
- Preview the scene or make a short local recording that includes the end of the playlist and the point where the segment used to repeat.
- Confirm that the playlist stops, the next scene behaves as intended, and no duplicate entry plays the segment again.
- If the issue persists, check whether another source in the scene contains the same clip or whether a scene transition is making the source active again.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings before streaming. A short test can confirm playback behavior, but it cannot determine whether you have rights to broadcast the material.

Separate playback settings from copyright permission
A clip can be authorized yet still repeat because of a playlist setting; conversely, stopping the repeat does not make an unauthorized clip safe to stream. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party matches and may be interrupted or terminated if detected material remains. Its guidance also notes that licensed content can be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. - Confirm that your permission covers live streaming, and check any relevant territory or duration limits.
- Confirm separately whether the permission covers an archived stream or video on demand (VOD).
- For licensed material on YouTube, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist.
- If permission is unclear or does not cover the planned use, remove the material before going live.
Platform processes differ. Twitch says streamers are responsible for ensuring they have rights to livestream or store copyrighted material. Its VOD controls, including storage and rerun labeling, are management and disclosure tools, not proof of permission. See Twitch’s DMCA and Copyright FAQs and On-Demand Content on Twitch.

Why the same clip may play again
- Loop is enabled: A VLC playlist restarts after its final item when Loop Playlist is on; a single Media Source can replay when its Loop control is on.
- The clip is listed twice: Shuffle does not deduplicate a playlist. Check the entries themselves.
- The source becomes active again: Scene or visibility changes may restart a source, depending on its settings and behavior.
- A second source plays the same material: Inspect other media sources in the scene and any scenes that become active during the broadcast.
