To keep a podcast stream running from an old Windows PC, first confirm that your streaming destination accepts the audio source you plan to use. If the PC itself sends the stream, OBS Studio can handle it: configure the destination and audio, test the stream, enable automatic reconnect, and prevent Windows from sleeping. These measures can recover from some interruptions, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted service if the PC, network, or destination fails.
First confirm where the audio stream comes from
The right setup depends on whether your audio is a live input, a playlist stored on the PC, or a stream hosted by another service. Use OBS only if the PC is the application sending audio to your destination. If a service already hosts and delivers the podcast stream, OBS may not be needed. Check the destination’s accepted sources and connection details before configuring software; the platform and audio workflow are not specified here.
Check whether the old PC is suitable
OBS Studio’s listed baseline requirements include Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. Meeting those requirements does not establish that a particular PC can sustain streaming: CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS puts it plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements.
Before setup, note the Windows version, CPU, memory, graphics capability, and available upload connection. Use a stable network connection with enough upload capacity for the output you choose. There is no single bitrate or output setting that can be prescribed without knowing the destination, connection, and PC workload.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Set up OBS and test the audio
- Install OBS Studio from its official site and open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard’s recommendations as a starting point; OBS says the wizard takes hardware and network conditions into account.
- Configure the destination: open Settings → Stream, choose the matching service, or enter custom server details and a stream key if the destination requires them. Use the stream key issued by that destination.
- Choose conservative output settings: in Settings → Output, set an audio bitrate appropriate for the destination and the connection. OBS’s overview describes around 160 kbps as a typical audio streaming setting, while noting that lower rates may suit a limited upload connection. Follow the destination’s requirements if they differ. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS overview guide.
- Verify the audio source: play the intended audio and watch the Audio Mixer meters. If they do not move, check the selected devices in Settings → Audio.
- Run a supervised test: make a short test stream or recording, then listen at the destination. Confirm that audio is present, audible, and not being cut off before relying on the setup.
Configure reconnects and restart behavior
In OBS’s Advanced settings, configure automatic reconnect so OBS can try to reconnect after some connection interruptions. If you want OBS to begin streaming when it launches, OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For a scheduled or otherwise automated launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. See OBS’s overview guide and launch parameters.
Test reconnect and restart behavior while you can supervise it. These settings do not restart a PC after every kind of failure or resolve a lost internet connection, power failure, OBS crash, or problem at the receiving service. Keep the PC on reliable power and network access, and configure Windows so it does not sleep during the intended broadcast. Windows power menus vary by version, so check the settings on the installed system.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or drops frames
- OBS audio meters are still: confirm that the intended source is playing and inspect the selected devices in Settings → Audio.
- OBS cannot connect or reconnect: verify the destination, server details, and stream key. Check that the destination is available and the PC still has internet access.
- Dropped frames: OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as common causes. Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, and try another ingest server if the service offers one.
- Connection trouble continues: check VPN or security software, router and modem, network adapter, and cables. OBS lists faulty network hardware, including cables, among possible causes; replace a cable only if inspection or testing points to it, rather than treating a new cable as a universal fix. Consult OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Stream does not resume after a reboot: verify that the automated launch actually opens OBS, that its working directory is correct if using a scheduled launch, and that the stream starts successfully. Repeat a supervised restart test.
Account for Windows 10’s support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Home and Pro on October 14, 2025. The operating system still functions, but those editions no longer receive regular security updates. For an internet-connected PC that will be left running, check Microsoft’s current guidance on upgrade eligibility or applicable extended updates before deciding to keep using it. See Windows 10 Home and Pro lifecycle information and Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support guidance.
