To keep a church’s YouTube livestream running during a power cut, back up the entire essential chain—not just the router—with an inverter or UPS and compatible battery. Measure the equipment’s actual watt draw, decide how many hours of backup you need, and size the system for that load. The stream can still fail if the internet provider’s network also goes down; an inverter only keeps your local equipment powered.

Which equipment needs backup power?

Start by listing every device that must remain on for the stream to continue. Depending on your setup, that may include:

  • The streaming computer or hardware encoder.
  • The camera and essential audio/video equipment.
  • The router and ONT or modem.
  • A network switch or Wi-Fi access point, if the setup depends on one.

A UPS for the router alone can preserve local network equipment, but it will not keep a computer, encoder, or camera running. Back up the complete critical chain, or be clear about which part of the stream will stop if a device loses power. YouTube notes that network disruption can interrupt a live stream and recommends a reliable connection and upload headroom (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

How to size an inverter and battery

There is no reliable universal inverter size for a church livestream. The right system depends on the measured load, desired runtime, inverter efficiency, battery characteristics, and the equipment’s ability to tolerate a transfer between mains and backup power.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Measure the essential load. Record the watts used by the devices that must stay on. Include the encoder or computer and required production equipment as well as the network devices. Use a power meter or reliable equipment specifications; avoid adding devices that do not need to run during an outage.
  2. Set a backup duration. Decide how long the stream must continue without mains power. A target for a short interruption is different from a target that must cover a longer service.
  3. Check inverter output capacity. Confirm the unit can support the combined load in watts. VA alone is not the usable watt capacity: the power factor determines the relationship between VA and watts.
  4. Size the battery for the load and duration. Account for inverter losses, battery depth of discharge, age, temperature, and the battery’s discharge performance at the required runtime. Battery amp-hours alone do not establish how long the stream will run.
  5. Verify the proposed system against manufacturer data. Cross-check the battery configuration and expected runtime with the inverter and battery manuals or discharge data. Fuji Electric’s India UPS-sizing guide explains the effects of power factor, inverter efficiency, autonomy, depth of discharge, age, and temperature (Fuji Electric UPS battery and sizing guidance).

Ask a qualified local installer to assess the actual load and installation. Without the church’s equipment wattage, runtime target, wiring, and battery details, a model-level recommendation or runtime estimate would be guesswork.

Choose a backup arrangement

One inverter or UPS for the full essential setup

A single appropriately sized system can keep production and networking equipment running together. Check its usable watt capacity, power factor, battery compatibility, runtime at your measured load, transfer behavior, expandability, local service, warranty, and installed cost.

A dedicated UPS for the router and ONT

A smaller UPS or compatible DC mini UPS can preserve router and ONT power, but it does not back up the full livestream chain. Check each device’s voltage and power requirements, connector, polarity where relevant, and the UPS’s stated runtime against the device manual. APC’s India reseller guidance discusses router and modem backup as a separate use case (APC India: backup power for a modem or router).

UPS topology is another selection factor, not a shortcut to a universal recommendation. Schneider Electric India describes line-interactive and online double-conversion UPS operation; which is appropriate depends on the equipment and site requirements (Schneider Electric India: UPS topology guidance).

Check whether the internet will survive the outage

Keeping the router and ONT powered maintains your local equipment, not necessarily your internet service. Ask your ISP whether its network infrastructure serving the church remains available during a local power cut, and whether any local modem, ONT, or other required device also needs backup. A wired Ethernet connection between an encoder and router can reduce reliance on local Wi-Fi, where supported, but it cannot fix an upstream ISP interruption.

Install and test before a service

Installation and safety

Follow the selected inverter and battery manufacturers’ manuals. Have a qualified local electrician assess wiring, earthing, transfer arrangements, and ventilation. Exide’s India guidance recommends identifying essential loads such as computers and Wi-Fi routers before choosing a system, and advises placing equipment in a dry, well-ventilated location (Exide India: choosing an inverter).

Rehearse the power-cut scenario

  1. Start the stream as you normally would and confirm that the YouTube preview shows the expected picture and sound.
  2. With the relevant equipment on the backup system, disconnect mains power to that backed-up load in a controlled test.
  3. Check that the encoder, camera and essential AV gear, router, ONT, and any required network devices remain on.
  4. Watch the YouTube preview for interruption, missing audio, or video problems. Confirm that internet access remains available, not merely that the local router is powered.
  5. Restore mains power and check that the equipment returns to normal without an unexpected shutdown.

YouTube recommends thoroughly testing the setup and previewing the stream before starting (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Test before a service, and repeat after changes to the equipment, battery, wiring, or network.

Troubleshoot a stream that still stops

  • The router stays on, but the stream ends: The computer, encoder, or another essential device may not be backed up. Check the whole equipment chain and confirm the inverter can handle its combined watt load.
  • All local equipment stays on, but YouTube disconnects: The ISP or an upstream network device may have lost power or service. Ask the ISP about outage resilience; a local inverter cannot restore an unavailable connection.
  • The backup runs for less time than expected: Recheck the measured load, battery condition and compatibility, inverter losses, and the battery’s discharge data at that load. Do not infer runtime from VA or battery Ah alone.
  • The equipment restarts during changeover: Check the UPS or inverter’s transfer behavior and compatibility with the devices. Have the installer assess whether the selected system meets the continuity needs of the encoder and network equipment.
  • The stream is online but audio or video is missing: Inspect the affected camera, audio device, cables, and encoder after the transfer. Confirm them in the YouTube preview before relying on the setup during a service.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a local streaming computer running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at the church or at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. For church services using a camera live, this is not a replacement for a camera-based production setup. Learn more at StreamNeo.
